Vegan threads always seem to bring out the fundamentalists on both sides. Live and let live, mang!
Thread focus:
I don't remember seeing any vegan 'official' vendors the past few years. Several vegetarian options, but most had cheese. I bet you could ask one of them to make it vegan. Some of the vendors seemed like they would be cool to special requests. It never hurts to ask!
Now concerning lot food, I heard many a vegan option, but you never know the cleanliness of lot vendors. Make sure the person handling money isn't prepping food, and look for hand sanitizer. The best one's keep it clean AND tasty.
"Professor Allen stressed that although the study (which was partially supported by the National Cattleman's Beef Association) was conducted in a poor African community that was malnourished, its message was highly relevant to people in developed countries." LOL...sure...you can find someone saying...anything...about pretty much anything.....but this article is obviously biased. Anywho.....whether it's healthy or not...the fact is..millions of animals are being slaughtered yearly. I'm sure this doesn't bother most of you...considering we are as humans..meat eaters. I do not think good ol' mom nature was thinking of mass murder as being one of the tactics for finding this meat. Not to mention...imagine any animal living life in a cage...never seeing the sky until it's on it's way to the slaughter house. This happens folks....it's not just all scare tactics. Anyway..it's sad...and I'm not paying money to support the meat industry. My own personal (maybe ineffective) boycott. Sessions...don't fret...you're child will be healthy....unless, of course, you let the National Cattleman's Beef Association chart your child's growth.
"Man and his deed are two distinct things...a good deed should call forth approbation a a wicked deed disapprobation, the doer of the deed, whether good or wicked, always deserves respect or pity as the case may be. 'Hate the sin and not the sinner' is a precept which, though easy enough to understand, is rarely practicsed (sic), and that is why the poison of hatred spreads in the world." -Ghandi
There are organic, free-range meat options now for those concerned with mass farming practices. I belong to a meat co-op and have met the person who raises them in a kind environment (as kind as being raised for food can get, at least).
Hope I didn't freak too many people out about the dirty hands thing, but I used to vend food back in the early 90's at Dead shows and I saw some things that would curl your stomach. A little caution in picking your lot vendor can keep the weekend rolling the right way.
Yea...I've eaten deer and eggs I got from an animal friendly farmer. I'm not against eating meat...Meat is good....I just don't like the cruelty involved. I don't see how you can....be cautious when picking a vendor. What do you do? Ask them to hold out their hands to make sure they are clean? I will be on the look out while they are preparing food...especially with the heat factor...it could get pretty funky.

So of course that study is biased!! They want people to eat meat to make MONEY.
And on top of that: "The 544 children studied had been raised on diets chiefly consisting of starchy, low-nutrition corn and bean staples lacking these micronutrients." That is why these kids were malnourished.. nothing to do with lack of meat!
Besides, I never believe anything I read in the media, because media forms like radio, tv, newspapers are owned by large corporations who also own agricultural farms.. Want some education? Read this: www.goveg.com www.factoryfarm.org www.vegan.com
Not some article by some twit whose completely biased by the department she's writing about!!
check out this site for some info backed by nutritionists, the WHO and medical practitioners. it is very detailed and VERY informative regarding the health aspects of vegitarianism/veganism

Yes, but in that environment it is often times difficult for them to have access to properly nutritious staples. For them, some meat (not nearly the amount we Americans eat on average, mind you) in their diet could go a long way to stop human beings from dying and suffering. It's an easier fix in the short term to augment their diet w/ meat than to fix large-scale supply and staple nutrition issues.
And look at Thom Yorke........He looks really healthy ;D
My wife said a women at her work is a vegetarian and her Dr. said she had to eat meat during her pregnancy.
My wife is a vegetarian and I am around 50% of one.... She never eats tofu or any of that fake processed stuff. We make lots of different meals. I think you really have to watch what you eat.
I hope there are some good veggie wraps there myself.... But I also want a burger and some ice cream....
my doctor told me the cure for depression was to pop some prozac ??? doctors are not trained in preventive medicine, they are not taught how to prevent or cure diseases, they are strictly taught to diagnose, prescribe medicine, and perform operations. our naturopathic doctor told my wife that it can actually be much safer not to eat meat while pregnant, but only if you are still getting the required 60 grams of protien from other sources. most americans are eating upwards of 100-200 grams which can actually be quite bad for the baby.
so it really all comes down to eating a proper balance of essential nutrients whether from soy, legumes or from ORGANIC animal protiens, as the non organic factory farmed sources of animal protien are PROVEN to be high in BGH (bovine growth hormone), antibiotics, somatic cells (pus), and numerous other toxins (many of which lead to cancer and heart disease, the two big killers in our neck of the woods)
so the only way that not eating meat is a problem during pregnancy is if you are completely irresponsible and are not eating properly

If they look dirty, their hands are probably dirty. I prefer to see it assembled in front of me. The people slinging pre-made "veggie burritos" or anything else out of a cooler are the ones I steer clear of usually (no offense to anyone who does this and keeps it clean).
If you see a bottle of hand sanitizer, you are usually golden.
Thom yorke looks perfectly healthy to me. And as far as the whole "Eating meat protein makes you more intelligent" theory goes......Thom is a genius. You should google Gandhi and Einstein and some other well known very intelligent people...perhaps you'll find out that most are/were vegetarian!
And...I exalt you papageorgio! I thought those comments were very disrespectful...especially toward a lady...especially towards a pregnant lady. Glad you had something....respectful to say!
Haha - and right on cue - the google ad at the top of the page says: Meat Causes Cancer There's spin on both sides - just gotta take it all in and decide for yourself. Personally I'd rather stock up on energy foods like granola bars, clif bars, than rely on vendors.

jason, please come back, i just have to know. your friends doctor told her explicitly that her miscarage was caused by a vegan diet, or poor nutrition?
I love how a simple question of "is vegan food available" turns into a war. Welcome to the 2000s, where we disrespect others for their views via the internet.
But yes, there is vegan food available at Roo. I saw many non-official vendors selling vegan pizza and many many other things. As for dirty hands, inside Centeroo most of the time you see them making the food (mostly wearing gloves and changing them often - as far as I saw). I just can't wait to get my hands on those curly fries near the entrance. My best friend that is vegan is going. She's bringing two boxes of clemintines and loads of hummus and pita bread.

The Centeroo vendors really do pretty much have to adhere to all the state health standards re: handwashing and all that; those folks are on site. I'd never worry about anything I'd eat there unless I saw something nasty at that stand.
