I'm looking for ways to stay cool so I can sleep once the sun comes up. I CANNOT sleep in the heat so I always have to choose between sleep and late nite shows. I usually (always) choose late nite and by Sunday I am the grumpiest old fart you've ever met. It's miserable. I know you young'uns will say "Tough it out" but 45 is not 25 (as you'll learn soon enough.) I've thought of renting a generator for my small AC but the noise seems kind of rude.
So here's the deal. Karma for the best/most ingenious/most effective ways to sleep cool. How about something cold to sleep on or wrap around your head/neck? Blowing a fan across dry ice? Let's hear your ideas, fellow Rooers!

I wouldn't recommend the dry ice thing.... sleep + poison gas = not good.
Try a neck cooler - it's basically a bandana filled with crystals that hold water and keeps it cold. Here's an Ebay link to a good cheap one (might even get one myself, just in case):
I think a tent fan is the most effective single solution. It will at least keep wicking moisture off you as the tent heat builds. Second - a tarp to shade your tent.
Thanks Spook. Here's karma. I thought about these as a short term solution and they are cheap so thanks again for the link.
As for the Poison gas, i thought of that also and while I doubt the CO2 levels would get high enough to be harmful if well ventilated, sleep is not the best time to find out you're wrong.

One way I've found to keep really cool is to lay down on your back, and put an ice cube in your belly button. Then just let it melt, it doesn't seem like it would do much, but it does. If it will help you sleep or not, I don't know, but it's a nice short term solution.

Never been to roo, but I like to camp, and heres what works for me. I line up frozen water bottles behind a fan. I would put something under them to keep your tent from getting a little wet, but I find this cools down a small tent pretty effectively. I have alternately used steaks that I was thawing for the next day. A couple of cold baby wipes on your back and feet should help alot too. When I camp if I can keep those two areas of my body cold I find that I sleep just fine. Or just put the fan at your feet or your back and not in your face (fan in your face isnt the most pleasent way of sleeping IMO anyhow)
Just a small tip- if you bring a sleeping bag, a lot of times it's easier to sleep ON the sleeping bag, rather than in it, with a blanket. This way, when you half-way wake up in the middle of the night, you can just toss the blanket off. You don't have to unzip and flip your bag open (which just releases the heat that it trapped over-night).
And keep turnin' those pillows! I loooove a cold pillow
+karma ducky, I'm gonna try the frozen bottles out this year!
Use a tarp to shade your tent (use poles, don't drape it), invest in a decent battery-powered fan, and put a bucket of ice (or some frozen water bottles) between you and the fan.
The tarp over the tent will do a couple of things: - Create an insulating buffer between you and the sun. - Let you leave off the rain fly, creating more ventilation for your tent.
The fan does obvious things, but blowing it across a bucket of ice will give you a much cooler breeze than the fan alone. Try to position the fan near a screen or window in your tent, as well, to pull in slightly cooler air from outside the tent.
Also, try to sleep on something other than a blanket or a sleeping bag. A foam sleeping pad might be the best bet. This does a few things, which are sort of hard to explain, but will keep you a bit cooler in the heat of the sun.
If nothing else, find a spot under a tree somewhere and just crash there.
It's the direct sunlight that kills. If you dont have a shade and a well ventilated tent, you're going to be baking in an oven. Literally. Yes it is that hot.
last year, we fell asleep (maybe out of exhuastion first night after midnight driving for 10 hours. then we'd wake up sweating by 6:30-7am. sit outside under a tarp in teh shade and go out to some shows, we'd normally just find a tree/shade and rest/sleep/nap there until show starts enjoy some tunes and move to another stage and tree. second night probably still a bit tired and with the sun sucking out energy we just fell asleep again almost right away. We did baby wipe our face and hands and wrists and neck to help cool us down but i remember even climbing into teh sleeping bag (strange i know) but by 7 next morning up again.
i think getting up early and staying somewhat active will wear you out to get to sleep.

This is so simple, I'm surprised no body thought of it - sleep outside; find a young, nubile woman and convince her to sleep in the buff with you. Have a bunch of those natural fans like Cleopatra used to use. Charge young dudes to wave the fans on you and your lady friend. It will accomplish two things - keep you cool and put a couple bucks in your pocket. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice! How come I didn't think of this sooner?!
not to debate the merits of sleeping next to a naked chick, but the body heat will hit you like a ton of bricks. you want some distance between the two of you for sleeping purposes, trust me
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!

But if you're in the buff, you don't have any pockets.....

Or you could use "nature's pocket"... (see last post on page one) ;D

This doesn't really pertain to keeping cool while you sleep but this company has products that can keep you cool during the day and dry if it rains. Worth a look.
