Yes, it's politically a disaster, but it is one of the most stunningly beautiful states, breathtaking in ways you can't really imagine until you get there. Sioux Falls is one of the coolest cities I've ever visited. The geology of the western portion of the state feels otherworldly. The Standing Rock Sioux are some of the most inspiring environmental activists in this country. Wall Drug is insane.
And it's one of the few states where you can see bison roaming freely, like I did in 2017 when I visited.
South Dakota is comfortably better than 12 states we've had already. I'm putting it at 4th, and you should too.
Not sure how people seem to generally like South Dakota but seemed to not like Iowa.
I haven't been to either, but from what I gather, the Dakotas do have more natural beauty than Iowa, but I just don't have any intentions of going out of my way to visit any of them.
Google search for cultural and musical influences that originated or spent time there. I knew two of them - David Soul (Hutch from Starsky & Hutch) and Chad Kroeger who I'm not going to google but think might be the singer from Nicklesback. Automatic bottom 1 (down-arrow says he only spent part of his early childhood days there). Still that's an automatic bottom 1. Maybe other people know some of the other artists and bands, but I don't.
What about actors (besides Soul)? Cheryl Ladd (who I think became a psycho republican), Mary Hart, Gary Owens, Pat O'Brien are the ones I know. Doesn't move the needle.
Artists (Painters)? I don't know any of them.
Food contributions besides cattle, potatoes and corn? People eat dishes like Indian Fry Bread, chislic (skewered cubes of red meat such as mutton, lamb or game), tiger meat (raw ground beef with onion, salt and pepper often served with rye bread or dipped with crackers), walleye, buffalo burgers, lefse (Norwegian Potato crepes), mocha cakes and rhubarb.
This doesn't elevate the state for me. I went 16 but 15 is okay too.

pros about SD: -my family is from and most live there -Lake Andes wildlife area and that SE part of the state is actually really pretty -the Chamberlain, SD rest stop has an amazing statue- www.travelsouthdakota.com/trip-ideas/story/dignity-earth-sky (actually probably one of the most beautiful rest stops i've ever been to, incredible at sunset) -Tom Brokaw and Adam Vinateri are from where most of my family is from- which is a quintessential American Main Street type of town to this day -January Jones is from Sioux Falls (which, i disagree with Cokes on SF being a cool city. it has some cool elements like the falls downtown but the rest is regular American Western City Urban Sprawl with very Wide Bad Use of Space. but people in SD love their space!!) -Black Hills are actually very pretty (but just keep driving- WY, MT are way better in scenery) -lots of fun kitschy road stops like the Corn Palace, Wall Drug, Bedrock City in Custer -Chislic!!
all that being said- i still would not go above 15. the politics SUCK (Kristi Noem can suck a fart), the people are somewhat closed off (think Minnesota/Iowa Nice- people are nice and friendly but that's it- i just feel like they're judgmental. as a queer who spends a lot of time there, it ain't fun), and there is quite a bit of racism toward the native population. neighboring state Minnesota is miles ahead of SD.
Simply still can't get over Oregon 9th when politics are ostensibly such an important factor.
tbf, politics outside of the main metro areas are pretty batshit. but overall- all Mail-In voting!!, liberal pioneers, LGBTQ+ friendly, amazing geography and nature, mountains, gorgeous coastline, Columbia River Gorge, water falls, old growth forest, wine, beer, potatoes, high desert, incredible food scene, food trucks!...Oregon being 9th is just a travesty lmao
I haven’t ever been close to there but it looks kind of scary. It’s like a cross between Moscow and overalls. Maybe I’m wrong and it’s full of cool shit. Except like Bass Pro Shops where they have multiple hotels close by I’m probably not looking to check that out. I almost wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt so I wasted my time and algorithms and looked at the calendar. Bull riding. Shooting Sports Foundation Banquet, low grade Professional Wrestling, I don’t want to be nearby to any of that. Did Grateful Dead or Phish play there that many times for it to be credible?
