ok so i was wondering how many roo'ers have gotten pulled over when they are going to bonnaroo and are in Tennessee. For some reason I always feel like the police are out to get me... because i'm weird so yea.
No, but I'm 45 and drive a pick-up truck. But really the county/stste are making tons of money thru taxes and since there has been no "trouble", they are usually okay. Of course each officer is an individual so there are a few "bad apples."

i personally have not. however, last year we had a group of 5 cars in line on the shoulder of the highway before entering the grounds, and 1 of our 5 cars got the works, 2-3 cops thoroughly searching & doing the good/bad questioning routine & dogs sniffing around the car.
what makes the story interesting is that 4 out of the 5 cars carried some contraband. guess which car they searched?

I have not, but in 2004 some of our friends got pulled over in NC. It sounds unrelated, but the cops knew what to be looking out for: car packed full of younger looking folks, coolers and tents visible in the backseat, etc. They accused them of smoking marijuana, which they had not been, said they were going to search the car (they had no illegal drugs or paraphanelia on them) etc. Our friend's didn't consent to the search, and they left without a ticket or anything. Really weird for Winston Salem, North Carolina, 6 or 7 hours away.
We were on our way last year on Wednesday about a hour out of Nashville going south. My bf was driving a little fast. You know you can only tell some one to slow down only so many times. Well, he was not listening and would you not know that all of a sudden he gets pulled over by a tenn state boy. The cop comes up to the passenger side window, where I am sitting and I open the window and he says"Give me the stuff now" He says the car reaks of smoke. We just smoked about an hour before. So I just sat there and said nothing, our friend in the back says nothing and then my bf says give it to him. I reach into the center console and hand him our bag. Well then he searches our truck and they handcuff all of us along the rode. Well, lucky I did not have any thing on my person, my bf took the hit and our friend had his stash. So they took them to the Coffee County Jail and booked them. I followed the police and took some pictures on the way to show everybody. I got to the jail at like 1 pm and went and posted bail on them 2, was like $1100.00 and lucky I had money in my account. I paid the bail bondsman, which was across the street from the jail. I then went to Sonic and had lunch, then went to Goodwill and did some junk shopping. Went back to the jail, waited and then about 3 pm, they both walked out. We went back to Sonic for them and then headed to Roo. Arrived in Manchester, Wednesday like 6 pm and went to Wallmart. Got into Roo like one of the first 200 or so cars. The cops took all of our stash. We had a sweet amount on us. We suceeded in refilling our stash that night. So the thing about this too is that we were only going 5 mph over the speed limit. Moral of the story......Watch your speed on the way there and your partying. Plus what you carry with you.
We were lucky, lots that are not as fortunate as us.
while this is technically right - keep in mind also - even if you donot consent to a search - they can and will detain you on the side of the road and call for a K-9 unit to come out - if the K-9 hits on your car - that is considered probable cause and they will then search without a warrant. (At least that is how it is in Mississippi - I spent 16 year as a criminal defense paralegal - have seen many many cases like this)

ya i thoguht that it was illegal for them to detain you without probable cause for that detainment. if they have a dog there your screwed but they cant hold you to wait for a dog if youve done nothing. ive been in a car that was sent on its way after there was no consent given to search. the cop called for the dog and we were tol to wait. my friend told him he wanted to talk to his lawyer because there was no reason for us to be detained and they sent us on our way. i know for a fact that it dosnet go down like that all the time. and they can just take forever to write some b.s. ticket. i think using a dog should be illegal. also as for the cop saying he smelled pot means nothing. a humans sense of smell is not admissable into court and it dosent constitute probable cause. reaching into your console and giving it to them does though, and it could get ya shot. cops dont like reaching for stuff. and ive had friends that have gotten by a dog search with plenty in the car. dont ever give them consent to search. there is just no reason to. and dont give yourself up. obviously they didnt go easy on ya for being honest.

the problem is there are a lot of things that can cause probable cause, they can make up some complete bullshit and if they find something in the car guess who the judge is gonna believe lol
very true. but you might as well make it as hard as possible. and maybe your lawyer can get you off that way. i know a few peopel who have had cases dismissed for cops failing to follow the laws.

im not allowed to drive on the way down. gary said that if i was driving and something happened and we didnt make it to bonnaroo, he would never forgive me.
lucky you. i hate driving. id rather be partying in the back or sleeping. but i guess someones gotta do it. and im real good about going the speed limit. so i guess it works.
i also have severe paranoia when riding with others driving. there are only a few people that i ride with where i feel i dont have to keep an eye out and scream instructions at any moment to save my life.

HAHA! me too! last year was fine but riding with a few of my buddies I always feel like we are gonna wreck any second. This one guy has freaked me out a bunch of times!
We got pulled over about 60 miles away after my friend passed a cop in the right lane who had someone pulled over on the shoulder, I guess that is illegal, he just ran the plates and stuff, and asked if we had anything in the car, he said no and we were on our way without a ticket or worse. I hate driving, I get really nervous in situations like that and appear guilty, even when I have nothing to hide.
i live two countys over, and the county police here patrol highway I-40 and highway-111 extensively during the week of 'roo

My friend and I were arrested in 2003 in Baltimore. We were driving down from NYC. We were going 7 mph over the speed limit and were pulled over just north of Baltimore. We were driving a Jeep Wrangler and my friend has dreads. When we were pulled over he foolishly cpnsented to a search. They found a pipe, a small amount of weed and 3 hits of L. They arrested us but let me go about 4 hours later. He spent the night in jail. I bailed him out to the tune of $2500 the next morning and we continued on to Bonnaroo. Oh the irony. We had a great weekend however. When he went for his court date the officer did not show up and he got a "null pros", which meant everything just went away. The next day we went on Phish tour for three weeks. It was awesome.

so according to my statistics... i have like a 12 % chance of getting pulled over... now i know that's not a fair analysis but as of now that's what the statistics are showing lol, i know the last time i went i wasn't pulled over =\ but i was just wondering if the cops had gotten smart

This is actually not true. The officer's sense of smell is certainly admissible, and well within his personal knowledge. Does it constitute probable cause in and of itself? If an emergency vehicle is stopped on the side of the road and you stay in the lane next to them, you can get a ticket.
When you were pulled over last year, the worst ticket you could have received was $50. Since then, they have increased the penalties substantially and (I imagine) are less lenient.

That sounds like the cop that gave me a ticket for speeding and try to claim he could use his eyes to tell how fast I was going.

He certainly can. A police officer is trained to know what burning marijuana smells like. It is certainly within his personal knowledge to recognize that scent, and for that scent to raise suspicions. I'm not saying that's enough to convict, but to create probable cause, it would be an element the court would consider.
The ticket for speeding is different, because you're being charged on the basis of his eyesight alone. I'm not saying that a cop can book you for smelling marijuana, but it certainly is one of the elements that a court will consider when trying to determine whether to issue a search warrant.
The police officer could also testify (in his affidavit) to bloodshot eyes, slowed response times, etc. etc.
