Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Regarding dubstep that can vary in terms of sound too, a Distinct Motive track which would almost always be labeled Dubstep is vastly different and more aligned with traditional sounding dubstep than an Excision “dubstep” track would. That particular dubstep sound is often labeled now as “deep dub” or just 140.
For sure. So much stuff is hybridized these days. And often there are kind of little things things that could indicate why a particular sub of house could be French House or Dutch House or whatever. I only wanted to post kind of the generalities for a multi-genre festival since that's what Bonnaroo is.
For sure, I usually try not to pay much attention to genre cause a lot of stuff can be difficult to categorize and it can lead to a deep rabbit hole.
This has to be a bit, ofc you go 4/4 on mentioning failed festivals. Too bad there's no Bonnaroo East coast.
Yeah, kidding on those defunct festivals, but they illustrate my point that finding anything similar to Roo is difficult, at best. Coachella is not an option due to the distance. I'd love to do Lollapalooza but finding anywhere close enough to stay = $$$$. I wish we could do something in Ohio, given that its a fairly populous state to start with, there could be plenty of venue options near major highways, and it could be a sub 8 hour drive for people as far away as Chicago, Wolverineland, PA, much of NY, Louisville, DC & Baltimore, etc.
I'd honestly consider an alternative to my beloved Bonnaroo but there's nothing comparable within a similar radius. We'd want a multi-day fest with camping and a diverse lineup. Last year's group seems happy enough with the lineup to go this year though, I guess. I'll have fun no matter what, so I'm in as long as I can find someone to keep my business running for a week, which is likely but not a sure thing.
This is the problem I’m having. For my tastes this is the worst lineup they’ve had and I’d totally go to a different camping festival with my Bonnaroo group if there was a similar alternative to attend but there’s really not another option we can do. I skipped 2022 because of the lineup (first one I’ve skipped since 2003 but after the two cancelled years I didn’t get presale in 2022 and couldn’t justify a ticket on that lineup) while most of my usual group went and then I went back last year because I loved the lineup. None of us are particularly excited by this lineup but the majority of my group will probably be there just because it’s the only option and hey always get presale and a few of us will probably just settle for going to a couple local fests and hope for next year to be better.

gov ball lineup that leaked is booty cheeks: Killers, SZA, Post Malone, Peso Pluma, 21 Savage, Rauw Alejandro, Dominik Fike, Carly Rae, Renee Rapp as the top billed acts
I hear a lot of edm labels being thrown around and I don’t know what they mean. Can someone explain in terms a non-edm person can understand what the broad categories are and who all from the lineup fits into each one? All I know is that I really like Deadmau5 and I don’t like the dial-up-modem sounding stuff.
I love this video:
But if you don't want to watch something that long, think of it like a Rainbow, where the genres blur together at the edges. Mostly the distinction between genres is percussion & tempo based. For instance you can have a house song that is really simple and dark without much melody, and you can also have a house song that is super melody heavy and happy. They're both house because of the tempo and the specific percussion (4 kick drums per measure with a snare hit on every other beat). You only need like 20 seconds of each of these vids:
Techno: Minimal, untz untz untz
House: Often more melodic, boots n cats
Trance: Often soaring and melodic (but not all subgenres). Fast and energetic
Drum & Bass (DnB): Fast & busy percussion wise. Can be very melodic and smooth (liquid dnb) but isn't always
Hardstyle: Hardstyle sucks you can disregard
Bass/Dub:
Heavy percussion, slower tempo
Trap:
A lot of similarities to bass/dub in tempo but with flatter hip hop snares and often time a lot of vocals
Big Room is another one that probably deserves a spot. Think DJ Snake. It's kind of had it's moment though.
This is exactly what I needed, thanks. Tried looking at some of those genre explainer videos but they get so granular with the sub-genres that it’s hard to wrap my head around. Based on this I’m definitely more of a house/techno/trance person. Which makes sense because I also like that 90s style fatboy slim/real mccoy/night at the roxbury sounding stuff. And I had a shitload of fun at sofi tukker last year. Who would be some good ones to check out this year?

Honestly aside from Post and The Killers that's actually a great linup

No prob! Sofit Tukker rocks, my 3rd fav show from last year. Recs for '24:
Fisher: "King of Tech House" Chris Lake ghost produces for this guy so his tracks are really good, if a bit simple. It'll be a fun bangers set. Don't go looking for immense artistic integrity though.
It's Murph: Chill melodic dancey stuff. I'll be there if there's nothing conflicting.
Oliver Heldens: A pretty big deal booking honestly, your classic fest/future house (melodic, it'll be fun)
Seven Lions: Typically Melodic Bass, he has side projects that play with trance, and even plays trance at his 7 Lions sets sometimes. Worth swinging by.
Dr. Fresch: Heavy mid tempo house. Suuuuper fun set.
Shy FX: DnB but literally gonna be so fun
Diplo: Shitty guy but plays what's popular which is tech house at the moment, mostly
Knock2: Huge up and comer in house. Bangers.
Whyte Fang: Allison Wonderland does mostly trap - this is her eclectic side project. A bit underwhelming on the coach stream but I'll probably be checking it out.
Kasablanca: Prog house and melodic techno - a really exciting booking for Roo imo
Two Friends: "Cringey" as far as Electronic goes but if you like edm covers of pop songs you you'll get 90 minutes of that
Galantis: Pretty basic fest house but a fun colorful set
Four Tet: A very notable booking, even for people who don't like edm. Contemplative and artistic dance set, mostly house.
TSHA: Don't know a lot about her but people have good things to say

FISHER and Oliver Heldens are a great start for Thurs dance parties

Wish we got SZA. I live in Brooklyn so maybe I’ll try to go on her day.
He is a great singer. Sadly he didn’t do anything like this at his 2018 set- but it was still very fun. It would be cool if he’d bust out a couple songs that really showcase his voice and/or with live instrumentation this time around though.
i'm hoping he does a covers set like that recent concert he did, but i know people want the hits. i think i'm in the minority where although the 2018 set was fun, it felt short - like only 30s clips of each song- so i could never get into it.
He played an outdoor concert at my alma mater a few years ago and I had an incredible time. He did a lot of classic T-Pain songs, a lot of T-Pain adjacent songs like Akon, and then a bunch of random off the wall covers that really got the crowd going (one I remember specifically was Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now). Dude knows his audience and knows how to put on a fun show. I’m confident that his setlist for this will be great.

ok i don't know where else to post this, but i just got an email announcing a show with an act called LSD Clownsystem. Apparently they are "America's premier clown-themed LCD Soundsystem cover band".
Two questions:
1. have y'all ever heard of LSD Clownsystem before 2. how hard would you rage an LSD Clownsystem set at bonnaroo

I can’t believe this, but I actually have heard of LSD Clownsystem. One of their members posted to the LCD Reddit a few weeks ago. Apparently they all dress as clowns and redo all the LCD lyrics to be clown related. And for question #2: I’D GO CRAZY
Will be curious what the new Cage music sounds like after the issues with Matt, though right now I don't have faith it'll be anything great. It feels like they had lightning in a bottle with Melophobia, which is still one of my favorite albums tbh. Had a distinct, cohesive sound and surprisingly off-kilter and kind of psychedelic at times. Highly recommend these two songs in particular, which have a decent chance of being played:
