Where should I keep my cooler? Will people go in it and borrow beer, water or food out of it?? Please help. I am probably going to be car camping this year and then feeling it out if I want to tent only next year.
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!
I've only heard of it being done. Every year we leave our cooler out. It's always kinda hidden though. I usually hang a tarp from our canopy and put the cooler near the end so it's shaded and hidden away from prying eyes.
in 04, we woke up sunday only to find one of our coolers GONE. turns out, the people camped right next to us had stolen several and stashed them in their tent. when we figured it out, they weren't too cooperative, so unfortunately, we had to enlist the mounties. cooler was returned, thieves busted.... had tanks, assortment of drugs, paraphernalia (from crack pipes to needles). not cool, not in the least.
moral of the story: get to know the people around you. in some cases, it might not make a difference (it's difficult to reason with a crackhead), but you can look out for everyone else (and vice versa).
This is what I'm mostly worried about. I want to buy some small locks for our tent and keep the cooler/chairs in there, but my bf says we probably won't need them. I don't have a lot of money and what was bought is solely for US and no one else. I can't go buy everything at the store if it's stolen!

Do you think I should get a lock for the tent?
I wouldn't lock the tent. If people see a lock on a tent they will assume there is stuff inside to steal and cut the tent open anyway.
We left our coolers (with wheels), grill, chairs etc. all out in the open and no one messed with our stuff.
I've heard of it but never had a problem with theft. I've always left everything out even when I was right beside the main walkway outside centeroo. I will put some stuff in my tent or the back of my truck this year but I'm not too worried about it.
As everyone says, get to know your neighbors Thur before everything starts and everyone can keep an eye on each others stuff, just in case.
IMO, a lock would draw a thief's attention more that not. Not many people lock their tents - it really does stand out.
It's a simple cut through the tent-side and that lock is useless - and now you have a hole in the tent to boot. Kind of like locking a convertible - you end up with a cut top and no radio.
Just lock your cooler in your car if you're worried - it's what I do when I'm not in the campsite.
I doesn't happen that often, but it does happen. If you have something that you just couln't stand to lose lock it in the car or don't bring it to bonnaroo.
^^ yup - we actually had two coolers - that is why we never worried about the one we left out - the big cooler stayed in the car and we just transferred what we needed each day to the smaller cooler

That's exactly what I do - take things from the 5-day I keep in the truck and transfer them to my crappy "daily" cooler as needed.

^ Probably not.. trunks can get pretty hot
I suggest thinking about the sharks with laser beams solution
Ya know...I tried that once and the sharks blinded themselves with the lasers. I thought they learned not to shine it at each other during training, but I was wrong. Can't teach an old shark new tricks, ya know.
I'll try the trunk if I'm at my car. I'm not stashing gold in there, anyway. I guess if people have to steal, it's their karma, not mine.

My tactic:
Buy a case or two of the super cheap crappy beer (like Milwaukee Best or something), and leave in plain sight all weekend, and those nasty 'lil beer varmits won't notice your good micro-brews!
But then I'm starting to warm up to the shark & laser idea.

We always leave our coolers in our shade tent and we've never had any problems. We always use coolers without wheels and we keep them kind of hidden. Much like parking, it's really just the luck of the draw. If you get scumbag neighbors who want to steal your stuff, they will. Make friends with your neighbors and offer to look out for their stuff while they're away from camp. That's all I got.
