FQF lineup is out. Better believe I’ll be bugging you all for the can’t miss acts again this year. Esteban was all over it last year.
I don't know everyone because there are too many obscure stages and acts. Here are some notable ones, and I'm sure I'm missing some worthwhile shit. Also the poster isn't probably bout about 1/3 of the acts that are going to play.
Thursday Ivan Neville - Dumpstaphunk keyboardist, plays with Meters guys a lot Big Freedia - Bounce Queen Bonerama - Trombone band that plays a lot of local stuff and classic rock on trombone Uptown Jazz Orchestra Kermit Ruffins & BBQ Swingers (local jazz/brass party band) Preservation Hall Brass Rebirth Brass Band (street brass)
Friday TBC Brass Band featuring Hasizzle (bounce rapper) Alfred Banks - Conscious rapper playing with a sax duo (sax kix ave) Amanda Shaw - Violin player if you like more poppier louisiana music Bon Bon Vivant - Sort of if Americana was faster and dancier (I think Vieux likes them) George Porter Jr. & Runnin' Pardners (Meters' bassist and one of his bands) Higher Heights Reggae Band - Been around for 30ish years Hot 8 Brass Band (street brass) Iceman Special - Swampy but kind of blues-psychedelic swamp rock Storyville Stompers Brass Band (street brass) Soul Rebels (street brass with rap) Tin Men - They'll play anything from Black Sabbath to Rollin on the River. It's Washboard Chaz playing washboard, a tuba and a guitar
Saturday Charmain Neville - She's the Neville sister and a local roots singer Shamarr Allen - plays a small saxaphone (soprano?) with a band Sweet Crude - Sort of a folk-rock band that sings in English and French
Sunday Astral Project - Superstar modern jazz band Brass-a-holics - Street Brass Dwayne Dopsie and Zydeco Hellraisers - Sort of a rocked up modern zydeco band (son or younger brother of the OG Rockin Dopsie) Erica Falls - Female vocalist (used to sing with Galactic for a while) Flow Tribe - Kind of a goofy funk band but okay Jeremy Davenport - Trumpeter Dirty Dozen - Street Brass but on the jazzy side Klezmer All-stars - Ben Ellman of Galactic's klezmer band project
9:35pm edit - jamming on Bomba Estereo. Can’t fucking wait.
Daily lineups came out last year on February 3rd. I know they sometimes come later in the month or whatever. Haven't heard anything yet, but hopefully we'll get those this week or next and I can figure out what I have to buy and when I'm going besides second weekend Friday/Saturday and first weekend Thursday.
Lots of shit got announced this week as far as night shows. Cory Wong will be in town playing with Dumpstaphunk. This probably means that he'll be around at least a few days and should pop up at different events. He's playing first Friday with Dumpstaphunk but I don't know what the details are. Is it just him? Is it Wong Notes, Fearless Flyers, with Special Guests, with Dumpstaphunk? It just says Cory Wong And Dumpstaphunk. Fillmore Friday April 26th. Strong chance I'll be at this.
Other semi-new stuff - Mavis Staples and New Breed Brass Band playing Civic first Sunday, Revivalists playing Fillmore first Sunday, Chicano Batman playing House of Blues first Sunday, Kitchen Dwellers doing a bluegrass tribute to Dr. John the first Sunday at Toulouse Theater, The Heavy Heavy (on Bonnaroo but I don't know them) have 2 shows - one at 1am @ Chickie Wah Wah second Thursday and also playing with Neal Francis at Tips second Saturday.
Happy Mardi Gras to you New Orleans locals! Jazz Fest & Mardi Gras are always the times I get the most homesick for NOLA. Have a fun & safe time at the parades, catch a Muses shoe for me, and look for my many family friends in the Rollin' Elvi throughout the weekend.

I am wallowing and making my costume for Mardi Gras day, since I can't skate in Muses tonight due to still being broken.
I only have to style my wig, which just got delivered though. So I am actually really ready for Mardi Gras.

Got some videos and photos sent over. Ladies spoofing music festivals? Bongaroo? Museapolooza? Not sure what else but that’s kind of a random target to go after.

