Sheer mag looks likely with tour dates. Haven't listened to them but if they suck they're in
They're opening for Baroness at the Royale in a couple of weeks, so it may be unlikely they're at BC.
Definitely doesn't count them out. Opening acts have played within a month of the fest (Denzel Curry in 2019 opened for Billie Eilish at the pavilion less than a month later)
Yep - and most likely Allison Russell too. So, sub to Tyler Childers, or headliner
Headliner, definitely. He's bigger than Tyler Childers in Boston, at least judging from how many sold out dates each had at the pavilion this summer.
Even though he's one of my favorite currently recording and touring artists, there's a big downside here. If Hozier and Tyler Childers are two of the three top line artists, it pretty much guarantees that the third artist is going to be a female-fronted act. Not a thing wrong with that in general terms, but it means that The Cure, The Strokes, or a lot of bands that we've individually and collectively been hoping for are out of the running.

Think we can put Sierra Ferrell as a very strong possibility. No Boston date and playing DC on the 22nd before going on tour with Zach Bryan in June. Unless she's playing Newport.
I keep updating this list from page 9. Is there a way to add it to page 1, even though the thread starter (Zack) isn't on the board anymore?

They're allowed in. They're just not allowed to leave, once in.

Newport's a non-issue. In recent years, a few artists have played Boston or Providence literally within a couple of days of their NFF show. It's only a factor if the artist or their booker thinks, "Yep, we've got New England covered, no need for any other dates in the region."
When that festival sells out in minutes without a single name being announced, neither NFF nor a Boston appearance are going to lose any business if both happen.
2nd line: Sheryl Crow * Miley Cyrus * Phoebe Bridgers
Blue Closers: My Morning Jacket * ????? * ?????
(This presumes that they want to stay roughly in the same lane as Newport Folk, Beach Road Weekend, etc., although that's just supposition based upon Childers and Hozier seeming like top line locks. If they're going broader than that, I'd slot in the likes of Lil Yachty and Jimmy Eat World as potential Blue closers. Really, who knows?)

Maybe i dont really have my finger on the pulse like i used to, but this would be the weakest top 3 since moving to Harvard, right? Weakest meaning "artists that would play to the smallest number of people on their headline dates here"... like 2 out of 3 don't even play TD Garden when they're in town.

That top 3, even top 6, doesn't move tickets and you're right, it would be the weakest top 3 since the move. Hozier most likely closes red. I don't care that he's "big" in Boston.
If Phoebe Bridgers is here, it's with boygenius. They're still riding a high and got more national exposure being the musical guest on SNL this weekend.
I'm not sure why tw12 thinks that BC would "stay" in the same lane as those other festivals. They had one, albeit very successful, folk/Americana day last year. They won't make a weekend of it. Outside of the 2020/2022 hard alt rock direction that they attempted, every year's headliners have spanned multiple genres.

Well, Hozier is an arena headliner in Boston the next time he does a headlining tour, given 15K tickets sold out in minutes for the two Boston and one NH shows.
Are we wrong to be assuming that Childers is a headliner? He doesn't seem that big, although he is headlining two nights at MSG. Two nights at an NBA arena in the northeast does sound like a Boston Calling headliner.
My mock is based entirely upon the assumption that Hozier and Childers are top line and they're not necessarily going to go with metal or rap for the third headliner if those are two of the three.
As much as I'd prefer a mostly Americana fest to a mostly any other genre festival, I don't think that it's necessarily the best direction for Boston Calling, simply due to the competition from other New England festivals in the same lane. I don't drive, but a lot of people do, and among people who like this lane, some may opt for Newport or Beach Road. They'll either jump on Newport tickets immediately because of what the festival has delivered in the past or they'll hang back and see how Boston Calling and Beach Road compare and then choose between them. Not everybody has the money or inclination to do multiple festivals in one summer.
But how ridiculous would a poster with Hozier - Tyler Childers - Guns N Roses (or any other hard rock or metal band) look? I'd much rather see The Cure or The Killers in the third spot than Lana Del Rey, but if we're assuming that it has to be a female artist and one who won't look out of place next to those other two top line names, it almost has to be Lana or Stevie, because who else isn't going to look ridiculous next to those other two names? Maybe you go Billie Eilish and because Sylvan Esso is opening both Childers dates in NYC, you could pepper in a little pop along with Eilish and Esso.
The 2023 top line worked on a poster, because it was three very different acts. But if you're booking two who fall under a broad folk/roots/Americana umbrella, a very different third name is going to look off.

