Just fyi, the ATL Unwound show was 90 minutes on the dot last night. No spoilers but I was told it’s heavy on Repetition and 1 of my 2 favorite songs were played.
So jam that on the way to Knoxville.
They posted the setlist on their Facebook stories. Take that as a source of info or something to avoid depending on if you want to know such things.
edit: the non-spoiler is that they include tuning breaks on their setlist which I always find funny for some reason.

Last night was one of the best days I've ever had at this festival. Unwound was spectacular beyond words, Charles Lloyd was riveting and I'm really glad I stuck it out to let his full set unfold, Kurt Vile went harder and heavier than I expected, and Tord Gustavsen dropped some heavy sorcery on the Bijou.
Any reports from Andre? Excited for the Bijou tonight. Headed downtown early to drop a buddy at Tuba Thieves then I'll be tooling around through to the end of Carl.
It’s feeling like more stuff is hitting capacity but I’m sure it’s due to the RFID. I haven’t seen anything on Jig + Reel but they hit it every show and the only one I went to that didn’t scan you in.
So keep doing that, BE. Much appreciated to see if I need to go that venue or stay where I’m at.

Day one report. I'll post day two later. Went hard last night. Very hard.

Generation of Vipers into Spike Hellis at the Pilot Light was so much goddamn fun. Probably my fave two sets of the weekend which is funny bc they're not in Big Ears.
Friday was Sam Amidon and Friends with Beth Orton, Ribot, Tamika Reid, Marc Anthony Jr and a few others. It was a bunch of covers and tons of fun. Last night was Yasmin Williams + Eli Winter for the VIP party. I was going but had a by chance meeting of Heike Liss and Fred Frith and we just talked about moving to Barcelona.
I feel like there’s at least one or two more today.

God that Amidon set sounds great. What do you recall was on the set list?

We were talking about it yesterday and I remember a Roger Miller tune and some traditional Irish folk tunes but I’m blanking on who they were by. I’ll ask around again today and see if someone has a better memory than I do.

Back at the hotel and packed and ready for the 5 AM drive home. I’ll give a full review after I get back but it was a wonderful weekend. The shows were mostly great. The Andre show was so fucking special and I totally teared up. He also said to expect the rest of the New Blue Sun recordings at some point. For as much shit as I talked, it was worth every penny. So thank you, sang_xcx.
The Thurston/JPJ show left a pretty bad taste in my mouth leaving but smiling faces and friends made it worth wild.
Travel safely home, friends. Let’s do this again next year.
Great weekend. Thanks to Andrew for letting me stay at the hotel and driving me to the fest and hanging out. Chris for popping up and seeing a bunch of shows with me. It was also nice meeting a few of you that I had never met before. I may be back next year. I really enjoyed this weekend.

All of these great posts... OK... ok... I'll go. Found a guy on Craigslist who is willing to sell me a Sonic Explorer pass for only $500 (since I'm sure I missed a few acts). See y'all soon!!

Curious what happened here? That would have been one of the sets I would have been most excited for!
It started half an hour to forty five minutes late at least. The app notifications were great this year. RFID helped a ton with capacity notices going out throughout the weekend. That being said, they completely dropped the ball for this show. It was supposed to start at 545. They sent a notice out at 601 that doors were going to open fifteen minutes late at 600. None of the staff had any answers to questions as to when it was going to start. The line was massive both for GA and VIP/Premier with the line starting to wrap the corner for GA an hour before the show. The cherry on top was I believe garageland said he saw JPJ and Thurston dicking around in the venue doing nothing to prep after the show was already supposed to have started, so it's not like they were running late or anything.

Oh it was great. I should have specified they were awesome as a duo. It was the initial standing in line for an hour that threw me. I could have made it to another show and came back.
Both lines wrapped the block while they were just hanging out. Once it started though, it was incredible.

A Steve Keene painting is unfortunately not the only thing we brought back from Knoxville with us: my brother tested positive for COVID this afternoon lol. Guess it's a good thing we weren't able to meet up with people much after all!
Anyway, another incredible year as others have mentioned. Very rough stab at top sets below:
1. Andre 3000 2. Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway 3. Adrianne Lenker 4. Hatis Noit 5. Medeski Russo Ribot 6. Brandon Coleman 7. Jason Moran & the Harlem Hellfighters 8. Unwound 9. Christian McBride with Rhiannon Giddens & Francesco Turrisi 10. Laurie Anderson HM: Charles Lloyd, Davone Tines, Void Patrol, Aja Monet, Molly Lewis, Min Xiao-Fen, Herbie Hancock
Literally don't think there's another festival on Earth where you'd be able to see that particular mix of genres and artists tbh
