Gf had a 7th gen classic for 15 years and for preventative measures I got her a 256 touch as an anniversary present not too long before they discontinued them. Gets used everyday.
Funny thing is the kids are getting into camcorders and all that stuff now and mp3 players are prob next.
I have never understood this. I direct people to the QR code and they snap at me for a menu (which is out of date bc we have the codes) and I’m immediately going to give this person minimal service. Especially when I have to take the time to be like “basically everything is a different price now and we don’t this or this” blah blah. And then that person turns around and is on their phone anyways lol. Even if you have a “no phone at dinner” policy you wanna abide by it takes up as much time as staring at paper for 5 minutes. Cutting back on paper menus is more efficient in so many ways. Less paper waste (and cost) bc they don’t need to be reprinted to reflect new specials nor do they have to constantly replaced when they get gross. We also don’t have to print a bunch of those little stand alone flyers for new drinks and stuff. Plus, on that end, less people complaining about sticky menus that have been making the rounds all day.
Anyways yeah it’s a tragically weird hill people want to die on.
I want to read it on something more than the 3 inch screen on my phone. Besides, I bring MY phone into the restaurant. I get these days everyone has a smart phone, but what if I didn't? Or didn't have it with me? Then I just don't get to see the menu? It fucking annoys me. It reminds me of the Bill Burr joke. Where he complains about going into the sandwich shop and having to do half the work. "Here's your sandwich the condiments are over there, you can finish putting it together yourself".
I hate QR codes at restaurants, too. If I wanted to look at the menu on my phone and have a half ass restaurant experience, I’d just order online and pick it up. But maybe that’s the point. Maybe servers want us to just do take out orders, give them 10% tips for bagging up the food and not have to wait on half the patrons.
But yeah, if I have to order from a QR code I’m immediately turned off by the restaurant. Bad first impression. So I guess it goes both ways.
I also hate restaurants that sneak in automatic service fees into the bills and don’t explain. Hell, even if they try to explain it. The pandemic is over, it’s not necessary anymore. First off, pay your employees more money and don’t try to sneak it from me. Secondly, I do not trust owners to actually give that money to wait staff. And third, it just makes me end up tipping less.
I saw an automatic service charge tacked on at a bunch of places in Atlanta, and kept asking if that was the tip or not. Because, why am I gonna double tip? Your restaurant wasn't even that great to begin with.

I don't mind QR codes, but it also assumes you have your phone on you at all times. What I don't like is that they never post their QR's outside the restaurant, bar, etc. Only a few places have let me KNOW that I'm going to have to get the phone out QR code, etc. and yes it's irritating sometimes. But cum's correct about less paper, cleaner facilities, etc. I just would feel better knowing before I walk into a restaurant if there is a menu or a QR.
With that said, the service fees do two things, and you are still right - They usually go to a tip pool for the servers or end up going to the managers/owners. Which is weird when we have a tipping country. I'm broke and I'll pay the extra 4 dollars if you ask me, but I hate getting triple taxed (because food/alcohol is now a state tax here - so 9 bucks turns into 12 in seconds)
I know we are yelling at the clouds but there is nuance.
edit: On QR codes, the only time I get miffed about it is when the waiter/ess starts getting pissed off that you even asked. Basically "don't you know stupid there's a QR here"... and I have to look at them with appreciation still. And yes I HATE having a phone on me all the time. I also have to be super attentive to it and it cost me way too much: I work in audio and have to constantly turn my phone to silent or loud as fuck because my range of hearing is weird + on a location shoot I can't have my phone ring. As we yell at the clouds because shit ain't changing.
-- Oh it's important to note that on these jobs, to both not damage my phone or be distracted, I leave my phone and wallet in my bag. luckily since you have to pay for shit I remember both and get it when we have a force walk a way lunch (ya not getting paid for your lunch is part of my business, /s it NEVER gets expensive in Manhattan).

