i will driving in with my truck to camp at bonnaroo this year. this will be my first bonnaroo so i don't really have any clue what to expect once i get inside. i am planning on camping/sleeping at/in my truck. i also want to bring a tarp and some poles to set up a shade structure for a small sitting area and to put over my truck to try and keep it less than blistering hot.
should i expect to have more room at the back/front of my parking/camp site or to the left/right? makes a huge difference in how i set up the tarp.
You should have plenty of room to set up a tarp and a tent. depends on how they park you if you are in front of or behind your truck, I have always been in front. There is another thread somewhere about this. Swing wide when you pull in.
Maybe I'll throw myself to the dogs, but my back's not to the wall Maybe I'll lay some bricks for the man, but the days just aren't that long So if I settle back and chill will I see far enough to feel the angel's dream? I thought it was the Story of the World!
thanks for the link. i'll do some reading real soon.
if i swing wide (and they let me), think i'll have about a 2 car wide parking area? thats pretty much all i need. ideally i'd like to have a tarp cover an area over my truck and as well as an area equal to the size of another parking spot on either the left or right side of the truck. i am bringing a tent, but i've got my truck set up pretty nice for sleeping so i don't anticipate needing the tent.
Last year when I parked I gave my space to the car next to me. I then hauled my stuff to the camping only site. You get a space around 15' by 15'. Depends on the dude who parks your car too.
I don't know if you were planning on sleeping in the back of your truck or what, but I'd have a back up plan just in case. Bonnaroo thunderstorms and winds can just pop up without notice and wreak havoc on a campsite.
yes, i'll be sleeping in the back of the truck. i have a shell on it so it's pretty secure, much more so than my tent. i don't need much room in a shaded spot, i was thinking of a small area to put one or two chairs and stretch out the legs, not much more.
btw, just got home from the dj shadow show at the fillmore tonight. great stuff, looking forward to seeing him at bonnaroo even more now.
It might get tricky to get space beside you. The parking guys are told to pack us in as tight as possible. If I were you I'd try to configure the tarp so it extends off the back of your truck.
I had a minivan last year, your set-up sounds similar to mine.
if you've got a shell on your truck that things gonna heat up mighty quick in the morning
Toss a silver suntarp over it. Make sure there's something between the truck and tarp so there's some air inbetween them and you'll be cool and comfy.
thats exactly what i'm planning to do. i've been searching for a tarp structure for the past couple days and have a couple sources. after seeing the photos posted a couple messages up, i think the best bet is to have a tarp above the bed of the of the truck and extending out beyond the back of the truck 5 or 6 feet. that will give me a small area to sit, eat, etc in some shade. i think i'll go for an orange tarp, though, instead of silver.
thanks a lot for the info, it's been very helpful!
I think everyone's camp space is in front of their car. (Is that correct?) What you can do when you arrive is back into your space so your truck bed is facing your space. Just tell the person parking you why you want your car pointing the other way.
The silver tarps are made for deflecting the heat. They really are the way to go. Here's my set-up from last year...
i may have to go with silver then. i really like orange though, maybe i can find an orange tarp that deflects heat also. thanks for posting the photo, i'm hoping to have a similar setup, only with my pickup truck underneath the tarp instead of your van.
alyroo, what size tarp is that? it looks perfectly sized for what i would like to do.
and yes, i'm really hoping to back into my spot so i'm not all alone on the other side...
If I remember correctly it's a 10 x 30 or something close to that. I remember we spent the extra $7 (or something like that) for the bigger size. It made all the difference in the world.
We got our poles from Lowe's for .10, Yes .10! They were pipes from something (?) and then we added plumbing parts to make the connectors for the tarp.
Be sure to stake that puppy down, the wind can catch it like a sail

where did you get your tarp?
$0.10! thats awesome, you must have gotten some conduit or something similar? originally i was thinking about buildling four poles that have a platform at the bottom. one pole for each wheel, with the platform under the wheel to hold everything in place (with some nerf material around those poles to keep it from banging into the truck) and a couple poles in the ground at the back for the shade area. after seeing your setup, it looks a lot simpler (and cheaper!). i'll be staking everything down with some huge nails.
here's what i've down with the back of my truck. there is storage space under the platform in addition to a dedicated area in the middle to store the tarp and poles.
^^^comfy!! I just throw a bunch of blankets and a sleeping bag on a foam pad. Oh, and I got the tarp at Wal-mart.
rasterdam, nope not VIP, I was in BFE. Originally I was on the very edge of Holly Goodhead but it was WAAAAY crowded, I just sorta popped out the side and moved over to Dr. No under the best tree EVER!! There was so much room that the horsey cops were bringing their horses there to trot around and there was almost constant frisbee going on. Plus a guy was selling ice over the fence from his property for a $1 cheaper than the "official" roo ice. Here's a better view of the space...
I swear those trees danced when i got back from Bisco latenight
