I never slept in the tent or the car last year. I was so glad there was no rain, I just hauled a sleeping bag out onto the grass and crashed. If you dont mind waking up with a couple of ants in the bed, its a fantastic way to spend a night. I never saw a spider all weekend.
Sleeping in the car is awesome if you have a roomy car or suv. Plus you dont have to worry about putting all your stuff away and locking the tent up. I think its really low maintnance too. Pull into camp, have a snack, take a nap while everyone else is setting up tents and camp. Then after the nap head into centeroo. Get some little mini air conditions so your not choking on the heat in the morning.
i can speak to that. recently got a large van. the backseat folds into a bed. much better then having to set up camp. just park and your done. plus its way more comfortable. and with the weather we had at gory at the quarry trapping us in cars for 80 percent of the weekend it was awesome to have more then enough room to party for our 6 people and 700 glowsticks! the van became a spaceship for several hours ;D plus a nice warm bed when it finally necomes time to sleep.
i am yet to use it for hot weather festivals. it has some screened slide windows but its still gonna be hot as hell shortly after i get to it at 7 am after partying all night. i usually end up partying till sunup in centeroo and sleeping in the cinema tent anyways.

That is exatly what may occur! Except, I have a Geo Metro, (sleeps none) The back seats do fold down (extra leg room into the trunk), and possibly an extra car battery to power some air circulation device? Who knows, any which way I cut it...Bonnaroo is Bliss!
Or you could work on getting over it. Irrational fears are useless and do nothing but hold you back. Face your fear and move on.
awesome. i will call dr phil immediately for my fear of spiders.
karma to you!
but for real..if you have a true fear or something, you can't get over it. i'm sure there's ways, but i've tried to just be nonchalant when i see a spider and i always end up freaking out more. i don't scream or anything i just simply walk away. so you won't hear me scream unless it's actually crawling on me lol.
True fear can really only come from something truly dangerous./ What you have is an irrational fear. I used to hate spiders as well but I bought a tarantula for a film project a few years ago and made piece with the species. I released him into the wild. Probably eaten by an owl that night but whatever.

hahahaha. Ive actually slept in a Metro before. Not the greatest experience of my life, but definetly far from the worst. I love my car because I rarely have to transport anyone in it. Its a 2-door 97 Prelude which can fit me, a small adult and an extemely small midget/case of beer.
I was born in the back seat of a Yellow Cab in a hospital loading zone and with the meter still running. I emerged needing a shave and shouted 'Time Square, and step on it!
I wouldn't plug any device into your car. What better way to ruin a great week than having a dead battery monday morning. Get something battery operated.

If I had to plug anything in....I would try to "rig" up something with a completely different car battery.
I want to have a grand ol' time at Bonnaroo... and I definitly want a nice camp setup... So, this "car" idea hopefully is only a plan B. Like if it's too hot to sleep (from 5 to noon) or my belongings and personal items "grow legs" and walk away.
Since I had to work during all the past Bonnaroo's, this will be my first time going... So, let me get this straight... there is a tent only area, somewhat near centeroo. Then there is a parking area that also doubles as camping, a little further out?

Exactly. The vast majority of people camp next to/near their cars. Going this route is easier as far as setting-up your camp goes but, you can end-up having to walk much further(5-50 miutes) to get to Centeroo each day. There are pros and cons to both choices but, my gf and I are going "tent only" this year if we can't swing the VIP tickets (the best & most expensive route).

tent-only was definitely an awesome change after camping by my car the first year. i thought it might be rough without having the car around and i couldn't have been more wrong... you're gonna love tent city! ;D

Good Call, I have seen $hitloads of people over the years on Sunday night/Monday morning with dead Batteries. Cell phone is the only thing I plug in. Jump Box is a good thing to bring.

I could do the VIP thing, but not my first year... I need a general admissions "hazing" of sorts.
That's understandable and respectful, I guess. You really haven't done it until you've really "done-it". Next year, if you can still afford it, you'll probably want to go VIP though. GA is alot of fun and one hell of an experience but, it has a tendancy to be more uncomfortable and troublesome in the end. I wouldn't trade my first 3 Roos for anything. That's how you learn...and that is unbelievably important when attending a festival of this magniutde. If possible, i'll go VIP from here on, without a doubt. Whatever you decide, it'll be the right choice and you won't regret it at all. I guarantee you'll have the time of your life!

We ran the air in the afternoons in the car, but had the battery powered fans for at night in the tent. Of course Knoxville did try to kill me by running the car while I was in the tent (although he claims it was an accident)
"Chicago is known as the Windy City, and Montana is called the Big Sky State, so I think that we should somehow combine the two to create the ultimate kite-flying experience. "-Mitch Hedberg
We've slept in our van every year. It definitely gets too hot to sleep pretty early, but we've gotten smarter about it each year, and have been able to sleep later and later. The big things are shade and airflow... Plenty of tarps and shade tents can keep it tolerable until about 8 or even 9 if the breeze is right. I think I'm going to try and rig up a multiple layered tarp system this year to try and insulate the car from the heat a little more.
Edit: oh and we have used the a/c a couple times in the afternoon when we just needed to escape for 20 minutes.

Roo virgin here. Do many people sleep in their cars? Aside from the lack of set-up, are there any major advantages to sleeping in the car? We don't own a tent, and I'm not sure if it's better to invest in one or just sleep in the car. (Our car is a Buick Century -- not large enough to spread out like in a van, but certainly larger than a Metro.)

I suggest getting a tent b/c at night u can sleep in the tent no problem. Then in the morning when it gets hot (and wakes u up) U can move to the vehicle crank the air and get a little more sleep.
I have a smallish SUV (Ford Escape). I haven't used the tent yet--didn't get to any festivals last year. It'll be interesting to see how well it works.
I like the idea of being up off the ground to sleep.
Other people have warned me to put some kind of tarp over the whole tent/car area to try and keep out the heat.
I gotta find out more about these battery-powered fans....
Centeroo is full of poison ivy. I always get some. I've never had any problem with any insects, but I will bring some spray to spray around the tent this year.

Hmm...I didn't see any poison ivy there last year, and I definitely keep a watch out for it because I have a horrible time with it. I got it 5 times in one summer when I was in middle school. It was awful. Guess I should keep a better watch then (or is it all up close to the tree trunks?).
