I think it’s mostly just Coachella alumni who need headliner-size font. The fact it’s been two EDM artists so far has mostly been a coincidence IMO.
LCD seems like a better fit for it than Odesza
As much as I'd love it, I don't think LCD is a big enough draw for that spot. LCD on the Coachella Stage after the headliner would probably be poorly attended.
Attended my first Coachella this year, and despite W1 ending on a sour note, I'm already looking forward to 2024.
Dua Lipa Cardi B - Vampire Weekend - Justice
SZA Robyn - Lil Nas X - Glass Animals
Rage Against the Machine Olivia Rodrigo - Rüfüs Du Sol - The Smile
Returning to the Desert: The Strokes
what I am referring to with an underattended Rage set is the concept that both Olivia and Rufus would have crowds that vastly surpass Rage.
I can get behind that. Olivia Rodrigo and definitely Rufus would draw a bigger crowd, but I still think if you give RATM that ~9 PM BLACKPINK slot, they'll have a decent enough crowd!

Hey remember how 2023 was full of wildly popular international acts that didn't only perform in English? Let's ditch that and go back to mostly old white guys!
I love LCD, but would they even subheadline at this point?
With back-to-back years where I'm looking pretty dumb for not waiting for the market to tank to half price on their performance on the Rose Bowl golf course, their best case scenario is the Arcade Fire slot.
Bruno Mars is in the studio recording his next album. Feels like the time to book him is now.
This would be incredible! I will not hear any slander on Bruno Mar's name. Go watch his 2014 Superbowl Halftime show if you don't believe me. And the opportunity for Silk Sonic on the Main Stage is just too good!

To be fair, this year they landed the biggest Latin and K-pop headliner possible. They also got arguably the biggest Afropop and Punjabi artist too. While the second line will have international acts, I don’t see how you repeat those booking with the same level of star power.

Other than a random ask for Oasis or LCD here or there, I'm not seeing much requests for a bunch of white guys?
Also, part of what made this year special is there's essentially one Bad Bunny, Rosalia, Blackpink, and Bjork and they got them all
I think if they can bag the BIGBANG return now thatll be huge. That one member will have gone to Space in the next few months already.
This is still a weird one since they’re way more popular in South Korea than they are in America. (Not saying it won’t happen but I have no idea how it’d play especially as other kpop artists make inroads at other festivals.)
been thinking about it more and i really think that arctic monkeys could headline full stop (not just as a "return to the desert", although that could be an option also)

Just saw their headlining show at LIB last year. It’s fantastic don’t get me wrong but the last two albums of there’s have barely charted and have completely moved away from the AM sound. They seem more likely to be a late add or see Alex Turner solo appearance then headliner

you're right that they've more or less just started doing what they want to do in the studio at the expense of commercial success, but i saw their setlist last night for the kick off of their europe tour and they pretty much just played the hits (even including flourescent adoulescent). they even played like 5 songs off of AM

There's no reason a Returning to the Desert act has to close the main stage. Give it to LCD for the sake of James' ego and let them have 80-90 minutes closing Mojave.
spotify numbers obviously aren't everything, but i'd be hardpressed to find another post 90s rock band that has these numbers and popularity in 2023.
also, they have 43 million monthly listeners compared to frank's 26 million and blackpink's 23 million.
I’d guess their fan base leans heavily European and that’s where those streams are coming from. Their most recent album has sold like 4x as much in the UK as US despite the population being like 5x smaller.
Their new songs still chart well in the UK as well.
I thought AM selling out 3 nights at the Forum (plus the rest of the North American tour) put to bed whether they could headline Coachella or not. The Saturday show (only one I checked) get in price for the Forum is $225 before fees on Stubhub
The question is if PT wants them to, especially on the back-end leg of their second straight lounge act album. But it would probably drive some people in from Europe / UK to the desert.

Sad to say their headlining set at Life is Beautiful last September was incredibly boring. Even coming from a pretty big AM fan like myself, I got immensely bored with their presentation and setlist, and their crowd thinned out CONSIDERABLY about 4 songs in. That's not to say they couldn't fill the "RTTD" slot, but I don't think they would pull particularly well if they came back and played the Coachella Main Stage.
