i was born in Mississippi! i only lived there a year though so i don't remember anything.
approximately 98% of my Mississippi memories are seeing some band or standup at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, the Hard Rock, or the Beau Rivage, or driving across it to get to New Orleans.
there is a gas station in Diamondhead, MS that is nice that we always stop at. it used to be called the "Git R Done" but Larry the Cable Guy sued them so now it's called "Diamondhead Texaco and Vape Shop".
I was driving through Mississippi yesterday and was getting endless "speed check ahead" warnings on the map program. The state DOT and troopers were apparently running some kind of operation targeting trucks. I saw 7 or 8 of them pulled over driving the 76 miles across it on I-10. Mississippi isn't all bad. Almost everyone I know from there is at least pretty cool. They are the cradle of Delta Blues and great steel guitar players. There's a list of great musicians and entertainers different people on here probably like. Robert Johnson, Jimmy Buffett, B.B. King, Hayley Williams, Zoogma, Cassandra Wilson, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, etc. There's a lot of ignorance and poverty as would be expected in a deep south state. The Gulf Coast is pretty cool though you have to go to the barrier islands to find better water since the Mississippi River pretty much just drains off that way. They have decent casinos in Biloxi. Jackson is a literary haven. Our own Dr. Browell hails from coastal Jackson County. So that's a good thing going for it. People can cook there, and the soul food can be delicious and comforting. Smothered greens, fried chicken, pork chops, candied yams, etc. It's not that it's healthy, it just tastes good.
Speaking of microwaves, not sure if I've told this story on Inforoo before..
When I was on my way to Bonnaroo 2015, I stopped at a Motel 6 in Jackson, MS because it was about halfway from Houston. I went to a Target and got some beer and a microwave burrito. I was ready to watch the NBA Finals game that started right around when I got there. Open the microwave and there's a full Raising Canes meal that had been in there for who knows how long.

The shittiest midwestern states (Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska) are worse than the shittiest southern states because they have all of the bad parts of the south (racism, xenophobia, large swaths of impoverished and underserved areas) without any of the natural beauty, delicious food, or mild weather

Indianapolis and all cities named Jacksonville across the country are like the purgatories from Wristcutters: A Love Story where nobody is allowed to feel hope or happiness

I agree with this sentiment so I’m on #16. Mississippi is pretty bad but it’s still got the gulf coast and SEC football

Also see above the gas station I was talking about that is pretty nice, the "Diamondhead Texaco and Vape Shop". There is a Dairy Queen nearby there as well.
