Decent day 1. I went solo but was meeting up with a few groups of people. I also ran into Sgt. Blotter which was cool as I hadn't seen him in a while. Kind of a low-key day for me, but it was all good. I got there and the line for tickets was pretty long vs. the entrance line which usually is the other way around. So I said fuck it and just bought a ticket on my phone and walked right in. I wanted to go to the International Pavilion to get me some Colombian food. I thought about getting potato/chicken empanada but they were hand making, stuffing and frying, and there was already a line. So I went with the Ceviche Vegitales (vegetarian ceviche) which was a bunch of cold, fresh vegetables in a ceviche marinade. Very nice. Shitty wine offering was Sutter Home. So I got one of those and decided to drink a couple of Leininkugel Summer Shandy's even though I kind of don't drink beer anymore. Met up with the first group of friends at the main stage and watched Papa Mali Trio (he used to be in Austin's Killer Bees I think). They were solid but it was kind of eh. Next was Cimafunk with his large band. He and they were great as always and lots of fun. It was also at the main stage with a bunch of Panic fans beginning to filter in. You figure jam fans will appreciate the funk in whatever language, and it didn't take that long for much of the crowd to get dancing. A buddy of mine and his wife (mega Panic fans) I was hanging with were appreciative of me tipping them off that it would be good. I stayed at the main stage for Panic and met up with some other friends who were nearby. Panic was great as ever. They're never perfect, and I wouldn't want them to be. But it was a rocked up show. Setlist was Wondering > Greta > Pleas > Little by Little > Saint Ex > Walking for your love > Tall Boy > Christmas Katie > Radio Child > King Baby > Bust it Big > We Walk Each Other Home > You Wreck Me (Petty) > Pigeons > Arleen > All Time Low > Climb to Safety and Ain't Life Grand. There were the usual couple of trippy interludes and lots of extended jams for the 2 1/2 hour set. Always good to get some Panic in.
Tonight is Cory Wong and Dumpstaphunk, and I think I'm going to the festival tomorrow. It'll be a game day decision but I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing except watching the Pelicans game which I can watch on my phone.
Just passed by The Joy and .Paak & TFN was on the billboard for a show with Tank & Bangaz. Shows up as Global Jam. Definitely would hit that tonight had I known. But Cory it is.
We went to Dumpstaphunk and Cory Wong last night. Both were pretty great. Dumpstaphunk’s show was probably the best I’ve seen them. They played with some of Cory’s brass guys who I think might have been Wong Notes brass but he has so many bands I’m not 100%. The white guy was playing either bass or other guitar and I asked somebody there about Nick Daniels who I heard had been ill but it turns out he died yesterday. RIP. They were fn good. Cory’s band was outstanding. Gonna shake off this lingering buzz in a couple hours to head to the festival. Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway along with Bomba Estereo are what I’m most looking forward to today.

