What's really missing from the lineup is anything legacy or even solidly 90's. Most festivals, regardless of genre, have a handful of artists who've been around that long, but I don't really see that here.
Like you said, he JUST played two nights at Gillette. The second date was a dud with tens of thousands of unsold tickets. It never should have been added. Resale prices plummeted so low. Anybody who wanted to see him, saw him, for dirt cheap if they waited until right before.
Saturday seems like the day most likely to sell poorly.
That Saturday lineup is bizarre. A lot of country/folk (Tyler Childers, The Red Clay Strays, Tanner Usrey, The Castellows, Motherfolk, Ward Hayden, Highwater Haulers), mixed with some psych-rock and jam band acts (Khruangbin & Trey Anastasio), but lets throw in some alt-pop with Jessie Murph and D4vd.

I didn't know that. In that case, waiting a year longer before booking him at Boston Calling may have been a better move.
Is the BC capacity is still around 40K? There could still be 20-30K who'd want to see him again that soon and would buy a one-day pass. Add that to the three day passes, and you've got a decent Friday crowd.

I'd have to imagine Friday sells out first because Sheeran is definitely the biggest name and Renee Rapp is getting really popular. And I agree that Saturday likely sells the worst, even if i probably like it the most (which honestly is best case scenario.)

TBH it just makes it looks sadder and more depressing when you realize Shaky Knees, BC, and 'Roo legit have the EXACT same website template. Live Nation is just so lazy they can't even at least make it look a bit more unique lol

You know what else is similar between these 3? Fans of all 3 think this year's lineups are the weakest that the respective festivals have had. Hopefully a symptom of a bad mid/large festival season and some of the smaller festivals have better luck - I'm looking at you In Between Days.

This is the worst lineup we've had since moving to the athletic complex for sure. Trey Anastasio is one of the laziest bookings. Guess BC will just become like another Levitate or whatever those fests are that I have no interest in. Knew it was a bad sign after saturday sold out last year. Fleshwater is the best band on the whole thing.

I think I figured out why this festival and Shaky Knees are booked the way that they are booked.
There's value to LiveNation in owning urban festivals in markets in which they own and operate multiple venues. Not only do they bring in festival revenue, but they can expose the mostly local fans attending that urban festival to newer, up-and-coming artists who will play their venues in that market in the months following the festival.
The top three or four artists each day are the ones who motivate people to buy passes, and the four or five local artists on the bottom two lines help them save money on the lineup and get some positive press and social buzz for helping to elevate local artists.
But the pop, rock, country, and rap artists in the middle of the lineup are there because they're LN artists who can make more money for LN in that market as their audience grows.
This strategy probably wouldn't work as well at a destination fest or a camping fest, but when you own BMH, Paradise, HoB, MGM, Orpheum, LB Pavilion, and Xfinity Center, you've got the opportunity to do what baseball teams do with minor league prospects -- move them through the system and hope that a handful make it to the big leagues.
This is why they don't book legacy artists or those who've been around for more than a hot minute in the middle of the poster. An 80's rapper or 90's indie rock band is a known quantity and will sell the same number of tickets to their next House of Blues or MGM show whether they play Boston Calling or not. LN is leaning into their ability to create new attractions for their venues at urban festivals, and booking big names who'll attract ticket buyers in the top couple of lines.

do the youths listen to hozier now too? idk, man. i'm 35. i thought his target audience was us old people.
He exploded on tik tok within the last year and it just drove his tours to sell out cause people realized this guy had been around for 10+ years releasing music that basics enjoy.
Who the hell is David Kushner and why is he third line on Fri with 25M monthly listeners/top song with 800+ M play on Spotify? I know it’s not a great metric for evaluating line up but that seems like a big variance

i was hoping it was the velvet revolver rhythm guitarist finally making it on his own but no dice

he seems like a shawn mendes type act, comventionally very attractive with zero substance that attacts a specific young audience
i’m just shocked at how bad this is. i knew not to expect much but this is by far their worst lineup ever. Flashwater is a really cool discovery as well as Chappell Roan but that whole top 3 on sunday is probably going to conflict. Seeing Megan and The Killers along with the two i mentioned would make GA worth it but theres no chance its be able to see both

Yes, this is absolutely atrocious. For Sunday, they may have The Revivalists close blue and do a Megan > Hozier > The Killers chain.

that would be great. heres hoping
Looking at last year's poster, the 4th artist listed each day ended up closing blue - Niall Horan, Flaming Lips, and King Gizz. So, if they keep that for 2024, then it would be Young the Giant, Frank Turner, and Revivalists closing blue.

Having Revivalists conflict with Hozier instead of Meg would be a choice… but with BC being the way they are I guess that wouldn’t surprise me

I know, that would make no sense, but you won't have Hozier close blue as the "2nd headliner" of the day and that area seems too small for Megan. Maybe I'm naive in thinking she's bigger than that, but maybe she's not big enough for BC patrons to be on green. With how they've made Friday more pop-centric and Saturday more country/folk-centric, there's going to be conflicts between similar artists.

I could actually see Lovejoy closing blue. They have a huge, dedicated fanbase
Early prediction:
Green The Thing > Chappell Roan > Megan Thee Stallion > The Killers
Red: Fleshwater > Christone Kingfish Ingram > The Heavy Heavy > The Revivalists > Hozier
Blue: Francis of Delirium > Royel Otis > Blondshell > Lovejoy
Orange: Tysk Tysk Tysk > Billy Dean Thomas > Zola Simone > Stefan Thev

I feel the opposite way about this lineup than I usually do about Boston Calling lineups. Normally, I have little interest in the headliners, but there are always a handful of acts in the middle of the lineup that I'm excited about.
This time, it's been reversed. My first thought, when I saw the top six in bold letters was "Wow, this is great." Then, there was a whole lot of "huh, what?" as I made my way through the descending lines. But, after checking half a song on YouTube here and there on the various Sunday middle of the lineup artists, I discovered that there's so much rock and roll there, and artists potentially worth checking out. Lovejoy through Fleshwater is all rock, except for Chappell Roan, and some of them might turn out to be good live performers.
I counted only five overlaps with Shaky Knees. I thought there'd be more.

This feels like a best case scenario. Which means we'll end up with Royal Otis playing Red around 530 or something equally stupid.
