Big Names Bonnie Raitt - can't believe she hasn't played since the 80s Fiona Apple - this might be like putting D'Angelo on my list, but I can dream Lucinda Williams - similar to Bonnie, looks like it's been 20 years since her last appearance Spoon - my favorite band, gotta shout them out The War on Drugs - with some Lucius backing vocals Vampire Weekend - would be a really fun Fort set
R&B - Could use more of this at Newport, Jazz fest has been getting much better pulls from here than Folk Jamila Woods Lady Wray Lianne La Havas Sudan Archives
Indie Bands Bully Flock of Dimes - not sure what her new stuff will be like, so this could fit into the next category Ratboys Wednesday
Stripped Down Sets Damien Jurado Jake Xerxes Fussell Joanna Sternberg - loving the new album
Folk Family We Haven’t Seen in a Bit Big Thief Brittany Howard Charley Crockett Feist - saw her this year, fantastic show Fleet Foxes Gillian Welch Josh Ritter Laura Marling

I feel like no boygunius this year was a huge miss. Noah Kahan is almost guaranteed for next year. I would also like to see Beabadoobee get invited back(cancelled in ‘22) and girl in red.

Mitski is a good one. Very surprising Ben Howard hasn't played yet. Vulfpeck would be a ton of fun. And I'm always down for some Hiss

I have a much bigger list but here are some of the smaller names or names the folk crowd may be less familiar with (with a song recommendation for each in case somebody doesn't know them).
The Lemon Twigs - When Winter Comes Around (New album, Everything Harmony, has been on repeat for a couple months outside of prepping for Newport... Reminds me of Beach Boys meets Badfinger) Buck Meek - Cannonball! Pt. 2 Post Malone - Laugh It Off (Obviously a big name but due to his genre he may have escaped the ears of some people in here? New album is still heavily produced but is stripped back in comparison to the rest of his discography) Alberta Cross - ATX (Had never heard of this guy/band but he recently liked a bunch of my Instagram stories at Newport so the festival must be on his radar... follows Jay Sweet, everybody from Deer Tick/Happiness, etc.) Daniel Norgren - Rolling Rolling Rolling Greg Freeman - Colorado Alex G - Mission (Went with a song that should be agreeable to the folk crowd but like Bon Iver, he gets very experimental - check out Blessing if you want to hear the weird stuff) Idles - Danny Nedelko (I've been on this island for years but they would be great) Parquet Courts - Freebird II (Wide Awake! is one of the best albums of the last ten years and blends southern rock, punk, and funk masterfully) Terry Reid - Seed of Memory (Another island I've been on for years. If you don't know Terry Reid, he was originally slated to be the singer in Led Zeppelin but turned them down and recommended Plant. I requested him years ago on Twitter and he liked it which led to NFF following him on social media but it looks like they don't follow him anymore) Bully - All This Noise Rafay Rashid - Pain Palace (How have we never had a legitimate Rafay/Ravi Shavi set?) Daughter - Dandelion Ben Howard - Spirit (Haven't listened to him since his debut album but his new album is really interesting) Wet Leg - Wet Dream Black Country, New Road - Up Song (I'm iffy on this since Isaac left the band but the music is still quality - listen to Basketball Shoes for Isaac-era BC,NR) Jockstrap - Concrete Over Water (Georgia from BC,NR's side project - similar to Sylvan Esso but closer to folk) Richard Dawson - Ogre Johnny Flynn - Tickle Me Pink Marlon Williams - My Heart the Wormhole (Has played before but I think his newest album is his best and marks a complete change in style) Julia Jacklin - Pressure to Party The Marias - Calling U Back
Upcoming Shows: August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Wants/expectations for next year: Noah Kahan - Feel this one is very obvious with the cancellation. He's coming back as the Friday indie headliner for next year. Orville Peck - Made a comment on social media recently about working to reschedule the cancelled dates. I'm guessing Jay and gang asked him back. Trixie Mattel - While we're at Orville, having Trixie at the festival would be HUGE! Could see them hosting an after party together. Electric Mayhem - Could pass off the appearances of Animal and Floyd Pepper as them scoping out the fest to play next year. Guster - Saw some chatter recently on Twitter about them being interested in playing for a long while. Feel they are overdue for an appearance. Orebolo - Goose guys seem to love playing this fest and this would be a great way to get Goose into the fest without a dedicated Goose set. Would be a great after party benefit for the Congregational Church or Casino Theater. Boygenius - NFF doesnt typically get bands on big touring cycles so given a year removed, I think Boygenius is certainly a possibility. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - My out of the box booking that I would die to see. The Shins - Still shocked they havent played since James Mercer popped in a few years back. Big Thief - Thought they were a lock for this year. There's always 2024. Buck Meek also touring into 2024 so there is an option there too. Ethel Cain - Anotgher artist who I thought would be a lock for this year. She's having a huge year and would be a fantastic booking. Joanna Sternberg - Should be invited back after a fantastic performance at the Piano Recital. Bob Dylan - I know. I know. It's incredibly unrealistic and he probably has zero incentive to play the festival, but with it being an anniversary year and rumors swirling that Dylan is retiring from the road at the end of 2024, I'm sure the festival is going to make a pass at him. Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country - Great fit for the festival and his stock keeps rising. Sammy Rae and the Friends - A band made to bring down the Quad. Bob Weir & Wolf Bros - With Dead & Co. no longer touring, I think the fest could work at getting Bobby.

