I’m still sitting on the fence. I love the lineup but there isn’t a single must see thing for me. For the price jump and the increase in hotel prices I’m kind of kicking myself for not going out to the Numero Group shows out in L.A. unwound is definitely the #1 attraction for me and I feel like they’re going to be sticking around for awhile.

I think they are too. I'm betting there's also a few dates like DC and Atlanta and maybe Nashville around the Big Ears date, too.
To make matters a bit hard though, I saw Unwound 5 times this year and each show was simply incredible. I literally was crying in Barcelona while watching. I would absolutely pay $350 to take that ride again.
This definitely feels different but I also think for that kinda money, they're adding names people may know vs the usual fare of having to dig through names.
I also always underestimate how many people love Herbie.
Oh, I'll probably be a fucking wreck at Big Ears too.
I’m probably gonna do it. I did Sonic Explorer last year because I’m a giant Zorn nerd and wanted to be able to see as much as I could without risking missing anything. Wasn’t really necessary with the shift to Tennessee Theater. Went solo in 2022 and went with my son this year. To do SE for both of us again is basically $2k plus a room. So not the instabuy it’s been the last two years. I’m also put off by the separate ticket deal. When they first mentioned it I took to mean you would have to reserve your seat - didn’t really imagine they would paywall events. But I’m quibbling. I enjoyed Hopscotch but it was also a constant reminder of why Big Ears is the best fest I’ve been too.

Dammit man. Why did we not run into one another at Hopscotch.

I need to be a little more proactive and say hello. Seems like a nice group in here. I wonder if it was someone in this thread wearing the Cakekitchen / Graeme Jefferies t-shirt. I think that won my unofficial hippest t-shirt at Hopscotch contest I was running.

I really on post in a few threads here these days but that's time constraints vs the people. This board is full of awesomeness (esp this and the Hopscotch ones).

Alright, bit the bullet. I'm in. Friend from NC coming back out and my Minneapolis friends who joined me two years ago are coming down too. Hoping to rope in a couple of other Cincy people. Gut instinct top five: Laurie Anderson, Unwound, Colin Stetson, Brad Mehldau, Threadgill. I will try not to bitch out on brunch this year.

When I was having my "should I stay or should I go" crisis, I was telling my wife that it especially hurt to miss the La Monte Young and Ryuichi Sakamoto pieces. Right on cue, a friend messaged me saying, "Did you see you have to buy a separate ticket for the Young & Sakamoto events?!" It still hurts to not go this year, but as I mentioned earlier... that made it hurt a little less.
Do we have any idea how much extra the separately ticketed events are?
No clue... they're going to be released later:
"Due to the unique and intimate nature of this event, this program will require a separate, add-on ticket to ensure the artistic integrity of the experience. Tickets for this event will be released along with the festival schedule and will be available only to passholders."

Saw Laurie in Madrid this past summer and she still delivers.
If Stetson is on your short list, you should add Void Patrol (if you didn't know them) to that, too. It's Colin with Elliot Sharpe, Billy Martin, and Payton MacDonald. The last album slayed and I'm super excited for that.

Yes, way up on my list--I'm a massive Stetson fanboy. Also, this means that all three members of Medeski Martin and Wood will be on site...
Hate to say it but I'm 95% certain I'll be passing on Big Ears for 2024. My Dad has other travel plans that weekend, and I really want to make Shaky Knees happen for the first time next year.

75% certain Dad and I will be back for 2025.
I realized after I purchased a ticket that I'll literally be driving back home to get on a plane for family vacation.
Totally understandable and you guys will be missed. Fingers crossed for 2025 then.
I doubt I am buying a ticket this year. Last year I exclusively went to free shows and I had a paid ticket lol. Still plan on attending, just don't feel the need for a wristband at this point.
Big Ears 2024: The Year We Killed Off The Old White Guys
This stings because it made me realize I’ll have just turned 50 at Big Ears ‘24. On the plus side, I usually feel relatively young at Big Ears shows. As opposed to watching The Sloppy Boys at Neptunes during Hopscotch. I was grandpa in that room.

Haha I kid. There seems to be a shift in demographics this year though. A lot of people I know are saying they're setting this year out. I can understand. Paying that much money for something you can't get behind would be silly.
People will be missed but that said, I don’t fear the end of the festival but I'm wondering exactly what this festival may look like in a few years.

I feel its reaching a bit farther than it needs to at the expense of the attendees. On paper it always looks amazing for the city. It's just impractical to think you can do much other than see a few shows and spend a lot of time in line/travelling or camp out somewhere for half the day or longer and see a bunch of stuff at the expense of what you missed.
That said, every year I have a great time, but I wind up getting sick of the logistics by day 2... and I live here so its already easy.

Just giving you shit. The free show line-up was insane last year and there's nothing to say it won't be this time either.

Either way, pen me in for hangs.
oh absolutely! and not directing that at anyone in particular, it just kinda bums me out. I miss it being a little smaller I suppose.
Thank you! It's not a big thread but consistency is key.
I'm allllllll about being inclusive here, but the yearly first Big Ears post should be made by someone who is going to live up to the extensive responsibilities!! I kid... kinda.

There used to be rules on starting a festival thread but it got lax over the years. Its not a huge deal to me personally but I hate digging 5 pages to find a lineup.
