Gambino fascinates me. Definition of a jack of all trades, master of none. Movie star - but he has never had a lead role in a movie (unless you count voicing Simba). TV star - supporting role on Communtiy and a lead role on a highly regarded, but niche, TV show. Music star - with like two hits.
His Coachella show was a fucking snoozefest and was the hardest headlining show I've ever had to get through, but my wife loved it. He's polarizing.
He’s the lead on Mr. And Mrs. Smith on Amazon that he’s currently promoting. Also, saying he was just a lead on Atlanta is disingenuous knowing he was also the creator of said show.
To which he will not be returning for the renewed season 2.

Wasn't the consensus reaction at the time he was trying to do something too intimate for Coachella headliner/playing to the cameras for the livestream, and that's what soured people at the polo field on that set? At least that's what I remember about the discourse.
Every headliner is “bad” at Coachella which is probably part of the reason why they’re having trouble getting people to do it these days.
for whatever reason people like to say “this person was so bad!!!!” instead of being honest and saying “i didn’t like it and would have rather watched john summit”

I sadly had to sell my ticket to Just Like Heaven this weekend so I hope a few of those bands are on the lineup. Historically doesn’t look like there’s much crossover between JLH and the following coachella tho.

In my own recollection, he was taking lengthy pauses between songs that prevented any kind of energy from building. He also opened with two then-unreleased tracks which can be a rough way to open a festival headlining set.
Part of the problem generally with these headliners IMO is just the scattered nature of pop music today. There aren't a lot of newer headliners out there who could play an 18 song set and 100,000 people will know at least half the songs, and a lot of them are lower energy acts that aren't going to wow a newcomer who's been on their feet listening to music until 11pm. Not entirely their fault.
Olivia Rodrigo is probably one of the best pop stars they could pick in terms of novelty and pull, despite small discography. But I think she has enough high energy music to do well. Dua doesn’t really have the pull everyone on the board thinks. Her last tour was fine.
There is a very small number of acts they could realistically book who I would actively want to see an entire set from, if any at all
I only saw W2, but I think Gambino was a case where there was a big improvement between the weeks. On week 1, he went and smoked weed in the crowd for a long time, and also talked about how out of the people watching him now, 1 of them would be dead within a week, which is not really what anyone wants to hear. Weekend 2 seemed to have a better energy, and went over pretty well with the crowd.

No Doubt definitely cleared that bar, and had much stronger crowd energy, and numbers, than any of the actual headliners. It was similar for Calvin Harris in '22, which was the biggest crowd I've ever seen at main stage.

I would personally rather catch a full Dua Lipa set than Olivia, but I agree Olivia is a bigger pull. Dua though I think has an older following with more disposable income.
Hey guys, I'm the person who leaked Dua and CAA postponing their shot for Coachella last year. Just wanted to refresh the rumor, since HDD basically confirmed everything I said, meaning Rob told the truth! Her album seems to be selling really well internationally despite singles not necessarily doing the best here in the US, so I think the interest from GV's side should still be there. I would say it's probably her spot to lose, but things could always change. Would love a Tame Impala RTTD into Dua spot.
On the out side, I would keep expectations about NewJeans low given the current tensions between their imprint label and their label's parent company. Fraud allegations and a lot of other accusations being thrown around, audits on both the company level and government level are about to occur, potential corporate restructuring at the imprint label, and Hybe (the parent) was leaked to have plans to potentially put them on hold for a year after their releases this summer. Very public feud, and very unfortunate.
As for my wants/hopes:
Headliners:
Friday - Dua
Saturday - Rihanna
Sunday - Fred Again...
Subheadliners:
Friday - NewJeans
Saturday - Tainy/Karol G
Sunday - LCD Soundsystem (Outdoor closer)
RTTD:
Friday - Tame Impala

All of my friends (Millennials) love Olivia.... our girl is a cross over riot grrrl revival princess and we stan - I think she'd tempt parents of Gen Alpha to bring their kids even - don't sleep.

Fred Again is boring af live. Tried to watch his set at iii points and couldn’t be bothered to stay for longer than 10 minutes because Despacio was right around the corner. They literally just had him headline with TBA (I’d rather a proper booking of either Skrill or Four tet first), and by next year he won’t be as hot of a book as he was last year. Maybe a subheadliner. But especially think Coachella likes to stand out the same way Bonnaroo is with booking his only US festival date this year.
Dua Lipa is boring live too. Famously so. And her last tour wasn’t selling out the way yall say a headliner NEEDS to be. She was a snooze fest at lollapalooza 22. If they book her than it’ll be one less conflict.

Headlining coachella doesn’t mean much these days
That's not true at all. Maybe pre-her getting bullied all over the internet for not knowing how to dance, but post-that she definitely shaped up and many of her performances have been raved about since. Her Primavera '22 performance was outstanding, had zero complaints besides the crowd, and definitely felt headliner worthy. You just seem angry for no reason, fist shaking at sky and all, because her entire year-long tour did, in fact, sell out completely at every single venue internationally lol

Do you just like to complain? He wasn't a planned headliner which doesn't exclude him from headlining again, many people are craving a full Fred performance, and he definitely isn't boring (what do you find not boring, I guess is the better question..). I would love for a full Fred set and a full Four Tet set, and if we get Tet I hope we get Ben too (at Quasar).

No karma to be had here. And somebbody tell Dua she is performing at ACL cause she has failed to mention it at all and just cares about chart position.

I take back what I said about Donald Glover, I just saw an ad on Hulu for his tour. I don't think I've ever seen a TV ad for a tour this is gonna be a bloodbath

Didn't see his roo set but that's how his set was at lollapalooza and I loved it, again it's bc I was front row it prob sucked for everyone not in front or on stream

Yes I love to complain, and trust my taste and experience. Fred’s sound didn’t translate to giant crowds so well when I saw him headline in 2023. And yes, 3 sets in 4 years is a little over saturated. That said, at least he’s a little more unique and interesting.
It’s so disappointing to see yall clamoring for a manufactured top40 radio pop princess. She’s famously bad live. Her new album is boring. Headliners like her are the living proof as to why Coachella is not cool anymore. She makes music for children.
Give me Missy Elliot/Timbaland and friends for a full Y2K send with Ciara, ginuwine, Nelly furtado, jay z whoever. That’s the shit coachella is known for and real superstar headliner set.
Missy is already touring with Timbo, Ciara, Busta Rhymes so that's likely not happening. BUT they really should book at least a couple artists from that 90s/00s R&B pool
I think Usher would honestly be a solid Friday HL pick. His shows are A LOT better than that Super Bowl performance I promise lol
Anyways, is Rihanna really expecting another child?.. Well, give me Adele at least. Is she turning 35 yet? We need another milestone age so she can put out a new album lol
