If you could have gone to any one past bonnaroo that you didn't get to attend, which would it be and why?
2009. last beastie boys show. springsteen, nine inch nails, david byrne, wilco, al green, merle haggard, del mccoury band, allen toussaint, booker t and the DBTs, david grisman quintet, lucinda williams, neko case, femi kuti and the positive force, KING SUNNY ADE. and phish of course.
i'd been sober for 4 years at that point and had been going to live music, but was still iffy about attending a large scale drug festival. ended up going to AV to see phish instead. in retrospect i would've been totally fine and had a blast at roo 2009.
I always cite 2009 as my least favorite of my five roos. Mostly because I went with a lame group who pretty much everyone in it was their first roo and weren't really vibing and couldn't get out of their comfort zones. The friday "late night" Phish show was my very first Phish show, and I remember everyone saying they were gonna blow past their allotted set time and go to sunrise. They didn't though and ended right at 2am which was a bit disappointing especially with only a bunch of cheesy EDM playing afterwards. But it was the year of the epic 4+ hour moe. marathon late night set which was dope. Always thought it was weird that after what I thought was a legendary show they never came back.

yeah that moe. show was incredible. easily the best show of theirs i've seen. I was honestly a little happy that I could go to bed early after phish so I could stick around til sunrise for that one. 4 and half hours, grace potter switchover, and no setbreak.
pretty sure I got the FLACs on like 5 CD-Rs somewhere.

more jambands need to do the no set break switchover. technically the first time i saw umphreys mcgee was when they did that with moe at the orpheum in new orleans, 2003.

I recall in my previous roos meeting people who had gone to the first one in 2022. Many of them talked about how moe.'s late night set that year blew everything out of the water so I was very much hoping they'd get a latenight in 2009 when I saw them on the lineup. Sure enough when the schedule came out and I saw them scheduled 1am to 4am I knew it was going down. I think they didn't come out until almost 1:30 but I know they played until almost 6am. I timed my mushrooms pretty well too but they still wore off before they stopped playing.

is that like when Big Gigantic played for like 20 minutes in the middle of Umphrey's set in 2012?

correct. i don't remember if big gigantic did this, but with moe and umphreys they did it mid jam, like one at a time they'd switch out with different musicians but keep the jam going, then you got a little mini umphreys set, and they passed it back to moe again during a jam. honestly it's some electrifying shit.

2004 is probably the year I wish I went that I didn't, although I was only 16 at the time and hadn't even heard of bonnaroo yet. That lineup is just jam perfection. The latenight Ween and Primus conflict was cruel though so as sad as I am I missed their LN sets I'm happy I didn't have to choose.
But yeah, The Dead. Trey. Bob Dylan. David Byrne, moe., Mule, Umphreys, String Cheese, Wilco, Ween, Primus, Praxis, and of course the My Morning Jacket in the rain show.

yep. that was another one. kinda of a lame one because it was big gigantic. in 2004, umphrey's went on a jam, and one by one a member of moe. would come out and start playing and someone from umphrey's would leave the stage. so the music never stopped. same thing with moe/grace potter in 2009.

the ween / primus conflict sucked, but i had to go with ween. actually i think primus ended up going later than ween, i distinctly remember hearing "tommy the cat" back at camp and being like damn it. ween ruled though. buckingham green opener, which is per science the best song any band can open with. closer of it's gunna be a long night, ace of spades, the blarney stone, booze me up and get me high, poopship destroyer. dream setlist.

Look at that beautiful schedule. So few acts. Such long set times. Such a dream.
i did primus. they played long and i went back to camp before they ended but I could still hear them, and my neighbors were sitting around and gave me a beer. A few years later (2009?) Les Claypool was playing on the Which stage in the afternoon and he said that in 2004 he'd eaten a bunch of mushrooms before their set.

2008. Yes I remember him saying that. That show was awesome and probably my favorite Les solo show.

2009. Final Beastie Boys show, Springsteen, 2x Phish, indie jackoff undercard. Watching the Fuse (rip) coverage that year is what put Bonnaroo on my radar in the first place
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

I re-subbed to nugs recently and have been listening to a lot of the recent BIsco tour. I never really got big into them back in my jamband heyday, but they've been really hot recently.
