Let's jump to the other side of the globe... What J-Pop artists might be in contention for next year? While K-Pop seems to get the higher billing I've been much more consistently pleased by the J-pop they've booked over the past few years. Perfume, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, YOASOBI, and ATARASHII GAKKO! were all highlights of their respective years for me.
I keep figuring it’s gotta be Babymetal’s year eventually, they’re maybe the biggest Jpop adjacent crossover act that hasn’t played this festival yet.
If you want to quote me saying no one will be there, TikTok teens don’t care about Jack White, etc.: no. There will be 80,000 people at that set and I will be drunk and having a good time screaming along to “Steady, as she Goes”. Fuck you.

White Stripes would def be a draw cause they got sing alongs. But i guess theyre lumped into the same category as Oasis.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of me chugging as $35 Heineken while chanting the "Seven Nation Army" riff aloud.

Jack didn’t have a particularly big crowd in 2015, I’m not sure he’s a huge draw solo (perhaps colored by the fact that I don’t really have a lot of interest in seeing him solo again)…but the white stripes would kill.
ok, I thought my shitpost would be clearer, but it apparently is not so I will clarify: I think Jack White as a sub would be good, I do not care if he'd have a small crowd size because that simply does not concern me, you will catch me running over to the bar complaining about the lines and then grumbling when he does "Cannon" in the middle of his set.

Unfortunately, Coachella hasn't really booked any of the bigger J-Pop artists and have mostly gone for the middle tier and/or newer artists. So if that trend continues..
I'd say TOMOO should be a lock, very popular in Japan but pretty new and has a respectable cross over audience in the US
Mrs. Green Apple would be a great booking
Aimer would be amazing but she's a lot bigger than what Coachella has been booking. She'd deserve 2nd line placement.
Would be cool to get more J Rock bands out, bands like MASS OF THE FERMENTING DREGS have just recently had their first US tours (even though they've been around for awhile) that have been pretty successful (sold out shows almost everywhere), but a lot of those indie Japanese bands have trouble funding their tours and something like Coachella would be a good catalyst to get them out here. They did book X Japan (Biggest J music booking they've done, and they plopped them next to Beyonce in set time lol) so anything is possible
Someone like Utada is currently having a ridiculous Asian tour (and never really tours outside of Asia..) and is a top tier veteran, but it's less likely that Coach would ever book someone like them. Legacy deserves high billing, but their Coachella audience probably wouldn't match

Utada was at the 88rising showcase W1 in 2022 (the one that also had the 2NE1 reunion) and I’m guessing that’s as close as we get to her being here.

I remember leaving the Mojave after Turnstile and being able to see the screens on Main from there and I was like ".. wait, is that Utada??" and started sprinting over, but after a bit I was like "Nah.. there's no way, I probably assumed wrong from this distance" and decided to not make my way to Main because I was headed to the Sahara next.
Found out later that it WAS Utada and I was heart broken!
I even tried hard to get a ticket to one of their Japan shows this year, it was a lottery system and none of my bids hit =(
Personally won’t be doing one until September - we had some juicy tidbits last month ish but haven’t really had anything since. I will say I think the most interesting thing we haven’t heard yet is any word on any Dua Lipa NA tour dates yet.

At this point Dua might not announce any shows til after ACL. And even then she hasnt even acknowledged that she is even playing the festival?
