499 - Ask Rufus - Rufus, Chaka Khan 1. At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up) - girl you better fucking work this is what I needed. Absolutely. I love this. 10/10 2. Close the Door - intro sounds like the theme song of a cop show my grandpa would have loved. Oh this is sexy. Oh i like this a lot! 8/10 3. Slow Screw Against The Wall - in my good Christian home? - past dolly. Okay present dolly is here. Is this going to be about fornication? It doesn’t sound like it. Old people were y’all doing the nasty to this? Are you okay? Oh okay she had nothing to say. 1/10 i guess? 4. Earth Song - if i could play guitar like this i genuinely would not do anything but that. To the point that someone would probably use that same guitar to beat me to death. Is this a love letter to the Earth? Am i going to weep? 7/10. 5. Everlasting Love - God I wish I could play guitar. This album is soooo sexy. I wanna give her an everlasting love wtf. 8/10 6. Hollywood - this is cute and fun. Not my favorite. 4/10 7. Magic in Your Eyes - i am yearning. Awe I want to be in love. This is sweet and sexy. I like it. 7/10 8. Better Days - this girl is so sexy what the hell is going on. God she has pipes. I love her. 8/10. 9. Egyptian Song - if i was born in the 60s i would have died by ‘81 GOD SHE CAN BELT 9/10
498 - Suicide - Suicide 1. Ghost Rider - I am going to love this album. 7/10 i feel like its going to pick up. 2. Rocket USA - i love how this sounds. Someone please tell me the genre. God I LOVE this. Are they all dead? Don’t tell me. 7/10. 3. Cheree - Wow this album being only 7 songs just pissed me off. I love this. There’s so many sounds. I am perfectly overstimulated. 9/10 4. Johnny - I LOVE NOISES!!!!!!!!!! Oh I’m so glad I put on headphones. I’m having an Experience. I like them talking in either ear. I got in bed and cut off all the lights for The Experience. I am loving this. 9/10. 5. Girl - “girl…. Turn me on” ok meeeee ;-P No actually this is my favorite album of the night. 8/10 only because the lesbian part of me doesn’t care for a man talking about how sexy women are. But I relate to the lyrics. 6. Frankie Teardrop - this song is 10 minutes long. I’m sure that’s fine. I am not scared. Frankie’s so desperate he’s going to what? Omg frankie chill. Frankie????????? “Let’s hear it for Frankie” me nervously laughing in the background. That scream cannot be good for the vocal chords. The guitar and noises sound really good though. I am not scared and I enjoy this song. I’m so glad there’s 5 more minutes. Is the entire 5 minutes more guitar and noise because I kinda love that. Oh frankie’s back. Okay good screaming again. I am actually enjoying this, does that mean I need to see my therapist again? Or do I just really enjoy guitars? Genuine 9/10 I did enjoy that a lot. 7. Che - where the fuck are we supposed to go after that. I love this sound. I love bass so much. I really do. I wish I could make music like this. 9/10
I have learned through my (almost) year here I really don’t listen to anything but Taylor Swift and Julien Baker and I wanna fix that. So I started this thread as kinda a diary but feel free to watch/comment along. I’m going to listen to Rolling Stone’s top 500 albums of all time. Probably one a day unless I feel like doing otherwise. Which I probably will.
I had a similar idea the other day, I’m gonna try listening to the 1000 most popular albums on rateyourmusic. No idea how I’m documenting my progress but this is good inspiration to get it going
I started something similar up earlier in the year and got about 50 deep before forgetting about it... might have to revive the project if this is really the Trend for 2024

I always get strong motivation to do things like this, then just end up distracted listening to whatever band is playing the local burrito restaurant later in the week

497 - Various Artists - The Indestructible Beat of Soweto 1. Awungilobolele - Udokotela Shange Namajaha - I obviously don't understand any of this because I am but a dumb monolingual american but I love the raspiness of the singer's voice and the string instruments. Sounds like there's a bass somewhere and I love bass. I like when the chorus sings along with him. Oh and there's animal noises! I might look up the english translation after work to see what's going on here. 8/12 2. Holotelani - Nelcy Sedibe - I love the intro And I like that there's a chorus of people singing with her/echoing her. 9/12 3. Qhude Manikiniki - Umahlathini Nabo - Oh this one is so fun. I like the contrast in voices. And I like the music part. 8/12 4. Indoda Yejazi Elimnyama - Amaswazi Emvelo - This album is fun and easy to listen to and enjoy. Even though I have no idea what they are talking about. Okay sorry I got pulled away for work. 8/12 5. Emthonjeni Womculo - Mahlathini, Makgona Tsohle Band - I am gonna be so honest rn, I am busy at work for once and don't have the thinking capacity to finish an album I don't understand, even though I am enjoying it. Capping it here at 33/120 and will finish later.

love the spirit of this project, but you need better source material than Rolling Stone!

Far be it from me to defend RS but if the goal is to learn more about music, those lists fill a lot of gaps without veering too far into deep cuts. Like if I was trying to get someone to check out John Coltrane, I’d absolutely suggest Love Supreme vs Ascension even though I think the latter is vastly superior. I’d like to believe these lists are in the same vein.
I love keeping up with this dollypaяton. Keep it up.

i mean, if i was going to intro someone to coltrane i would go My Favorite Things (or Blue Train)
A Love Supreme is still pretty comparably challenging for the uninitiated
