I don’t understand why people can’t wrap their heads around Gil and Dave being a headliner. They have not toured in 6 years. They deserve it without that fact.

They’re elder statesmen of the fest, highly respected by the other artists. They’re students of the standards. Could easily have a few cool guests pop in to give new life to one their originals or a classic. It makes way more sense to me than War on Drugs.

Mentioned it yesterday, but John Paul Jones would be epic on the mando. They play together occasionally.

probably because they're objectively smaller than any of the other acts that have headlined in recent years. and yeah they're bluegrass/folk legends but that's an act that's going to get a lot of "who?" from the majority of the attendees, like it or not.

also believing literally anybody from Reddit is a fool's errand, but Killer Mike on the Fort would be absolutely incredible just for the reaction it provokes from the chair and blanket crowd.

To be fair, My morning jacket and John batiste also got this reaction

outside of the "NFF-core" bubble, i just dont think they're that recognizable. not saying every headliner has to be someone i listen to like i'm some beacon of taste, but i legit had never heard of them (or at least don't remember hearing of them) before they were announced for this. and while, again, i'm not as plugged into NFF-core music and lean poppier/rockier so it's not really my style, i still have at least heard of every headliner (outside of collab sets) that they've had over at least the last several years. you may be right that they deserve it and are worthy, but they're just not close to being as widely known as past headliners, which i assume is why people don't get it, if it's true.

Were you around for the 65 Revisited set in 2015? They lead that set.

eh, MMJ maybe from some of the 65+ crowd, but they're a big touring name and regularly headliner smaller fests or occupy high-profile slots at larger ones. And Batiste is probably better known than you'd think - he won the Grammy for AOTY the year before he headlined, won an Oscar for the Soul soundtrack, was the bandleader on Colbert for like 8 years, etc.
I don't have a problem if Gillian/Dave are the headliners, but I get why people might be kind of confused.

I wouldn’t say I’m super tuned into folk (I didn’t know who Joan Baez, Tracy Chapman, or Mavis Staples were) either, and I’ve historically listened to more alternative/pop, but I’d heard her name, and when listened to some of her stuff (especially what was in O Brother, Where Art Thou?), it was a, “oh, THAT’S her” moment. And some other, “oh, I didn’t realize that was a cover of her” songs. My husband was shocked I didn’t know the song Revelator, and he’s not that tuned in either, outside of some music that NPR promotes.
MMJ I’d heard of but couldn’t name any of their songs, and I’m not sure about Jon Baptiste.
I like Dave and Gillian (not a superfan though) but I agree it’s a rather weak headliner booking. Is it any weaker than Patti Smith or Flight of the Concords though? Probably not. But plenty of “legendary” acts play Newport and don’t get booked as a headliner: Del McCoury, Nickel Creek, Trey Anastasio, The Roots, Warren Haynes, etc. So I wouldn’t think that alone is enough to justify it as a strong booking.
That said, if it’s a guest filled set I think it makes sense. And they have the possibility to bring a guest filled set. So my expectations are very high. (Especially since the last time they headlined they brought out the rotating guests.) But I’ll admittedly be a little disappointed if it turns out to be just the two of them.

Hanif Abdurraqib is going to be at the Monday Pickens show with Joan. He seems to write a lot of pieces about various musicians, including Dave and Gil. Assume he will be by the fest as well.
Looks like Newport Harbor Island Resort is showing as a partner now on website. Wonder if there is possibility of an after show there. Similar to that year they had one at Bel Mer.

That’s cool. Especially with the unofficial warm ups taking place there in years past. Didn’t Phill Cool do something last year before his official quad set? Easy water transport for talent too.
Interesting…connections to Dawes through touring and Mandy Moore production, Andrew Bird through touring and Nickel Creek touring/ Watkins Family Hour production, and Cory Wong through Vulfpeck. I suppose he could show up on any of those sets…unless he’s on the Bike Stage?

People in a Reddit thread are talking about getting on the Waitlist in April of this year and already getting tickets and "a few weeks late" last year and getting tickets the week of the festival. Meanwhile I joined the waitlist both years within one minute of sellout for all ticket types and haven't had a single offer either year.
Upcoming Shows: July 19: Noah Kahan/Mt. Joy July 26: Newport Folk Festival August 7: Green Day/Smashing Pumpkins/Rancid/The Linda Lindas August 30: Waxahatchee/Snail Mail/Tim Heidecker September 17: Pearl Jam/Glen Hansard September 24: Idles/English Teacher

Dice needs to go.
I’m actually curious if they (dice, festival) are using DoB to pick and choose people off the wait list. They’re either sorting the waitlist by a specific identifier, or it’s just a complete free for all. Because it makes no sense.
The number of tickets thing gets me with Dice. For a festival that’s entirely GA and has significant demand for resale tickets, there’s no need to sort people by the number of tickets requested. If you put in for 3 tickets, you shouldn’t have to wait in a separate set of 3 queue that only moves when people return 3 tickets at a time. You should be in a more general queue and move up every time a ticket is resold and when you’re at the front of the line Dice offers you one at a time when they become available until you’ve been offered 3.
I’m convinced this mechanism is why Dice doesn’t tell you your spot in line (since there are so many lines for different ticket types and different number of tickets) and is also why people who make requests later sometimes get picked earlier.

yeah, its wild. make me wonder if there's a more advantageous number to request - i have to feel like requesting a single is kinda hard, because how many people are just buying one ticket to begin with?
for what its worth ive gotten off the waitlist every year and I always ask for two tickets.
