I'm not a camping person. In fact I hate to camp. I like to have a shower and hairdryer and I like to be clean. I hate bugs and I am not an outdoor person. BUT you have to camp for the whole experience of Bonnaroo. He will not regret it. Just make sure to have lots of shade (that was the biggest mistake we made last year) and be prepared.

i found that the camping and waking up with your neighbors and meeting all sorts of new people outside of centeroo was a huge bonus. i didn't even care one bit about being filthy, some baby wipes in the morning and at night and i was good to go. but then again i've grown up camping, i knew what to expect.
you can make a pretty posh little setup if you put some planning into it, too. don't really have to rough it too much. i slept on a cot last year and i got some REALLY good sleep. plus with shade tents, tiki torches, enough warm blankets, tent fans, etc etc, it can be really nice and cozy!

You must camp only way to do it. So just buy your tickets on friday and once u have the tickets tell him u tried to get a room but it was all booked up(which may already be the case). Plus tell your friend that they are the designated driver all weekend b/c the last thing u want to do is go zig zaging all over interstate 24....Another option is follow this board people are always looking for others to share the RV expenses. Rv is the only way to go if u ask me. Stay on site, sleep till noon ohh yeahh good luck and if all else fails come anyway u can party with us!!
yeah if you guys dont already have a room good luck getting one. They usually buy all the close ones up to go with VIP packages. So you're probably looking at at least 45 min commute to the hotel. after a long day of partying in the sun i guarantee it wont be worth it. Id say if your not camping, I wouldnt bother going, but thats my opinion. To me 60% of the Bonnaroo experience happens away from the stages by the campsites

I have always had as much fun on the campgrounds as I have while watching the shows, it is at least half of the fun. The bugs are minimal, neighbors are 99.7 percent cool, and it's not like every amenity needed isn't less than a 15 minute walk.
Superfly pretty much books every room in the nearby towns for hotel packages. That's the only way I was able to get a room in 2004 (Tullahoma) - through a package deal. The nightly rate, which was on my final "bill", was half of what we paid Roo.
this will be my first bonnaroo and i don't think i want to experience it any other way but by camping!! camping in general is fun, i can't imagine how great its going to be to camp with thousands of crazy 'roo people!!! I can't wait...and i'm bringing a case or two of baby wipes!!!!

it's not really camping when you think about it. You are in a sea of tents in a wide open field - no woods for the vast majority of people. Last year after the headliners I went back to camp with my friend and she and I stayed up all night talking and meeting people and wandering around the quite unique environment. By choice we got less than 10 hours of sleep the whole weekend because there is so much to experience! If you dont' camp, it won't be Bonnaroo - it will be visiting a couple of bands while they play on some stage. Other people are completely right when they say that the bands at Bonnaroo aren't always the main attraction.
You should really camp for your first 'roo and then make a judgement about the possibility of doing something else for future 'roos. If he won't change his mind, then resort to violence. Aquariumdrunk had a good suggestion.

if you camp, move your stuff to the camping only section near Centeroo and you'll be right in the heart of the festival. I guarantee that you'll be in the best camping spot possible. It's the poor man's VIP ;D
Rent an RV. you have the amenity of a bed and ac, you still have the campout style. With Bonnaroo booking all the hotels within a 50-60 mile radius, jacking the rates up, and selling package deals, renting an RV is definitely a GOOD deal.
I've done both...tent camping and RV. RV is BY FAR the better way to go. I was able to party twice as hard last year because I knew I could get a solid 6 - 8 hours sleep in the AC. Party until 4, sleep till noon, get back up and do it all again.
It is pricey, but I imagine it's right inline with what a hotel is going to cost you. Get a group of people together and split it 5 or 6 ways. We had 6 people last year, and I think it was 300 and change per person for the RV and gas costs. Add in the ticket, groceries to stock the kitchen (beer and frozen pizza), and some spending cash, and the whole trip came in well under 700.
For us, we leave on Wed and come back on Monday. It's a 6 day trip that only costs a little over 100 bucks a day. You really can't find a cheaper vacation.
