I want to get a cheap 10x10 (or larger) canopy or shade tent for this year. Our neighbors had one last year and we ended up hanging out over at their camp more than we did at our own. Does anyone have any advice on where I can get a good/cheap one? 86 DAYS!
I wouldn't go to Walmart. Theirs are cheaply made. I got the one I used for years at Krogers for $20. (look for one where the plastic goes down the legs-see pic) Try there or Target or maybe Lowes.
Tractor Supply here in TN had the $100 canopies with the criss-cross bracing on sale for $32 last week. You may also want to check there and see if they're still on sale.

it makes sense to me just to get a cheap one. stumbling drunk people happen, tent tornadoes happen, things will break. im all about comfort, but when it comes to the canopies i dont think the average person needs top of the line.
Just make sure it's a decent quality, even if you are skimping.
Last year we got one for like $15, and it was the worst decision we made in all of Roo. The legs were 3 pieces each that had fitted ends (but no way to secure them together), and the center was the same thing, just with an additional piece (4) to make it higher than the rest.
It was shotty at best. Any time the wind would blow and kinda lift the canopy sheet, legs would come apart.
We eventually just tied the ends to the X-Terra side mirrors, our neighbor's van's side mirror, and over the back-end of our tent.
*i like coconuts, you can break them open they smell like ladies lyin in the sun** *Hell I don't even know where I am** *for now I must sit here and ponder the yonder: The herbivores did well cause their food didn't never run** *We listen, if it feels good We shake** *You made a big impression for a girl of your size, Now I can't get by without you and your big brown eyes.**
There is one you can find at Target for around 40 bucks. I cannot remember the name, but it worked fine last year. i would recommend getting some extra twine and stakes for extra security. a little extra effort goes a long way.
EDIT: Set it up before you go , the cheaper ones can be rather tricky to set up.

i got a shade tent last year at walmart fairly cheap and it worked great for the 4 of us. i would recommend setting it up as soon as you get it tho cause when i did, it was messed up and had to take it back. the next one was fine tho. has 2 zippered entrances on either side so we just set our tents up but the entrances so when we woke up to the heat we were only a step away from shade

hey bro did you have the ozark trail thing from walmart for $15?
if so i need to return that nuts...
no fun last year trying to keep ya'lls canopy up...
No clue if it was OT or not, I'll ask Jordan.
That thing was such a pain in the ass. We're bringing a full-sized (heavy, collapsible) canopy this year. It's a lot bulkier, but I don't foresee us having any major problems with it.

Some duct-tape wrapped around the joints of the legs would have probably fixed your problem.
I always have a roll of duct-tape in my truck - good for a 1001 different improvised fixes!

Hey guys!
Just got a canopy from ebay. $38 for the canopy plus $17 for shipping (down with shipping fees!) I haven't put it up yet but the poles are coated steel and about 3/4" in diameter. It looks like it should be sufficient, although I've never been to the Roo before. Here's the link if anyone is interested. (I'd post a picture but I'm cyber deficient, that's why I'm marrying a software engineer

We're bring a full-fledged canopy-- my only concern is if the wind were to pick it up, we'd have at least 7 casualties at Roo this year. The bastard is pretty heavy

Last year we had a cheap one. They bought it at family dollar for 10 bucks. It did take 6 of us and 20 minutes to put it up(friday morning at 1am when we arrived at our site) I think we would have been miserable with out it. there was room enough for the 6 of us AND our neighbors! If we were not there for the wind storm it would have been flown away but, we WERE there. Duct tape is vital. Bring Duct tape(I scored big points with my neighbors:)
wal-mart sells the first-up tents, they are identical to ez-up tents and cost around $100, they are sturdy, and you wont have to worry about it blowing away
I took a cheap one the first year ($40 at Target), and It did not last past that weekend. It was extremely difficult to put up, and then after I got it back home, it never fit right again. It did the trick for one weekend, but when I was ready to go back to Bonnaroo the next year, I couldn't get it to fit over the poles. So I was forced to have to purchase a new one.
So I bought an EZ-UP for Roo2 (2003), and that same Blue EZ-UP is primed and ready to make it's 5th consecutive Trip to Bonnaroo. If only I had bought in 2002, It'd have been to all the bonnaroos!!! They are very durable and affordable for their price. I wouldn't recommend a cheap one, unless you plan on only using it once.

No matter how cheap or expensive the shade tent, invest in some good stakes. Good stakes are crucial and inexpensive. Our shade tent was $189 at Costco (pretty sweet), but the stakes were not that great. Luckily, we had extra some extra sturdy ones to use.
i've got one like the first picture in the thread, got it back in 2000 and have easily set is up over 50 times (festies, camping, parties, cook-outs, etc) and never had a problem (still use the stakes it came with and never needed the guy-lines). some people get a little overwhelmed when i dump out all the pieces, but i can set it up myself in 10 minutes no problem.
the thing i like the best about it is the more windy it is the sturdier it becomes because the canopy goes down the legs and pulls it tight in the wind, just make sure it's staked down.
^ karma for the find. ive been heavily researching canopies/shade tents lately and they have the best selection and prices ive seen so far out of any website, including ebay.

that's my first karma thingie...YEAH!!!
I've been doing the same actually as far as researching and when i ran across this I couldn't believe the great deals compared to everywhere else I have looked! I also read up on the coleman insta-clip...and the reviews say it's awesome and easy to put up...although I would really like one with sides that zip up so that I could change clothes in it.
Does anyone have and experience with the Paha Que canopies? They look pretty serious. They offer a lifetime guarantee and I've read reviews of the company shipping out a replacement pole to camping sights. Sounds like a straight-up company. Doubt if they'd ship to the Roo, though.
I like the idea that the sides will stake out for additional shade. They are kinda expensive, but that's really the only thing we don't have, and I'd like to get something before camping season starts in a couple of weeks.
