RIP to GZA. One vote away from advancing to this rd but I never thought it'd make it as far as it did. I knew Liquid Swords was highly regarded with hip-hop heads but didn't think it was so universally liked. Props to inforoo for recognizing the genius.

Ill Communication is a classic but Aquemini is just a better record and overall more important to pop music IMO.
Glad to see R.E.M. make it this far, the band hasn't done a great job of shepherding their legacy and I think we forget how massive this weird little college band got. But Automatic For The People isn't as important as OKC. Not many records are (if any) when it comes to 90s pop.
All Eyez on Me vs. The Chronic is another tough one. IMO All Eyez On Me is a better record, more good songs, but The Chronic single-handedly changed the sound of hip-hop and thus popular music. And the classics on The Chronic are bigger than the classics on All Eyez On Me.
All respect to Pearl Jam but subjectively TDS is one of my favorite records of all time. Absolutely crucial to my musical taste, and way more bold of an artistic statement than Ten.
Gotta give it to ATCQ here because Outkast already got Aquemini.
Love Homework, big record for me, but Discovery was their biggest and you can't dispute Nevermind as the biggest record of the 90s. Nevermind vs. OKC? Nevermind told us how it was, OKC told us how it was going to be.
RATM just because I like it more than Illmatic.
Respect to Alanis but 36 Chambers wins. I'm personally more of a Forever guy but 36 Chambers was so different and fresh when it dropped.

I see you mention a lot about which albums are "more important" than others which is definitely fair. But just to clarify, this is supposed to be a personal preference thing... not so much which album is universally liked more or "more important." Like, I agree The Chronic was probably more important to hip-hop, specifically west coast rap, but I personally rank All Eyez on Me higher (like you did) so I voted for it. Same goes for a bunch of other matchups throughout this tourney so far. If we just went with the most universally liked or important ones, I think we could all pretty much come to the same conclusion about the top ones of the decade. But I was hoping to get more of everyone's personal preference. And we did get some upsets throughout these matchups, so that's cool to see.
And Wu is kicking ass right now but no one can convince me that Jagged Little Pill isn't a top 10 album of the 90s, if not all-time. RIP Alanis... our last female representative left.

got it. to be clear i have (mostly) been voting subjectively. even when i say an album is "more important", that weighs into my personal enjoyment of the album. like when i listen to "the chronic", i enjoy it because i love these songs, but my enjoyment is enhanced by the fact that this album represented a radical turning point in pop music production. not to say hip-hop wasn't groovy before The Chronic, but the album did represent a radical shift towards groove and funk, made hip-hop much more danceable, and strangely much more digestible by the masses, despite the gritty nature of the beats and lyrics. the greatness of that dr. dre production, the D.O.C.'s lyrics, identification of unique talent in MCs like Snoop Dogg, it was just such a collision of so many incredible factors.
so while yes i love the songs themselves, the history and seminal nature of the record gives me goosebumps and activates those pleasure chemicals pouring across my body. we can definitely over intellectualize or over analyze music, but IMO a little bit of background knowledge and context can increase your appreciation. but it's kind of like how you can get more enjoyment out of reading Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy by having a familiarity with John Le Carre's earlier works and seeing his growth as a writer, but also the types of mystery and spy stories that were told before Le Carre brought his cold, morally ambiguous lens to the genre.
