Age of Consent over Temptation?
Yes. It just does something for me. A lot of these are tied into memories and emotion, and Age of Consent was a regular staple at these dance parties I used to attend and always a high point. Evolved into a favorite of mine and the wife's (the song we walked out to at our wedding reception). Saw them play it together in Barcelona last year. I started by thinking through what would bring me the most joy when trapped on this desert island and bring up the best memories and that was the first song that came to mind.

that's lovely. and i adore Age of Consent, Temptation just goes back longer for me. i actually first heard it in Trainspotting, when Diane is singing the "oh you've green eyes, oh you've got blue eyes, oh you've got grey eyes". saw them for the first time in New Orleans last year and managed to not look at the setlist before. was delighted when they closed the set with it. They played Blue Monday right before, and I assumed this is their biggest song, this is what they close with, then they go into Temptation and i was first row balcony jumping up and down screaming the lyrics.

That's awesome. I do love Temptation too. We got Blue Monday>Temptation>Love Will Tear Us Apart at PS, and it was really special for us as well

1. Robert Palmer - Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley: possibly the best song of all time. the "just wasn't (just wasn't) just wasn't what ya THinKihayayyahayayah" is so fucking awesome.
2. Misfits - Hybrid Moments: the perfect melodic punk song. no matter how much i listen i can't get tired of it.
3. New Order - Temptation: see post above.
4. The Cure - Inbetween Days: the first 49 seconds or so is everything i love about post-punk.
5. Bryan Adams - Summer of '69: the perfect reminiscing about your youth song.
6. Pavement - Silence Kid: everything good about 90s alt/indie. sloppy, off-tempo, a broken train idling down the track about to fall off at any moment but it never does. incredible lackluster vocal performance from Malkmus. the sound of a band not trying at all because they know they are hot shit. "LETS TALK ABOUT LEAVIN"
7. Phish - Colonel Forbin's Ascent: my favorite Phish song. the "and he climbed so slowly, he climbed soooo slowly A hey EY ey EYYYYYYYYYYYY" is the best. also gives you the nuts and bolts of the Gamehenge narrative in one song. wilson, the lizards, the helping friendly book, etc.
8. a-ha - Take On Me: the perfect 80s synthpop song. and makes me think of the video which is one of the coolest of all time.
9. George Jones - The Race Is On: used to go to this bar/laundromat on the outskirts of Auburn when i was in college, must have seen Rollin' in the Hay cover this song a million times. not david allen coe but to me it's the perfect country western song.
10. Grateful Dead - The Race Is On: same as above but with Bob Weir singin.
11. The Smiths - Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want: morrissey may be a doofus but the honesty and shamelessness of his lyrics always gets me, and the lyrics to this song are kind of the like mission statement of The Smiths.
12. Ween - Boys Club: in a catalog of pop masterpieces with highly inappropriate lyrics, this ode to men having sex with men on the down low wins the #1 earworm award. listen at your own risk, you'll be singing "BOYS CLUB" randomly forever afterwards.
13. Beach Bunny - Deadweight: goddamn perfect power pop song that hasn't left my regular rotation since i heard it. incredible vocal performance from Lili Trifilio. a theme in this list is singers singin slightly off key with as much power and earnestness as they can muster, something about that really gets me emotional.
14. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?: objectively the best Smiths song. again with the honest shameless lyrics "there's a club if you'd like to go / you might meet somebody who really loves you / but you go and you stand on your own / and you leave on your own / and you go home and you cry and you want to die" who the fuck writes those lyrics? amazing.
15. Sturgill Simpson - Turtles all the Way Down: hard to choose a best Sturgill song, but here you have his absolutely beautiful perfect country voice, stunning lyrics, about the inherent mystery of life and the universe, but as we all intuitively know the answer all comes back to love.
16. The Smiths - Ask: another perfect pop song. "so if there's something you'd like to try / if there's something you'd like to try / ask me i won't say no how could i?"
17. Nirvana - Breed: the most relistenable Nirvana song. stunning performances from the whole band but what ties this whole song together is the Novoselic bassline which just fuckin grooves so hard.
18. Metallica - Battery (Live): the best Metallica song. i particularly love this version because it captures the power of live Metallica. I also love how you can hear the pyrotechnics go off at the beginning and the crowd roaring after.
