I have learned through my (almost) year here I really don’t listen to anything but Taylor Swift and Julien Baker and I wanna fix that. So I started this thread as kinda a diary but feel free to watch/comment along. I’m going to listen to Rolling Stone’s top 500 albums of all time. Probably one a day unless I feel like doing otherwise. Which I probably will.
Upcoming Shows: 5/15 - They Might Be Giants @ Madison Theater 6/2 - Pigeons PPP/Andy Frasco/Dogs in a Pile @ MEGACORP Pavilion 6/5 - Pixies/Modest Mouse/Cat Power @ Andrew J. Brady Center 6/13-6/16 - Bonnaroo 7/25 - Foo Fighters/Pretenders @ Great American Ballpark 7/26 - Jerry Harrison & Adrian Belew: Remain In Light @ Bogart's 7/28 - Brett Goldstein @ Taft Theatre 8/4 - Phish @ Deer Creek Music Center 8/17 - The Jayhawks @ Memorial Hall
there are 3 versions of the Rolling Stone list - 2003, 2012, and 2020
they're mostly the same, but if you can find a list that includes all 600 or whatever albums that appeared on any version you should go with that imo. broader variety!
edit: it's apparently 694, if this RYM list is to be believed

Dangit. I got the disc from the library based on that 2003 list, and I found it unlistenable at the time. I haven’t revisited it since. I wonder if I would still find it unlistenable.

500 - Arcade Fire - Funeral 1. Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - this is normally the kinda indie alternative rock whatever that would crank my tractor but I feel nothing strong about it. 6/10. Maybe 7. I like the music part more than the vocals. 2. Neighborhood #2 (Laika) - immediately +1 for the Christmas bell sounds i hate Christmas but i love those sounds. This song reminds me of something. I don’t know what. Like the vocals remind me of another song. “Say something once, why say it again?” Is that the Talking Heads? I could google that. I won’t. 5/10 3. Une Annee Sans Lumiere - love songs I can’t pronounce (see - Ptolomaea)! I’m trying to figure out if I’ve seen Arcade Fire before but I think it was Animal Collective. (Later Dolly - it was animal collective. You bought tickets for you and your bf at the time and then he backed out quite literally 15 mins before the show and you had to take his weird roommate. We hate those guys. Not animal collective. They were fine.) is this song in english? I don’t care either way really. Its my favorite so far. Oh it’s in english. Maybe I should wear headphones. But the bubble bath is so cozy. (Reminder - add 10 pts to AF final score because you’re being a jackass and not giving them a fair listen). This is my favorite so far. I think I already said that. (You did. Like 2 lines up.) oh yay there’s a guitar buildup! Okay fun. 8/10 4. neighborhood #3 (power out) - Hate. Maybe not. Not sure. I really should give this album a proper second listen. If anyone actually reads this rambling can you remind me when I get to the end of 500 albums i need to relisten. Or really whenever. Who cares. I do like this song. Sorry for being violent at the beginning. Its fine. The song I mean. Not me being violent. I like the end. I love guitars. Wish I could convince myself to learn something other than seven nation army. 7/10. Dolly interlude - please don’t be mad at my ratings. I didn’t know there was good music until like 3 months ago. I have a twenty one pilots tattoo. I’m just a girl. 5. Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles) - moving to 4 neighborhoods with 7! Kettles sounds like a bitch. I moved a lot growing up. Like a lot. It sucks. I am trying to win the powerball and buy the house I currently live in so I never have to move again. I would use the rest of the money to go to every game in Ole Miss’ football season in a suite, home and away, especially if LSU is at Death Valley because I want to see that. I’d put aside a big ole chunk for my nephew to go to college or not go to college and backpack europe or go to a trade school and use the rest to buy a house or something. See how I’m talking about nothing because this song is boring? 4/10 6. Crown of Love - My mamaw says if I don’t have anything nice to say not to say anything at all. 7. Wake Up - I cheated and skipped the last 1 minute of Crown of Love y’all I’m sorry I tried. I love the intro to this though. They’re redeeming themselves. I like this one a lot!!! I really don’t have a lot to say. I like the almost choir. And the scratchy guitar. 9/10. I love it. 8. Haiti - is this a different singer? Someone tell me. I like her. Is this like a The 1975 About You situation or does she do other songs too? What are they. Tell me. I like her. I like this song. This one I will definitely revisit with headphones. I really like this one. 10/10 9. Rebellion (Lies) - i like the intro. I hate this album for doing a real save the best for last situation. Oh my god they’re canadian. No wonder I have no clue what they’re talking about. I like this one. This is what I hear in my head when someone says 2000s indie. Like he sounds like he’s singing with a clementine in his mouth. 8/10 10. In the Backseat - SHE’S BACK EVERYONE CHEER!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh my god I love HER!!!!!!! Bye I’m buying a car so I can drive her around. OMG THE GUITAR YAYYYYYYYY 11/10

I had a similar idea the other day, I’m gonna try listening to the 1000 most popular albums on rateyourmusic. No idea how I’m documenting my progress but this is good inspiration to get it going
