Indigo thats looks like a good idea. I'm giving up looking for a cheap canopy too and doing the multiple tarp thing.
here's our shade canopy setup: we bought a 10'x20' tarp. we went to the fabric store and bought multiple strips of random fabric, we cut each one at around 7ft . we bought enough so that the entire perimeter of the tarps would be covered. we then lined the fabric up to the ends of the tarp, and sewed the fabric directly onto the tarp. that made a killer shade canopy, and it's all done by hand so it has that special appeal.
here's a picture of it in action at down on the farm. (*note, there are even more pieces, but down on the farm was in the fall so we didn't have to use everything) -->
Tie glowsticks to them so they're visible at night.
Last year, because of an "invisible" guy line, I managed to trip and fly into a tent where people were ..."making love." Probably one of the funniest yet most embarrassing thing that happened to me last year.
hahaha, i think in some places that counts as a threesome ;D

I think I am actually skipping the whole shade tent thing, my tent is 10x8 and 6ft high, and its just me, so I'll have breathing room in there, and at camp inforoo, there will be enough shade around anyway, right? Why bring a canopy for one person? What do you think, will I be okay bumming shade?
Ok, I am at work and don't have time to read this whole thread, but I was strongly effected by this topic so I had to post....
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES buy a canopy that is just 5 metal polls and a tarp. They will try to entice you with cheap prices - I think they were $17 at Walmart. IT IS NOT WORTH IT! I really can't emphasize this enough. My first roo we bought one, and it took us NO JOKE over 2 hours to set up poorly. My friends and I were cranky, bitchy, and sweating like pigs, and it was completely half-assed even after all that time. You may think a cheap canopy like that will last you 3 days, but if someone so much as farts, it's falling down no matter how many extra stakes and ropes you connect to it. We came back after every trip to centeroo to find it crashed to the ground again. We had no shelter from the constant rain that year (luckily our neighbors were nice!)
So definitely don't bother with any one the looks like it is just a tarp and polls, it will not stay up!
Walmart sells one for like $5-10 more where the plastic comes down OVER the the four polls. I actually assembled it pre-roo all alone, it wasn't that difficult but it's easier with two people. That is a good cheap canopy, but I don't know if it would be after taking it down and reasembling it many times. I flew in, so I left it at roo since I spent less than $20 on it, lugging it back wasn't worth it.
So when you are looking just make sure it's some sort of STRUCTURE and not just a tarp, they are the DEVIL!!!

I brought this expensive "Quick Shade" tent on the right. Next to it is a smaller/cheaper/lighter model. Being metal the one I have is heavy though. I used a cart to bring it over. Use it for craft festivals during the year. Plan to bring it to Camp Inforoo again. Got it at Lowes www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=226727-82720-134914&lpage=none

Gladly, cheap canopy advice is no longer a concern. My 'Roo buddy got a 10x20 heavy duty canopy for his birthday (odd present right?) and he's bringing it with us this year. Now the only question is where the hell are we going to put it?
Hi Tara Yes, I was the guy sketching. Here is the pic that LIGuy took with me in action. ;D Looking forward to seeing everyone again and the new people.
Adjustable high quality tent poles. I think I will get these and a good tarp in order to make the previously posted arrangement, instead of the cheap wal-mart canopy poles.
or i'll see how much of a pain it is to set up such a setup and just get a damn canopy already.

They look like GREAT poles but the main problem I always find id how to secure everything. How many guy wires are needed? What if the ground is too rocky to drive poles/stakes? I use tarps with my canopy or if there are trees and such to secure to but I've never been able to get a really stable canopy with tarps and poles only. Maybe it's just me.
Besides if you can find one of these cheap canopies for $20-$30, why use tarps. I've had one for 7 years with no problems. (Remember: plastic canopy goes down the legs)
My friend just ordered this canopy 15 x 15 with shipping for $53 bucks..seems it has great reviews and it cost twice that at local stores here (ie. Target/Walmart) tinyurl.com/yq5xyb
I received this $53 Coleman 15' x 15' shade tent yesterday. I set it up in the back yard by myself without any problem. It looks like it should provide a good bit of shade. Maybe one weekend when it is hot and I have the time I can set it all back up and see how well it deflects the heat.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Ah the Kelty Sunshade! I was introduced to it at All Good a few years back and invested in one. It packs up like a tent and trully is the way to go if you can rationalize the price. It offers great shade and protects you from the rain. They come in different sizes so you can decide what fits your needs and wallet best. I'm one of those pale redheads (strawberry blonde thank you very much) that only burns and never tans. It's great for all occasions.

I got a great one for 'Roo last year at Kmart. I think it was like $20-25. It's got shock corded fiberglass poles that form a dome like a tent, so there's no center pole like the cheap ones from Wally-World, and four sturdy poles on the corners. It packs up small enough, and weighs about 10 pounds so I can check it in my luggage. EZ ups are great, but they weigh a ton. The down side is getting it set up with stakes and guy wires. Invest in better stakes and get a friend or two to help set it up. It worked great, and I'm packing it again this year.

ooo ooo I just bought one from K-mart excatly like this and I love it. I set it up in my yard last night and it was so easy. Even though I had someone else help me set up the legs...I highly recomend it =)
