So I'm going to an event this evening and the Cousins Maine Lobster truck will be there. It's quite a treat for me in this land locked state. So I plan on robbing a bank on the way and getting a roll. But which one?
CONNECTICUT Maine lobster, served warm with butter and lemon, on a New England roll
MAINE Maine lobster, served chilled, touch of mayo, on a New England Roll
CAPE COD Maine lobster, lightly breaded & fried, with tartar sauce & lemon, on a New England roll

Speaking as a new englander who consumes a shocking amount of lobster rolls, Connecticut style is by far the best, followed by Maine, followed by Cape Cod. Breading and frying the lobster hides its natural flavor, and the Maine version is basically just lobster salad, which can be fine, but you also run the risk of basically just getting the mayo and herb flavor coming through. Connecticut style is lobster at its best a purest form.

They’re here all the time. Get Connecticut and Maine. You’ll want more than one and both of them are good. If you can only afford one Connecticut is better. Is a lobster roll a sandwich?

I think I’ve only really eaten lobster rolls in Cape Cod, but it sounds like they were actually Maine style and they were pretty great. The Cape Cod style sounds pretty great also.

Second Juggs' vote. I feel like the lobster gets lost in Maine. I feel like it could be anything under all that. Imitation crab? Sure, why not!
Also, think about your regular leftovers. Can you eat your leftovers cold? Sure! But isn't it better if you take the time to heat it up? Doesn't the heat enhance the flavor of the food? (Funny coming from me as I often eat my leftovers cold.)
Crazy thing is that after 38 years living in New England, I have never even heard of a Cape Cod roll, but I feel like fried hides everything. Don't get me wrong, I love my fried egg rolls and such, but I feel like the seafood is lost when fried (clam strips, whole bellies, etc.).
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.

Fried seafood is delicious. Fried shrimp, crawfish, oysters, fish... I'm sure fried lobster is as well. It's all about the batter.

as maybe the only one here from maine (? speak up if not pls), that style is my platonic ideal and will never steer anyone wrong BUT connecticut is wonderful in a “what isn’t to like about warm buttered lobster on a toasted roll” sense and won’t fault someone for going that way
If the choice is between butter and mayo, always go butter. Butter does a better job of highlighting the flavour of the lobster, and for me, mayo quickly crosses a threshold where too much becomes unpleasant. There is such a thing as too much butter, but it takes a lot longer to get there.
There's no food I miss more from New England than a proper lobster roll. When I first moved back to Sydney, there was a local place doing lobster rolls that shuttered within the first year. They were good, but a little small and a little too fancy for what I was craving. Lobster is insanely expensive here because it basically all gets exported, and they were trying to zhuzh it up to justify the price, when really it's a very simple sandwich and shines best when not overloaded with tobiko or whatever. Monie and I recently went to a local food festival, and one of the vendors was a lobster roll pop-up I'd been hearing about. I almost cried tears of joy when I got it - simply made, good portion size, reasonably priced, good quality ingredients with large chunks of meat. A thing of beauty. They opened their first brick and mortar location last week and I am so excited for it.

I'm not saying it's bad. Just that the friedness hides the deliciousness within. I don't find that frying most seafood enhances it.

I’m not going to pretend I don’t indulge in the occasional fish and chips or tempura prawn (one fancy restaurant near us serves fried oysters which sounds weird but they’re so good) - but seafood shines best when it’s fresh and simply made.
Is it weird to get a craving for sashimi at 9:45 in the morning? Because that’s where I’m at.
