i know this sounds weird, but would bonnaroo allow you to bring in a generator?, my friend was saying he wanted to bring his generator in and a AC window unit to put in his tent during the day
in 04 we were camped by people with generators. but they have an rv section now and that was an rv. but it hink you are allowed to have small quiet ones. i bought an extended van with the back seat bed thing and i am thinking about putting a small rv air conditioner in it and running a generator. i go to alot of fests and am sick of tenting it in the heat and the cold. they make some quiet ones. and ones that run on propane to avoid messes/danger. it seems like i remember seeing a few in the campgrounds last year. most festivals allow it as long as it isnt really loud. most of the smaller ones for camping dont make much noise and can be covered up by a cd player at medium volume.

We have rented a generator the last 3 years to run the ac in a pop-up camper rental. The official rules has size limits on the generators, but the official rules also state no fireworks and no drugs. No one ever checked the size or type of ours. You just have to be aware of the people around you because they are loud and smelly. If you had it running all the time your neighbors may gank your spark plug!!! We just ran ours during the day to cool off and rest up when the heat was at it's peak. Sometimes we ran it early evening but just to cool the camper down not for extended periods of time.
Is your friend plan on being in the tent during the day?
What size generator does he have? You will need a generator bigger then 2000 watts to start a window unit. I would also think you will need nore then 7,000 btu's in a tent to make a dent on the heat load produced by the sun.
Generator on propane? I know they make some larger units (>5000 watts) for home backup use that run on natural gas and propane but I can't say I have ever seen a portable generator run on propane.
To run a A/C unit in a camper (13,500 - 15,000 BTU's) you will need a 3000 watt generator.
I also know it stated that there were no "quite" times so you could run the Gen "as needed" But agree with Knox, you may still want to be courteous so that you can use it all weekend if necessary.
"Chicago is known as the Windy City, and Montana is called the Big Sky State, so I think that we should somehow combine the two to create the ultimate kite-flying experience. "-Mitch Hedberg
heres the link to the generators i was looking at. they make smaller camp ones and bigger rv ones. i think all of their generators have inverters. which is needed if you want to use sensitive electronics like tvs, computers, etc... and they have the propane option which is a huge plus for me

if you don't want to deal with a standard air conditioner take a look at this "gizmo"....I have no idea how well they work but seems a lot easier then lugging your wall-unit to roo
thanks for all the info, my friend is the one wanting to bring it in, i don't really care about it but he was talkin about makin a large canopy tent area with the generator running an AC
Nice find on the Onan generators.. Some of the problems I see with them is that they are "built in " to the van or RV that you have and that would require fire and sound proofing and some kind of compartment to be made. Another, LP tank I think again some kind of permanent tank would be requires not just simply a 20lb BBQ container.
The 2800 watt Onan uses .6 GPH at full load, a 20 lb LP conatiner holds 4.7 gal. that would be almost 8 hours of run time on a 20 lb container at full load. Last year my A/C ran flat out during the day...and that is in a insulated camper..
I don't think we used more then 10 gallons of gas for our generator last year for the weekend. We were there at noonish on Thursday. I only started and ran the AC during the late morning, when we stoped back to have a late lunch and while taking showers before bed.
The fan above the cooler thing is a waste of money...we have talked about that here before.
Your friend should have time to try this setup before the June date..good luck..
PLEASE if you are going to install or use a generator anywher in/near/around your tent OR rv be sure that there is a working CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) DETECTOR at ground level near your sleeping area. CARBON MONOXIDE KILLS!!
well it went from generator and window unit, to camping in the woods, to tent only and reveling in the heat, one thing nice about being from the southeast, you're used to hot, humid weather
PLEASE if you are going to install or use a generator anywher in/near/around your tent OR rv be sure that there is a working CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) DETECTOR at ground level near your sleeping area. CARBON MONOXIDE KILLS!!
I am addicted to cool(ish) sleeping conditions. This looks like a cheaper, quieter and easily more workable choice for me and my tent! I am going to set up an EZ up over the tent for extra shade.

Two years ago I had a guy wake me up with his generator everymorning around 8AM. He was vending breakfast burritos or something of that nature. I didn't mind because it got me up and going and I did my duty (doody) in a nice clean port-o-pottie.