Yeah I’m thinking about going there next week for the Lettuce show since J Jamm is going. So I’ll definitely find your Jeremy if so. I heard .PAAK ended up doing a super late night set at Reublic for like $60-70. I was pretty ripped so it’s probably best I went home after Cory Wong ended.
Ladies day today mostly for me. I’m about to head down there and plan to see Bomba Estereo, Molly, Freedia and at least some of Heart. I saw Heart in Fort Walton early MTV era when they sucked (like 84). But they’ve redeemed themselves. Hoping for mostly Dreamboat Annie and Dog and Butterfly early shit.
It was another fun day today. I went in a little after 2 so I could get shit handled and see Bomba Estereo. They played at Congo Square stage and it was relatively packed like most of the festival was today. There was double the people at least than Thursday. It was the first time I got to see them. They brought some other Colombian artists on stage for a yellow red and blue super jam. Then they brought out Win Butler and Regine to do Everything Now. That was a treat. I know the local creeper stories but it sounded great with all the singers on stage playing to the Latin cover. I ran into Regine later in the day and blew kisses to each other. Next stop was Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway. That stage was getting super packed for Stapleton so I was mostly on the perimeter. Show was as great as ever. I was glad she’s still covering White Rabbit and sang along to that. Later she ditched the wig and just played in her pink dress with that shiny and freshly balded head. A highlight was this old guy rolling his ass off and spinning around. The Allman Brothers cover was great too. After Molly was done I walked over to in progress Freedia bringing people up on stage for Azz Everywhere. You can easily imagine asses of all shapes and sizes trying to twerk. She kept people up on stage and one of our friends was up there and did a split drop during Go Duffy. Fun as usual. I saw Ben from Galactic at that set. I fucked up and looked at Sundays other headliners and thought Heart was playing. But I get over to that side and it’s Vampire Weekend. I thought of Vieux and how much she hates them. Music sounded okay in parts but I managed about 10 minutes of light head bobbing and left that stage. I watched some of Coachella as well that people raved about. They don’t do anything for me but a lot of people were into it. So I’m sure their fans will love Bonnaroo. I decided to head back to the other side and passed by Fantasia who I don’t know but sounded good, Dirt Band which opened with some country, then Stapleton who I had just walked up and busted out Freebird. So I turned around and just went to the Jazz Tent and listened to Nicholas Payton with The Nth Power. Along with Molly, that was probably the best music of the day. I decided not to do shit tonight and don’t have plans for tomorrow. But I might go outside to hear AP & TFN if I’m not doing anything in the evening. I got the bbq oysters today which were tasty. They gave you a half dozen fried oysters and served them on baguette slices with Worcestershire butter. Generally those aren’t fried but it was a nice take. Then I got some vegetarian red beans and rice. That was pretty good too. I tried to get some shrimp bun later but they only had beef left. So I’ll try that next weekend.
I’m sitting outside jamming with Paak and Free Nationals thinking I might have fucked up a little. Not only are they good I missed that Sierra Hull was playing with Fleck. Plus Juvy and Turk with Mannie Fresh was conflicting. But you win some you lose some. Still glad I walked that mile to come jam out. Supposedly he was tending bar at Toulouse Theater for a while and somebody posted that he said it was his 4th gig of the night (morning by then) so far. Not sure if he did any super late but it’s always good to see talented new blood come down and get into shit for a week or so during the festival and work to themselves in for the next generations. Btw this show sounds good.

esteban i 100% thought you were not attending on Saturday, I apologize for not reaching out to you.
had a good day at jazzfest. beautiful weather, crowded but not too insane. started with a cochon de lait as is tradition, then scoped out the Gentilly field to remind myself how it was structured (i haven't seen an act there in years, probably since MMJ). Saw a little bit of Boyfriend which was weird. Walked the track to the jazz tent for a bit of Jason Marsalis which was cool, then Wayne Toups at Acura which was also cool. Then Molly Tuttle who was great, as we all know. Then a bit of Charles Lloyd in the jazz tent, a cafe au lait and beignets to get the blood pumping, short visit to the jazztent, then over to Gentilly for Vampire Weekend.
VW's bassist had the flu so he was missing his first VW show ever, since 2006. To compensate they rotated in one of their drummers and one of their keyboardists into the bass slot every few songs which was fun. you could feel certain elements missing in certain songs, obviously, but it was cool to see them rally and put on a great show.
they took requests from the crowd at one point, doing snippets of "Hungry Heart" and "Peggy-O". setlist was good, especially glad to hear one of their new songs "Connect". the one song I really wanted to hear off the new album was "Ice Cream Piano" which is the perfect opener, but for some reason they've opened a couple sets now with "Classical" instead.
so on the way over i was also thinking about how much Vieux hates vampire weekend lol, and i was wondering if you've heard any of the new album? not going to ask you to subject yourself to a full listen but I am curious your opinion on the opening track of the album, the aforementioned "Ice Cream Piano". it's so good. i'm particularly biased because in the lyrics it uses a homophone which is a common jamband trope "in dreams i scream piano", which in this case "piano" meaning "softly" as it does in musical notation. something about those soft screams we do when we in dreaming. the song is so full of frustration but at the same time feels so triumphant and beautiful.