19. Grateful Dead - Brokedown Palace: beautiful song that makes me think of the friends and family and friends who were like family i've lost along the way. when john mayer had been with Dead and Company for about a year, i was listening to an interview. he joined the band not knowing a ton about the Grateful Dead's music or their history, which rubbed a lot of fans the wrong way. But in this interview he's talking about how they were playing this song live, and he looks down at the front row and there are these two grown men holding each other just weeping, and he realized these guys had lost people, and the weight of the whole scene and the responsibility on his shoulders all came together. i love that story.
20. Phish - Tweezer Reprise: my actual favorite phish song lol. i love this version in particular from 10/30/2010. you can read the show notes but basically they played/teased a bunch of Zeppelin in this show, and at the end of this tweeprise Trey goes into the Whole Lotta Love riff, and Fishman drums right into it. it's just a little microcosm of how exciting phish can be when they are silly and fun. and tweeprise is without a doubt my favorite song to hear live, nothing gets me more pumped.
I love "Slow Show". Also weird I didn't include any VW at all on mine. I'm coming off several months of almost daily VW listening so I'm probably just a bit tired of them, but I bet I'd regret not including any once I was on the island.
MMJ - Steam Engine. "The fact that my heart's beating, is all the proof you need." love song that always reminds me of my wife. WSMFP - Ain't Life Grand. "in my mind I was a child, and it felt good." party song that makes me happy. simple things make life good. The Flaming Lips - Feeling yourself disintegrate. I dunno if there's a more beautiful song about loss. by the time the guitar solo starts in the last minute or so i'm already ready to float away. Caribou - Can't Do Without You. This song is so repetitive but by the time it ends I'm like wait, it's over already? Just really great job building on a motif; those synth pads are so thick and the swirls of sound and sliding EQ filters. just really great sound design. LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends - talk about just building on a motif. this songs plays to my nostalgia, and that creeping sense of reluctant aging and nascent existential dread. but still comforting? this song is just so damn good. Grateful Dead - Ripple. "There is a road, no simple highway; Between the dawn and the dark of night; And if you go, no one may follow; That path is for your steps alone" a song that simultaneously makes me happy and nearly tear up. every time. no other song can do that. Otis Redding - (sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay - I like everything about this song. There's not another voice like Otis Redding's, and even though this doesn't have any sections where he flexes that powerful baritone, the restrained delivery here is actually what makes it so compelling to me - that wistful feeling watching the ships come in and watching em go away again. Grateful Dead - Friend of the Devil - used to sing this to my kids to put them to sleep. Radiohead - The National Anthem - the drums and bass are a solid foundation under pure chaos. it relents for a minute before throwing you back into the churn and adding a french horn solo on top. Carly Rae Jepsen - Run Away with Me - "Over the Weekend, we can turn the world to gold." Maybe a perfect pop song. That sax hook. The HUGE reberb on those snare hits. a better use of 'Hey!" than any of the stomp and holler kids. Double tracked vocals so she harmonizes with herself. The energy coming out of the bridge and her vocal shift to a higher register. Just stellar songwriting. Seeing her at bonnaroo this year was a top 5 bonnaroo moment this year. Pure joy. Phish - Piper. My daughter is named Piper. I'm a sucker for songs that start on theme and just build into something huge and magnificent. I would have loved a live version that really spreads it all out but I only have a 74 minute CD-r. Wilco - Impossible Germany. I don't really know what this song is about, lyrically. But Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy's guitar interplay is what this song is really about anyway - it flirts with joy and melancholy and excitement. just a really sublime guitar section. this album came out when my wife and i were in the early stages of dating for the second time and we listened to it alot together, so I have a great memory of lying in bed in the spring, with my second story window open and the morning sung just barely filtering through the trees and listening to this album while drinking coffee. Talking Heads - Slippery People. From Stop Making sense. Slinky funk and so much percussion. Head and shoulders above the arrangement on Speaking in Tongues. Full on dance party and Talking Heads at their absolute best. And the LYrics are pretty great too. The Cure - Just Like Heaven - This is the perfect pop song.