Didn't know Joanna Sternberg was at the Piano Recital, I heard Johanna Samuels was. I'd be down for either.

My core hopefuls: Noah Kahan Orville Peck Kacey Musgraves Chris Stapleton The War On Drugs Frank Turner Low Cut Connie Boygenius Fleet Foxes Father John Misty Haim Melt Couch Goose (yes, again, they're the best)
A little less NFF-core: Dermot Kennedy Gang Of Youths The Menzingers Turnstile Japandroids The Gaslight Anthem Carly Rae Jepsen Arkells Inhaler Vampire Weekend Weezer any of the good pop-punk/emo bands (The Wonder Years, Spanish Love Songs, Origami Angel, Mom Jeans, PUP, Hot Mulligan, Pool Kids, Oso Oso)
Pipe dream wishlist: Bruce Springsteen Radiohead Arcade Fire (maybe the least pipedreamy) Taylor Swift
This would be cool, maybe like the BADBADNOTGOOD versions from last week
Yeah i wanted to like that EP more than i actually do, but would be down with that sort of thing at NFF for sure. Was thinking more like their NPR Tiny Desk set that was awesome.
Noah is on my 2024 hopefuls list, but I’m skeptical of him returning. He’s going to be in high demand. And I wouldn’t doubt that he’ll spend next summer on the European festival circuit after playing through the US festival circuit this summer.
Noah Kahan (self explanatory - although I do think it’s far from a certainty given that he’ll be in high demand next summer and could be on the European festival circuit)
Dropkick Murphys (if Newport struggles to get relevant artists on primary tours; maybe they can get Dropkick next year)
Angie McMahon (she’s due for a Museum Stage promotion and has a new album coming out)
Sleater Kinney (was really hoping this would be the year after that covers album with a lot of folk family love - but maybe they can get the Dinosaur Jr. set slot next year)
The Front Bottoms (perfect fit for Newport)
Orville Peck (no explanation)
Trixie Mattel (drag folk would be great at Newport)
Diplo (would love to recreate that Sylvan Esso energy, and having Diplo do a country/folk set might be a fun outside booking)
Boygenius (homegrown headliner - but I’m assuming this will be a tough booking as they’ll be back to solo stuff by this time next summer)
Wu Tang/GZA and Soul Rebels (one can wish)
The Middle Kids (throw them in that Beths slot)
Wet Leg (was really hoping for them this year - so I’ll push those hopes back to next year)
Gracie Abrams & Aaron Dessner (I’ve seen other T Swift openers mentioned here; given that she’s playing some intimate shows with Aaron, that could translate well to Newport)

Here's an idea: Epic Folk Supergroup Showdown 2 or even 3 hour quad set that features only bands made up of two or more members of different bands. Each band only plays a couple of songs in a true Battle of the Bands style. Chris Funk or Chris Thile could MC. Could include: Glorietta Middle Brother Monsters of Folk Boygenius Highwomen I'm With Her The New Basement Tapes
New Supergroups could form in order to participate.
On a separate note, I love this message board. You all bring such broad knowledge of music and it has introduced me to so many new artists. With that I have created a playlist based on many (but not all) of the bands listed as recommendations here. It has already helped me through one gym session (*though some of these bands are certainly not gym music.)

I'm hopeful for this too, she had some great stuff on her debut. Looking forward to hearing more of the new songs
Loving the single “Letting Go” and excited for the album.
Whereas it seems like Newport struggles to grab British artists (in the peak summer festival season), Newport has always done well nabbing Australian/New Zealand artists during their winter.

So never explored Vulfpeck in spite of them being mentioned a few times on these boards. And now have fallen deep for them over the past week. They are fantastic and seem so much fun live. I would love to have them come to Newport. Wonder why we would think they would be Left Field (ish)? I think they seem perfect.