I didn't get around to doing any creative parody stuff this year, so I went to She Comes in Peace www.shecomesinpeace.com and picked up a shiesty mask from there and will wear that. Only issue is I'm going to be drinking from a straw all day, and I hate straws.
Still haven't booked a place. What's the best way to go about it? Book a place closer to the fest? I know some areas are pretty sketch.
Uhhh you need to get on that shit. What are you plans when here? Just JazzFest or are you looking to do some downtown/French Quarter/Marigny shit? I would book in between the Fairgrounds and the Quarter. There are some sketchy areas around there but there is a large gentrified areas around there as well.
If you were to stay in the mid-city Bayou St. John area you will be much farther from the CBD and Quarter than if you were to stay closer to Esplanade/Treme area. Some parts are nice some are not as nice it's one of those this block is good but this isn't situations.
I think if I was coming in, I would probably try to stay somewhere around the Marigny/South 7th ward areas, near Esplanade/Elysian Fields/St. Claude.
esteban is probably better with this shit, but if you send listing you are looking at, we can yay or nay them. I would get on it this week because prices are going to increase the closer to the festival and after Mardi Gras is over (this upcoming Tuesday).

Close to the festival isn’t sketchy really in any direction. But it’s not probably cheap. If you stay in a hotel downtown get the shuttle pass. VBRO Home Away or Air B&B are your best bets. Mid-City is close. That’s where I live when I’m in New Orleans. I walk to the festival (about a mile) and it’s about 2 miles to downtown the other way. I’d offer you the couch but I know you said you were coming with friends. Otherwise listen to Vieux and throw us any possible places and we’d be happy to tell you what we think about a specific place or area.

Thanks guys. The only reason I am this late to book is because of my friends lol. They won some free trip givewaway that (of course) fell on the same weekend. I haven't gotten a straight answer from them on what they are doing so I'm prepared to just go solo. I do have a local friend down there that would plan to go with me anyway.
I'm looking to be closer to the fest, even though I'll definitely check out some late shows and go out in the quarter at night. I figure that's the best route. There's a bunch of places available on/next to Espalante. Right before or after RT 10 in the Treme and Seventh Ward. That's the area I figured would be best? Also some spots farther northeast in seventh ward but I've heard that may not be ideal? I assume walking alone during the day is ok but not at night?

I’ll walk anytime. Obviously you don’t want to go down untraveled streets but there will be 100,000 extra people in the city, so I wouldn’t so much worry about that. Like I said, you’re welcome to the couch if you need it.

I do appreciate the offer! Def need to meetup. I am going to book a place for sure, there's a good chance a different friend ends up being able to go last minute and use the other friends ticket.
Yeah word. Daily’s should be out after Mardi Gras and I’ll let you know what I’m hitting up second weekend. I’ll for sure be at the festival Friday and Saturday but I haven’t started looking at the night shit. Probably will catch Stones from outside that Thurs.

Agreed. Some farther northeast is sketch. I walk anywhere anytime, BUT I pay attention to my surrounds. Nola is like any big city, be aware of your surrounding.

looking forward to those dailies, doing two weekends in a row is tough but i'd love to see vampire weekend weekend one and ny&ch weekend two.
if VW is 1st friday and panic is 1st thursday i might do thurs-fri first weekend. i want to say we somehow determined neil is second saturday? then i'd just drive over for saturday and drive back like with dead and co.

i wonder which day it will rain lol.
Yeah Neil is Saturday, Foos Friday second weekend. Ima see Panic and hopefully Cimafunk on first Thursday and I’ll go whatever day Bomba Estereo plays that weekend since I want to see them. Only thing nixed is Sunday night second weekend because I have to drive to Panama City that Monday morning. We usually go to the 3am Break Science show Monday am, but that’s not happening.
still TBD but not looking too likely unfortunately.
i take my big board exam so weekend 1 is probably a wash, and we have some pre-wedding shit going on the Saturday of weekend 2. may try to hit Daze Between fest, Stones from outside, or Friday of weekend 2

I booked an Airbnb a couple blocks from the Esplanade and 90 intersection. Looks to be a 20 minute walk maybe? Wasn't going to get better than that. Def want to see everyone! All are welcome to meet up! Stop by for a beer even on the way in/out.

Edit- weekend 2 to note. I'll be there Wed-Sun
you'll love being able to walk to and from the fest, ubers can be a bit of a mess post fest. you'll be going to the Sauvage entrance which is my favorite entrance since you start out right by the Gospel Tent which is appropriate considered the hallowed ground you are entering (and don't sleep on the gospel tent, some of the best musicianship you'll encounter will be in there). and it's a fun walk too, i'm usually coming from the other direction, i park off Moss street across from City Park, but you'll start to encounter other festival goers, and the closer you get to the fest you'll encounter houses all decked out with decorations and people hanging out and cooking and partying. nobody does it like new orleans, they really embrace jazz fest as a holiday and the vibe is awesome.

The Rolling Stones day seems to be a lost cause for VIP, but might try to get VIP for Foo Fighters/Neil days. I assume they will still do one day tickets for those days.