It's all good. I planned to go because I wanted to see Bomba Estereo and am glad I finally got to. I didn't know you would be there either as this thread is pretty silent most of the time. For next weekend, I plan to walk over Thursday and listen to the Stones outside unless I get a comped or seriously discounted ticket. I have a wristband for the rest of the weekend but plan to work on Friday, bug out a little early, and make it over at least for Foo Fighters but if i can get there earlier for E-Collective which is 4:10, I'll be there by then. Saturday I plan to go most of the day. I'll probably get in around 12ish so Cimarron/James Rivers Movement (James was killer last year and like 86 or 87 years old) > Joe Krown > Leo Nocentelli > Nickel Creek > Neil Young & CH. Not sure about Sunday. Seems like I'll end up there since I paid for it, but there isn't that much I want to see. I specifically don't care about the pre-HL shows but I'll find something to get into if I go and would probably split Earth Wind & Fire and Tower of Power if I went since I've seen Shorty enough and don't really care about Bonnie Raitt or George Thorogood & Destroyers though I'd sing along to I Drink Alone if I would happen to be passing by there if/when he played it.
I have not listened to the new album, but I have heard songs bc xmu did a VW takeover and bc some of the bartenders at Urban South like them and liked to torment me. Thank goodness yesterday was my last day there. 🤣😝

What you doing going back to film?
I got extra shifts at the J&K bar. So I'm working friday-Sunday's 1-7p, every other Monday 1-7p and Wednesday nights 7p-close.

I get in Wednesday afternoon. No real plans for that night, probably casino? I got grand marshal for the weekend pretty much exclusively to know I will be near the stage for the Stones. Likely out on frenchmen thursday night, and fri night Lettuce.

Nah, don't do casino. Get out into the city! Take streetcar up to Oak St and catch some music at the Maple Leaf if you want something easy.
Thank you all for your updates and reviews, esteban3post1jack1 & Vieux. I have major fomo/homesickness.
Excited as hell to hear how the Stones show goes...bout damn time this finally happened!
Happy Jazz Fest to all.
It’s been a good time so far though I’ve mostly been laying low. Cory Wong, Molly Tuttle, Cimafunk, Widespread and Dumpstaphunk the day Nick died were my favorite shows I went to. .Paak was great from outside. Good week ahead.

I gotta work Wednesday or would probably go to Daze Between. That’s Karina, KDTU, Mule and Galactic.
Word. I was there Friday for Cory but I ditched my car and ride banned me from detouring into that mfer. I love the Fillmore but I don’t love Caesar’s. It’s not the worst casino ever but they exploit tourism and jack the prices up for all the games. Maybe not terrible on a Wednesday but you can easily find a $5.00 table in Mississippi and possibly at Boomtown or Treasure Chest but they are mostly out the way. I don’t want to be forced to play 25.00 hands or rolls.
Got into Mule last minute. Kicking fucking some ass. More later but they been jamming with Dirty Dozen with all the guests yet to come. Atlanta in the house with that GA jam.
Good show with a bunch of guests. Grace Potter came out for a while and did some tunes. She wasn’t among tge announced guests. Lots of hippies as you’d expect at a JF Mule show. They said Daze would be back again wherever the venue might be.

I’ll be outside the gates behind main stage for the Stones. I’ll be in tomorrow around 3:15. Browell and his ole lady got tix so they’ll be there as well. Not sure if Postjack is coming in. Can definitely swing by there Saturday am if you need a ride or want to save on surge pricing. Just lmk.
as Esteban said, Meagan and I will be coming by tomorrow, mostly for Hozier! plan to get in a little bit after noon and piddle around on the grounds and snack on some food since Meagan has never been to Jazz
besides that we’ll probably do Anders Osborne > Galactic > Soul Rebels/Allison Russell > first 20 of Foo > Hozier
snacking on whatever we find good in between sets and running around, looking forward to a beautiful day!
