New Bad Bunny album hmm.. I'm gonna say it. Coachella has been having the tendency of booking headliners (really artists in general) *before* new albums come out 😒 what's up with that They book artists on the back end of album cycles instead of the front end of new album cycles like before. I guess in one sense it can be a good thing? A way to cap off and champion a successful album cycle, because who knows if the new one will be as good of a run? But still 😒 but still Imagine if they waited a year on Bad Bunny, or if Harry's House was released before Coachella instead of after? Would've been so much better imo
I don’t disagree it would have been better but it’s what artists want. A lot of major artists prefer to do their own tours and then do festivals on the victory lap. I don’t totally understand the logic but it’s definitely a thing.
And artists that are willing to play fests at the beginning of an album cycle see Coachella as a marketing opportunity to build hype. That may not be good for Coachella attendees but it’s good for the artists and it’s good for all the GV promoted shows that artist plays the rest of the cycle.

I think it’s smart. No guarantee new albums are going to be good, I’ve had it happen to me several times where I buy a ticket to see an artist prior to them dropping the album, and the album stinks and the show is very underwhelming

To add on, most of the crowd are casual fans so it makes sense for the artist not to play new material at a fest rather then there own show.
Also, they are more likely to move solo show tickets after a new album, so the end of the album cycle festival run is moreso getting those final $$$ from that album cycle

Brittany Howard solo is so underwhelming, especially when you know it’s at the cost of Alabama Shakes playing shows
I know The Black Keys headlined before, but I don't remember them being *that* popular 🤔 granted, this would've been my high school years, they were known and liked but they weren't as huge as bands like Paramore, MCR at the time

I disagree about the Paramore/MCR comparisons but beyond that these were also the years when it was not expected that the Coachella headliners would be the 3 biggest acts on earth.
Ok I checked and El Camino charted higher than Danger Days and equally with Brand New Eyes. They squandered their goodwill spectacularly but in 2012 people really liked The Black Keys!

As far as I can remember they were beloved until we got Gold On The Ceiling to death.

Guys guys if we are again opening the "Jesus they really headlined Coachella" topic, I would again point to the fact that Phoenix headlined it. I remember it clearly, they were kinda hot but still when they were announced it felt pretty weird.
Now, some 10 years later, they are opening for Beck and I bought a ticket for 7$ before fees on Stubhub, morning of the show.

In retrospect, I think the Black Keys capitalized on an open spot for "straight up no frills rock band" right around that time with Brothers and El Camino in 2010-11. And then Jack White released his first solo album in 2012 and there was a market correction.

El Camino sold more than anything MCR or Paramore put out. They’ve fallen off hard, but at their peak The Black Keys we’re very popular.
Maybe it was just my age group at the time 🤔 but Pmore and MCR were totally unavoidable, and very embedded into a whole culture. I didn't really know who The Black Keys were until El Camino and that was mainly because of Tighten Up. But yeah it does make sense considering they still don't really book any pop punk/emo era bands Not a knock on The Black Keys btw, I think their stuff is quality

I don't entirely agree with this (I remember they were still playing arenas on the Turn Blue tour and I think what hurt them more was that that album was a bunch of sadsack psychedelia after two huge albums of bright uptempo songs) but I looked into this too and Blunderbuss did better business than any album I mentioned before, which honestly surprised me. Kind of funny that all that blues rock stuff, the stomp clap hey bands, and the Bon Ivers of the world all took off around the same time and now ten years later the closest thing we have in the zeitgeist to that now is Mitski and the Phoebe Bridgers Industrial Complex.
I am past the hour mark of trying to get an individual layer of the fucking balloon chain from this year's poster in photoshop on the off chance some Billboard intern thinks the poster I put out on January 5, 2024 is real. I do it for the fans....

Then came rumors Daft Punk was going to join them, which got them a big crowd -- for W1.

So Coldplay has had both Robyn and Fiona Apple as opening acts in the past. Also seem to be friendly and close with Kylie Minogue who joined them for a performance as recently as last year. Dream scenario that they can bring them along if they are in consideration.

Fiona Apple was not happy on that tour, like at all.