There's been times I've walked in from the beach without my phone on my hip (left it in my bag on the beach or whatever) to eat real quick but didn't have my phone. Never had the place be QR-code only. So the issue isn't whether it's a problem or not, just that no restaurant has inconvenienced me yet... If everyone had QR code only, it'd be a problem. Your point isn't valid anyway. There are clearly people that don't have smart phones or times (like I mentioned) when people wouldn't have their phone with them.
I love QR codes. Because several of my Android phone using friends can't get them to work on their phone. And I get to laugh at them as I very self righteously hand them my phone.
It's the petty things in life that help me strive.

That actually does bring up another point. I do have an iphone, but I'd say half the times I've been forced with QR codes they didn't work or there was shitty service and it wouldn't load.

some people don’t speak English. Some people are blind. 99% of people that complain about having to use a QR code do have a smart phone that they can easily use to look at the menu so it’s rly not an issue.

doubt
Ok well I've identified like half a dozen problems/issues with QR codes already. I guess you're just going to have to disagree with me. Or in this case, not believe me.
Me to server- "Hey first time coming here, what do you recommend?" Server- "Go on the internet and find out for yourself bro use the QR code, that's our menu. You have to watch a brief 30 second ad first tho. Watch out for the pop up ad! Oh and make sure to click the correct location, we have several across the US. There's no service here, so you have to connect to our shitty wifi that also doesn't work"

I used to work at the restaurant/ bar cum does and I can say that’s it’s a massive help for the trivia nights where we are full of a bunch of college students. They all sit down at once and it automatically sends tickets to the kitchen and bar.
Plus it gives servers some protection. I guarantee you we would’ve had like 5 people skip on their checks every night if not for the QR code so if they leave, we can charge them and automatically get 20% 😈

I have never had an ad for an online menu nor has the server not recommended something using that as an excuse.

I was intentionally exaggerating, being the old man yelling at the cloud. The no service/shitty wifi has happened to me though.
Edit- And the multiple locations, IE the QR code directly you to the main website and then having to navigate to the correct menu. Not a big deal, but kind of annoying.

if you have a bad server it doesn't really matter what the menu is like.

My understanding is that my old restaurant signed a deal with this QR menu company during COVID as to limit contact but to make the restaurant run better on busier nights. But now they’re kinda locked into this deal where a certain amount of orders have to go through their system so it’s not like they can just up and abandon it.
I imagine they’re not the only one. Restaurants tried something new, didn’t work out in some cases, but they’re kinda fucked in terms of getting rid of it.
My dad is old and has a flip phone still. Even if he had a smartphone he's half blind and wouldn't want to try to read a menu off it. Went out to eat with him one time where the restaurant had a QR code menu and just asked for a regular one for him. They obligated so no issue. Personally I don't like them either, for many of the reasons already mentioned (like, I don't want to be on my fking phone all the time.) But as long as the place is accommodating it's fine, even if a little annoying.

Obviously you have to be accommodating in some circumstances. You have to be able to adapt quickly when serving to give people good service.
It’s the “annoyed I even had to ask” or just assuming that you as someone who has no reason not to use a QR code menu in a normal circumstance just shouldn’t have to that is nerve grating lol. People are so pompous and holier than thou to servers.
I’m cool with a QR code at a bar that serves food, but I’ll die on this hill that I do not ever want a QR code at a restaurant. With a 5 month old baby, we barely get out as it is. We want a restaurant experience. I look at menus on my phone at home all the time when ordering take out. Fuck that in person. I also want a cocktail list or it’s own menu. I want my water refilled like 4-5 times because I drink a lot of water. I want to be able to split the check if I need to split the check. None of this was asking too much back in the day.
I tip 20-25% every single time even if this service sucks, I just want a legit restaurant experience

Don't laugh, the Supreme Court decided a case on the exact same logic.

how does QR code menus have anything to do with how often your water is getting refilled
Do y’all not browse the menu of the restaurant you’re going to beforehand? I get wanting the restaurant experience but I never considered reading the menu to be a major part of it.
