That's been the general consensus over the last few months. It's an off touring cycle or artists are choosing to skip festivals. Other promoters have discussed the challenges of putting together lineups this year.
kneejerk reactions: friday: i dont listen to him but i think ed sheeran could be a sneaky good headliner, especially from a safe viewing distance way in the back. i like leon bridges, young the giant, and wolff sisters. dont really know anything about the others at all, unfortunately. saturday: i dont know much about tyler childers besides "country music" which is not for me, but supposedly more americana/folk-leaning (like zach bryan? who i actually really like) so maybe he's good..? Frank Turner being back is really great, he's one of my all-time favorite artists. Bad Rabbits absolutely rule. i casually like Trey, and i dont know anything about khruangbin but people love them, probably a good edible set... honestly a good edible day overall. sunday: surprised the killers are back, but they allegedly have new music soon maybe..? most of my friend group doesn't know hozier beyond like 2 songs but he's sneaky good. megan theeee stallion is a wild booking but idk sure cool why not get weird with it. i saw the heavy heavy randomly at newport folk and really liked them, so there's something interesting.
overall... this is just not very good, but it isn't atrocious. and i've gone every single year so i'm not going to stop now. i'll do some research/listening and see what gems i can find in there.

The Killers to me is the biggest shock, considering they are doing tiny shows this year for Hot Fuss and then take a hiatus as Brandon writes his solo album, so even as a big fan I'm slightlyyy upset this most likley means Boston doesn't get a Hot Fuss show
the mix of music for people over 30 (tyler, trey, killers, hozier) and then people under 20 (renee rapp, luke hemmings, jessie murph, megan thee stallion) is just so jarring
Initial thoughts...usually the artists I'm most excited about wind up being third and fourth lines on the poster, but I'm genuinely happy about five of the top six names. Nice bunch of local artists on the lower lines (although I have no idea why they continue to avoid booking Hallelujah The Hills and Future Teens, both of whom aren't just "good for a local band," but are flat out great.)
They definitely could use more straightforward rock and roll in the middle of the lineup, though. Add in a band like Guided By Voices, The Hold Steady, or Low Cut Connie, and the lineup is really as musically diverse as they think it is. (Speaking of which...if I'm a rap fan, I'm not happy about having to pay for a one-day pass just to see Megan Thee Stallion, and only Megan Thee Stallion. At least, they should have scheduled the local rappers on the Orange Stage for Sunday, to provide some run up for her fans. I generally think that it's a bad move for a festival to book just one artist in a particular genre, because it's not enough to move tickets to fans of that genre.)

Yeah there is a lot of names I’m not really familiar with, not sure if it’s just because I haven’t crossed them or if it’s really all small acts. Missing a bit of that cool/unexpected/interesting undercard acts but maybe I’ll be surprised when I start listening?
i know “major fest” isn’t really the best way to describe boston calling but i’ll use it anyways. never thought i’d see the red clay strays and tanner usrey on the second line of their day at a major fest.

For my tastes this is the first time I'm considering a 3 day pass but I do agree...it's certainly a change from the last few years, and an abrupt one at that. That said tbh I think this will move tickets, at least Friday for sure.
Definitely some acts I’d like to see, but may be more of a “if I don’t have much else going on, weather is good, can find a decent deal on secondary” type call for me this year
This lineup is just weird. There's a lot of stuff I don't recognize. Megan Thee Stallion would be fun, but seems out of place. There's like 3 things I'd see on Friday.
Undercard stuff I'd see: Madi Diaz Cannons Kingfish Ingram Heavy Heavy Bad Rabbits (?)
also its very funny that all these festivals decided to drop their lineups today and Coachella is once again going to release theirs this afternoon and just bury all of them in the news cycle yet again
The dirty little secret about trending topics on Twitter/X is that the algorithms deliver results to users based upon whom they follow, what they like & share, and what they post. Everybody winds up seeing trending topics related to their interests, but that's no guarantee that most people are seeing the same topics (although some of them genuinely are trending that broadly).
Sunday will sell well or maybe even sell out. Other days will be empty.
Really? Ed Sheeran headlined two nights at Gillette Stadium last summer. Forgot about how appealing the day's lineup is as a whole. You really don't think that tens of thousands of his fans will buy one-day passes to see him?

Like you said, he JUST played two nights at Gillette. The second date was a dud with tens of thousands of unsold tickets. It never should have been added. Resale prices plummeted so low. Anybody who wanted to see him, saw him, for dirt cheap if they waited until right before.

I didn't know that. In that case, waiting a year longer before booking him at Boston Calling may have been a better move.
Is the BC capacity is still around 40K? There could still be 20-30K who'd want to see him again that soon and would buy a one-day pass. Add that to the three day passes, and you've got a decent Friday crowd.
Saturday seems like the day most likely to sell poorly.
