I recently took on a bucket of my brother’s old lego sets (that still had instructions) and have been slowly building each set and cataloguing missing or broken pieces.
I’m starting to run into more missing pieces as I complete more of these old sets and pieces start to dwindle. I’ve been writing down all the missing pieces so eventually I’ll have to sit down and make and order online for the pieces they still make.
Also, I hate going to MOA but I may have to since that place has the LEGO Store (I remember it as Legoland) with a pick a brick wall.

Completed a couple more old sets: I’m starting to run into more missing pieces as I complete more of these old sets and pieces start to dwindle. I’ve been writing down all the missing pieces so eventually I’ll have to sit down and make and order online for the pieces they still make.

Pick a brick wall is clutch. I don’t live near a LEGO store now but when I did you could grab a cup and fill it for a fixed amount. Hopefully that’s still the case.
If worst comes to worst, I’ll use a third party brick just to complete it. There’s a company called WeBrick that I use to do backsides of a Modular that doesn’t have a forth wall. I figure you can’t see it and I’ll be damned if I’m giving Lego more money. I haven’t run into anything that doesn’t fit right and the colors are spot on.

Yeah, Mall Of America Lego has 188 options on their Pick-A-Brick Wall. I believe they have two cup sizes. The larger of the two looks to be about like a 24oz convenience store cup.
Part of my goal on building these old sets is to “re-complete” them. On 6066, you can see I had to use a blue 4x4 plate to complete the build, but I’ve catalogued that I need to purchase that piece in gray (I’m pretty sure I have that piece but I already “assigned” it to a larger old set).
Now that I’ve gotten thru the 2 pirate ships, I have 6276 (Eldorado Fortress), and 6085 (Black Monarch’s Castle) remaining on the larger of the old sets.

I’ve got a few projects to finish before I can dig in. Currently converting everything to MILS plates (those fancy interlocking base plates) and it’s taking FOREVER to finish but I’m almost there. Then I can start setting up the city. I figure it would be better to do upfront than in the middle and boy was I right. Really dig that mint green and salmon color combo.
Also looking for any recommendations if people have farms. I have a few sets but mostly vehicles and crops.
Top floor is the suite. It’s the largest of 3 rooms with a restroom and a larger bedroom. That said, it’s a tight space. Especially the bathroom. Never mind I hate the idea of people watching you take a poo.
The second floor has two cramped rooms.
Bottom floor is pretty ornate and really fun tile work. Love the clock and front desk. To the side is an art gallery that’s super not comfortable. Probably should have been 6 to 8 studs wider, imo.
In the back is the dumpster with a moldy croissant from the Parisian restaurant modular back in the day. This set is full of Easter eggs from sets past.
I’d give it a B+. It’s a fun build but there were times the instructions didn’t make a ton of sense. If you hate small pieces this isn’t the set for you as it’s full of them.
It’s lovely to look at, I will give it that. Again, those colors are incredible. Paired with the light nougat and dark chocolate brown colors for the flair, it feels real swanky.
Currently mulling over my next one. I got a lead on Assembly Square set that’s less than the retail but supposedly an insane build. Then also looking at the 1027 Bookshop set. I’ll probably go bigger but it will cause problems with my city plan as I’ll have to add more parks.

Do you ever look on Facebook marketplace? Here in the twin cities, I see a lot of bulk lego and sets getting sold on the regular.
I’ve got so many house projects going right now and I started a new job 3 months ago so I haven’t dedicated anything in my monthly budget yet to lego. Maybe by this summer. I want that damn Rivendell set haha.

I want that Rivendell set too. With the light set. But I have no where to put it. Things huge.

I’ve bought bulk a few times but always afraid to buy sets from people. I’m sure it’s fine but I’m at that stage where I’m just getting modulars and building MOC.
Some good prices can be found there though. If you’re short on cash, it might be the best place to look. As you know by now, hit your family up. I’ve been gifted tons of parts in my lifetime and it’s still growing. It’s amazing that people hang on to those as long as they do after their kids have moved on to other interests.
