I've heard some talk about people having their coolers stolen or heard of others that have had their coolers stolen. I've never attended Roo, but it seems that it would be a good idea to put your coolers in your tent and lock your tent. Locking it in the car is hot and would cause your ice to melt quicker, but what if you got a lock for your tent and kept coolers in there. It seems that a tent would be cooler than the car.
I'd put it in the tent but locking it may just make someone REALLY curious as to what's inside, which could equal a slashed open tent
I don't think someone is going to slash open a tent because of mere curiosity
"someone had a good suggestion about using a bike lock to connect it to a couple chairs or a part of your car, would be a real pain to take it that way"
couldn't a theif just walk up and grab a bunch of booze/ food. that seems really easy
Due to either state of mind an/or pure exhaustion our colers have always sat right outside our tent or in the, except for the backup coolers whitch were in the car. Point is we have always had coolers just sitting out......never had them messed with. Either we are extra lucky or cooler theft is rare.
(Given the choice I would rather someone take a cooler than cut my tent to get to it or break my lock or smash a window)
I think the not locking the tent thing is similar to not locking a convertible. If they want in (and locking a tent would indicate, at least to me, that something worthwhile is stored inside), they will just slash the top (or tent wall) and then your stuff is gone and your top is cut too...
If you get a 5-day cooler, ice isn't an issue - even if it's in your trunk. I stored mine in the covered bed of my truck and still had ice Monday morning for the last two years. Out of sight, out of mind.
i always leave my coolers out at fests. well i put one in the tent to keep it from flying away if its windy. but other then that we just set them under our shade structure. ive heard people get into our coolers and take a beer or water as they hike through the tent areas. its not too cool.. but its not that big of a deal either. ive never ad more then a couple of beers or waters taken in that manner. and we usually have cd players, cds, tapestries, glass accessories, stuff to put in said glass, etc... sitting out and its always been there when we get back or wake up.
at the vibes someone stole from my friends tent. but all they took was her pregnancy pills. and at roo last year some friends came back from phil and friends to find that their rv and 2o some other rvs around them had been broken into. they took all their clothes, cds, the tv and microwave. pretty much everything.

We didn't have a problem with ours, and it was out all weekend. Though, I didnt see the guy I went with very much, and I wasn't there much, so for all I know, he spent a lot of the weekend at the camp.
I'd say it's not too likely. They are going to steal the ones that are easy to steal. Like I said in the other thread, lock it to your chairs. If you really want, get a cooler that has a lock, though I think its unnecessary.
I leave all the coolers out for three years now never had no problem. Get to know your neighbors and theyll watch out for your sh!t when you are not there.
if i had a super nice cooler id keep it in the car. but i have a habit of not taking care of things like i should . so i buy cheap coolers at wally world and if they are stolen or get nasty and i throw them out no big loss. i am considering getting a large 5 day nice ass cooler but ill keep it in the van to resupply the cheap coolers outside at camp.
Never had a problem in 4 yrs with anything going missing and we don't ever think to lock anything up. I;m knocking on wood right now, but until I have a problem I'm probably going to continue along this route. It seems that people who've had any problems are in the VAST minority.

I'd have to agree with frp... He was in our crew last year and we had some 30 people camping together and sharing basically everything. Not a problem to speak of.... ...but I'm knockin' on wood too

That's the best advice that there is! If you make friends with all of the people at all of the camps around you, you greatly increase the chances that someone will be looking out for you while you're away(and that's what the Roo is about, anyway). If you want to keep your perishables safe, you can buy coolers that lock (without wheels, of course) and chain them to one of your tires. You can also put your cooler in your car, lock it and partially roll the windows down. This helps with ventilation and makes it take way too long for some assbag to browse through it. You can take precautions, but it really comes-down to how bad someone wants your sh*t. You can make it VERY difficult, but not impossible.
I figure I am the only person on Inforoo to have a cooler stolen. It was last year and our cooler had wheels. I figure it was very easy to steal since all you had to do was tow it away. I would reccommend not getting a cooler with wheels. That way if someone wants to steal it, they have to pick it up. Our other cooler didn't have wheels and they left it behind. This year we'll just be storing the cooler in the trunk when we're not at camp.

I have one of those huge white marine coolers, but I don't think that is what people are talking about when they refer (ha! I said reefer! not really) to the 5-day coolers. Could someone post a link to exactly what you are talking about? This could help me as well as others.....I think.

you can get a five day cooler from a variety of brands, basically it's just a large cooler that touts it will keep your stuff iced and cold for 5 days without refilling

thanks guys (well, guy and gal). I figured it was pretty obvious: i.e. written on there some way or another, but I couldn't ever remember seeing one in a store .

the Sam's/Costco type places have great deals on the big 5-day coolers once the weather starts warming up a bit. as for thieves, the only way they could steal ours would be to dump them out first, cause they're packed so full they weigh a ton...

We have the GIANT marine Igloo and just keep it in the car. When we are at the camp you can just open the tailgate for access or take it out and use it as a table. It keeps ice for the whole 'Roo even in the car.
Big white Igloo at Costco... it holds 300 beers. No joke.
