The ground is hard. It is difficult in some ares to get them in the ground far enough to feel safe. We used them for two years, but last year we could not get them into the dirt without feeling like they were going to fall over or snap if we speared them any harder at the dirt.
Last year we drove and brought a small sledge hammer. The hammer was used by everyone around us to put in tent stakes, etc. We also included in the car a 12" steel rod that was PERFECT for knocking a hole in the ground for the torches to fit into. Was much easier than using a shovel and then filling in. Torches seemed to work better if you were camped near a road or in tent only. Torches deep in the pods where you are surrounded by others and vehicles can be a bit risky.