I'm thinking that they may stay in that lane based upon the fact that Childers and Hozier are going to be top line if they're doing the festival and they both almost certainly are playing Boston Calling, given their tour routing.
I'm betting the the only boygenius performance next year is at the Grammy awards show. They basically devoted this year to the side project and it's likely that all three may want to release their next individual albums and tour behind them in 2024. All of them are going to be individually bigger now than they were before this year.

I think Childers and Hozier are the same day - flip a coin as to who closes red and who closes green.
You may be right about boygenius. All three have been on a BC lineup, but Phoebe's year was 2020, which didn't happen, so maybe she's here in 2024. She hasn't had a full album release since 2020 and she's the biggest of the 3 pre-boygenius.
And you bring up a good point on the pop side of the house - pop acts had a bigger presence in 2023 than in previous iterations, so maybe that still holds, at least on the undercard.
Still holding out hope for either The Cure or one of the Albarn bands, but given that Gorillaz is bigger in the US than Blur and Blur is currently touring their latest release, that won't happen.

I just can't see booking a #2 who sold out 10K tickets in Boston in minutes or one that's doing two nights at MSG within a couple of days of Boston Calling. Yet, there's nothing more certain than the likelihood that both are in the lineup based upon their tour routing.
I was on the fence about Tyler Childers headlining, but didn't realize he's just about sold out 2 nights at MSG. Given that, if he is on the lineup, I think he has to be headlining.
I still think Hozier is second-billed on his day, probably closing Red the same day Childers headlines. I truly do not believe he could sell out TD Garden, at least not without a legit opener. Even if i'm wrong and he could... Niall Horan and Noah Kahan were lower-billed on their days and have gone on to either play or at least announce Xfinity Center shows in the months since. You could argue both have gotten a lot more popular than they were a year ago or whenever they would've been booked for BC23. But Alanis Morissette recently announced an Xfinity Center show and was second-billed on her day, and i don't think her popularity has changed much in the last 12mo (or realistically like 12 years.)

Well, I see your point, but Noah Kahan was a well-timed booking. He hadn't yet blown up the way he would months later when he was likely booked in the fall of 2022 for the following year's edition. According to Setlist.fm, he played MGM that October.
That's the best kind of booking for a festival. Get someone whom you suspect is about to go big, before they actually go big, and you've paid relatively little for someone who may attract as many people as that day's headliner.
It seemed like half of the crowd walked out after Hozier's 2015 set at Boston Calling and didn't stay for Alabama Shakes. He's always been big here, in large part because of Boston's huge community of Irish expats. I don't know if he'd sell out Fenway, for even one show, but TD Garden is probably a piece of cake for him.
You hit upon the difference between Alanis and Hozier. She's a legacy act whom people want to see because of what she did years ago. She sells tickets based upon her 90's work (and is touring with a strong #2 next summer, Joan Jett). Her popularity is what it is, both very stable and very stagnant. Hozier is in the prime of his career and has been moving up, both in venue size and festival poster line, steadily.
As for Hozier vs. Childers, each sold out the pavilion this summer, but Hozier did it for two shows, compared to Childers' one.

So, it seems like the prodigal son is returning to the music world. I hope that Boston Calling is broad enough to include progressive hip hop in its lineup next year, because whether as the third headliner, or a Blue stage closer, this would be an amazing booking and somewhat-but-not-quite make up for seemingly being the only festival to not book the 2014 reunion tour.

Given that this release contains no rap verses or any lyrics at all, I'm good with not having Andre 3000 at BC next year.
If you want progressive hip-hop, give me Busdriver, Aesop Rock, Oddisee, Shabazz Palaces or Open Mike Eagle.
it would potentially be a very cool and unique booking, but really the only scenario i think i would choose to NOT see Andre 3000 is if it's a set of him playing experimental flute music... so no, thanks.
"The new album is inspired by Laraaji, Brian Eno, Alice Coltrane, Steve Reich, Pharoah Sanders, and an ayahuasca trip in which André turned into a panther (see track three)."
I love the sound of this. If he does do live dates for this album (which I don't think is likely) Newport Jazz would be perfect tbh

Re: the "Most Likely Out" section above, i don't think bands playing Boston in late 2023 should be included there. 2024 yeah, especially if we think the lineup comes out in January, but anyone playing here pre-lineup release could definitely be back in May.
