My ride fell through tonight so I'm stuck looking for flight packages from Indianapolis. I am only really worried about bringing a tent and the necessary clothing and sunscreen etc. I was wondering though how I will get all this stuff onto the plane. This is my fourth Bonnaroo so I know what to expect (one thing I'll miss is a shade tent), so will a Backpack, Gym Bag and tent be too much to bring?
Anybody with experience flying that can give me some insight?
I did it last year, and am flying again this year. It's no problem. Most Airlines let you check two bags up to fifty pounds each. I packed a tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, shade canopy, and camping chair in my luggage along with clothes and personal items. I flew in a day early and stayed at a motel near the airport so I could pick up last minute supplies like a cooler and beer. This year I'm arriving Tuesday night so I have a full day in Nashville.
my g/f and I are flying from PR and are bringing big duffle with our clothes and supplies +a big bag with all the camp gear (tent, airmat,2 pillows, bedsheets, 2chairs, table, and a canopy aka"el toldo") plus a cooler with a few cases of beer and water we guess we might exceed the wheight limit and have to pay extra for that but were hoping we dont exceed it.
i'm in a similar situation, been to the roo before but flying in for the first time, i plan on bringing a cooler and my big ass backpacking backpack. my biggest concern is my backpack, when fully backed it is almost 5 feet high, but i'm thinking it won't be that full for the 'roo, some people say if i ask nicely i may be able to bring it on the plane, others have said no way that it will need to be checked (and possibly placed in a bigger plain bag of some type so the straps and what not do not get caught). anyone have any insight?
i plan on giving the airline a call but thought i'd check here just to get more info before i do. and to make it more complicated i'm flying delta down and continental on the way back, so what goes for one airline might not go for the other.

Do you have a raincover for your pack? For one, its a good thing to have in the first place.. but for two, this will wrap around the outside of your pack and then tie on(thus preventing all of your straps from flapping about) What I am doing is getting a cheapy throwaway duffle and checking both the duffle and the pack, anything that would bring the pack over the 50lb mark will go in the duffle. When I get to Nash, I'm unloading the duffle back into the pack

Can you just check a bigass cooler as one of your pieces of luggage?
I've been wondering about this for a while & remember once reading a post about it, but I haven't found it again. Something about taping it shut? idk Has anybody checked a cooler before?

yes, you can.. check with your airline for size restrictions but it IS possible
I have flown to Nashville and Hunstville with a cooler and my big backpack. They will search the cooler and I'm pretty sure you can't have any ice in it. Don't tape it shut until after they search it. I would buy beer and water upon arrival because they are heavy. If you're taking the shuttle just take a cab to a nearby liquor store (about 5 or 10 minutes away) and stock up like that. Just another option.
I checked my lowe alpine pack once, and I just ducttaped the crap out of the straps. I made sure nothing was hanging off...taping the straps themselves, and then taping them to the actual bag. It's a pain, but it made it through. You can also probaby cover it with a heavy plastic bag. I've seen people put strollers and things in them before, so I think the airports provide them. I'd ask about that, if you don't have a raincover.

I brought my backpacking bag last year and I had to buy this bag thing that when around it to keep the straps from getting caught in anything, but by the time I got to nashville the bag was gone... My backpack was fine... I would not worry about it
