This will be my first year and from what I've read, I'm a little confused about the showers situation. Portable showers have been mentioned. That sounds like a pain in the ass to travel with when I'm flying in, not driving across the country. Someone mentioned bathing by means of some sort of communal watering-hole, so to speak. Then I read something about paying for showers. Would someone clarify this whole mess?

in the campgrounds, there are $10 hot showers. some people may have solar showers set up and sell showers for $5. you can bath in a sink for free, or find the mist tent.
the communal watering hole is probably one of the many water stations set up, for hand washing, teeth brushing, feet cleaning, etc.

Yeah, when it comes to Roo...delayed gratification is the best and most practical approach. After the first day, you really won't mind being dirty (I don't and I am a clean-freak germaphobe) and then when you finally get home...That shower/bath will be one of the best f*cking things that you'll ever experience!

I've never been, but I've been thinking maybe a small bucket of water, a scrubby and babywash? Do you veterans think that sounds worthwhile? I'm really clueless, but at least it's a happy place to be. ;D

^ Whatever you think you'll need is always worthwhile. Being overly prepared is NEVER a bad thing. My gf always brings shampo, body wash and a shower poof but, she's never used them. It just doesn't seem that important once you're there. By all means, bring your "works". At least you're ready that way, right?

^ Regardless of what you decide, you'll definitely need sunscreen, deodorant, mouthwash, "wet-ones" and hand-sanitizer. Those are all "must-haves"! Near Knoxville? Where?

Hand sanitizer and baby wipes are at the head of my list, underlined and circled! Which I probably would not have thought too much of if I hadn't found you wonderful people.
I've been to 5 roos and never had a problem with washing. The water stations have faucets and troughs which make it easy to wash your entire body, just wear a bathing suit. I usually wash twice a day, once in the morning and once after the heat of the day. The cold well water feels amazing after a hot day. Bring a towel, deodorant, shampoo and soap and you'll be fine.
Cleanliness is important to me....I just wore a wrap dress at the wash stations....Washed EVERYTHING with out flashing! I did it a couple times a day....Wash cloths made it easy to lather up and a gallon jug made it easy for washing my hair(it was long last year. It reached my butt.) It was so HOT that my hair was completely dry by the time I got back to camp! sooo nice!
The water stations have wooden pallets around them to allow the water to drain and keep you out of the mud. There may be a little mud getting to the area but while there you are above the muck. Of course if you're worried about keeping your feet clean, you'll have a looooong weekend. Especially if it rains (which it usually does.)

I'm not worried about keeping my feet clean...I just didn't want to stand in everyone's sweat/stink/butt smell run-off while I'm trying to get somewhat cleaner. ;D
Have any of you ever used the pay showers? Are they open or are they closed off so we can have a little privacy? Also, do we have room to lay a towel and our stuff while we shower?
Never used the pay shower. Never seen the need. I think they are enclosed for privacy and I'd expect they have some area to keep your towel and stuff dry. But someone who has actually used them can probably answer better.

Yeah...I plan to use the showers as a last resort...probably can do a little cleaning in my tent/canopy area with minimal water and a cloth and I'll bring a ton of baby wipes for quick cleansing. I plan on being the nastiest I've ever been, but I don't care! Plus, I have that after-roo shower to look forward to!

Change clothes often & use baby wipes a couple times a day. Wash up how the pioneers would've, use a big bowl and use it like a sink. It feels fantastic after sweating all day in the sun. You can fill up a few 2-liter bottles with water from home and use that. If you leave them in the sun they will warm up.
But realistically, noone will notice. Everyone else is dirty too
dont shower! i took a shower on saturday and waited until yesterday (wednesday) to shower again... kinda gross, but i can deal- i just feel bad for the kid who sits next to me in math

I just can't see myself paying for a shower! Thinking about getting a hotel in the area monday night though, get a shower and good sleep before the long drive home
I feel sorry for the airport shuttle drivers making their way back on monday morning. You know what? I feel sorry for me too, since I'll be on there with them. That's gonna be one serious funk cloud.
Or you can get pretty clean at the water stations with a squeezy bottle and soap. Go at night, it's cold, but less crowded and very refreshing. I just wore a bathing suit. and cleaned up pretty well. Then you can go back to your tent, go to sleep and wake up sticky and sweaty :-P
