Not gonna lie, that would seem like an expensive 1/2 if they did, maybe the third name would be Hozier? Not huge wins in my book but not terrible, but oh man I could only imagine the genera internet sentiment would be rough

And not knowing this year's budget, it could be another case of low-cost undercard acts like the Friday of 2023. Yeah, the sentiment would not be good, I'd imagine. When you think of Boston Calling, no matter what ownership iteration or location, you don't think Ed Sheeran. I would have hoped that C3 Presents would help bolster the brand, similar to Shaky Knees instead of changing direction, again.
They may have picked a lane, it just may not be the one general followers of the fest want…
I can understand what's in it for the festival, but why would an artist who can fill an NFL stadium for two nights in a city want to play second tier festivals which cap out at under 50K attendees? What's in it for Ed Sheeran, as opposed to coming back and playing one or two shows at Gillette again?

i mean.. metallica did it
I'm thinking that BC was desperate to get a big name to replace Foo Fighters on relatively short notice and may have overpaid for Metallica and they said yes. I just don't see what's in it for Sheeran, considering his other option.

they were the Rage replacement, NIN was the Foos one

That's exactly what happened with regards to Metallica. The original lineup of Rage, Foos, and The Strokes were a continuation of the 2020 headliners, with The Strokes replacing RHCP, that focused on alternative rock headliners. With Rage and Foos dropping due to injury and Taylor Hawkins' death, the organizers had to fill those slots with similarly genre aligned large acts to appease ticket holders who bought passes to see either Foos or Rage. Cue Nine Inch Nails and Metallica. Can you imagine if Rage or Foos were replaced by Bieber and/or Billy Eilish?
I think that Bottlerock lineup kinda stinks, but the one thing they do that i really love (that Boston Calling has unfortunately never done) is booking artists who have fallen off over the years that would be a perfect "4pm drunk in the sun singalong" set, like Nelly and T-Pain. You could even throw Chevy Metal in that category... isnt that just the Foo Fighters (without Grohl) playing all covers?! Sounds amazing.
makes me think announcement of announcement today or tomorrow—lineup day after that—sale thurs?
Last year was announced on Tuesday, sale Thursday. Don't remember if Chase pre-sale is branding or perk and general sale later in the day (noon) or the next day.

I was wondering about that as I was writing the post, thanks.
On Ed Sheeran's website, it shows that his Bottlerock day is the 26th, so if we get him it will be the 24th. Better to get it out of the way first, I guess.

Then again- of course not many acts do it- but The Killers did Friday BC and Saturday Bottlerock so it's not out of the question he does Saturday, even if that would be strange.

That would assume either a pared down stage setup or multiple versions of it since the stage crews usually setup the headliner stage the night before/early morning before the "doors" open.
This festival’s social media presence never ceases to confuse me
the instagram comments are extremely funny.
"Will you have some hip hop this year?" - hopefully not - no its a rock fest - no festivals mostly have rock music
"All I want is [insert 8 acts that haven't been relevant in over a decade]" - omg if the Lumineers aren't back i will literally die - if they dont book pearl jam this festival is canceled

also its very funny that all these festivals decided to drop their lineups today and Coachella is once again going to release theirs this afternoon and just bury all of them in the news cycle yet again
