So when my friends and I camp out for DMB @ the gorge we always take walkie talkies. We are able to communicate without problems really but thats what 25,000 people.
Anyone play around with W/T @ Bonarroo I am guessing its just too many people using them to be effective?

(Also where the hell do I edit my profile )
Thanks! Zach
First Roo & already excited
Not sure about walkie talkies, but to edit your profile go to the top of the page underneath the orange block where it says Hey trickyzach....home, help, search, etc.... Click on profile, then click on MODIFY PROFILE. You'll see it...
we've never used walkie talkies at roo before.....my guess is that there would be thousands of other people on the same channel, so you might have a tough time with them. we found that it worked well for us to have a meeting spot. when people in our group went off on their own, we'd all meet back later at a given spot (i.e. mushroom fountain). you may also find when you get there that you don't want to hang around your group for the whole time,
I would reccomend getting a set of COBRA or Motorola radios, get a set that support both FRS and GMRS. In an open area, GMRS signals can go 10 miles or so. Technically I should mention that to use the GMRS frequencies you should get an FCC license.. go to fcc.gov and search for gmrs for more info on that.
If you get radios, make sure they support auto-squelch systems like ctcc. They call them "privacy codes" but they do NOT provide privacy. Here is an example:
Say you set your radio to GMRS channel 20.
Anyone on channel 20 can hear you, but if you set CTCC to channel.. say 4, you will only HEAR folks who are broadcasting using the CTCC 4 prefix. This allows many people to use the same channel and not hear eachothers conversations. I say again though, if someone sets their radio for 20 and does NOT use ctcc, they can hear your conversation.
I personally have a license for GMRS, its cheap, 80 bucks or so for 5 years. I have many friends who use this and never bothered to get one and who have never gotten in any trouble.. just be reasonable about what you say on the airwaves.

We used a pair of w/t while caravaning to the Roo in seperate cars, but went to cell phones once we got in.
That is what we did - we took them with us the first day in Centeroo and found that they were worthless - easier to use the cell phone and try to call or send a text
yeah. i find that text messaging is rather convenient as it is sometimes hard to hear people on the phone when near a stage. texts are nice cause you can just say where you are or where to meet and they will see it.
Texts would be ideal when up near the stages, but I still think that if you want voice, walkies are the way to go. If you get a set that do CTSS or DCC "privacy" codes, you really don't have to worry about too few channels.
My main phone is my work phone.. and there is NO way that is leaving the car.

Yeah Its a good idea to use them if you are caravaning. Eyes in the front and back! We used em in 04 and it worked ok, there are plenty of channels to spread out and you could even meet a vendor.

caravaned 2 years now and they work great, keeps u awake when sleepy and fun to goof off on. did i just hear a nine-er in there? anyway, once u start getting closer to roo -its hard b/c everyone is using walkies -
We brought Walkie Talkie's with us in '03. It was ridiculous trying to talk to anyone at all. There are so many people trying use them you could never figure out who you were talking to. After awhile it was more fun to listen all the lost people on them trying to find their camps. I would not recommend walkie talkies at the site unless you are bringing them for the entertainment value.
I hope to have some for carvaning since I know that will help us keep us all together. But for around the grounds, is there that much talking from people on other channels? couldnt we just come up with some pretty slick handle tags and try to call for each other and have someone be able to respond? Or is the problem that it is just too loud to hear the walkie talkies as is?
I can imagine that out of the.. ~90k total folks, atleast ~10k will be attempting to use walkie talkies.. that could get pretty busy
with privacy features/subchannel options, you can either choose to listen to all the hilarity and talk to folks, or use your private modes to chat with just your group..
callsigns can always be hilarious though, at a festie in march my group went as: Whiskey Tango Delta Unit 42 Alotta Fagina(a guy(with a really deep voice)) "Skoolzybombzybombz" Maverick Goose
my brother got walkietalkies a while back for christmas and we were playing with them and ended up picking up our friends who live about 5 blocks away on a channel, i guess it was the christmas for walkietalkies
but as for roo, i think it would be hilarious just to bring one and listen to all of the people, as mentioned for entertainment purposes!
