Last year I kept the cooler in the car with the windows down all weekend. I think I only bought 2 bags of ice. This year I bought one of those extreme coolers from coleman holds 98 beers. I'm using a 6ft bike lock from handle to handle and going over the top. also no wheels.
Out of 3 years never had any problems with our cooler. The first year we put them in and out of the trunk every time we left. This seemed like work at times. The last 2 years left in our screened room and never had a problem at all. Plus like everybody else said, know your neighbors. We shared with all so it was not a big deal with us. Acutally neighbors helped them selves to our cooler items but also returned the favors.
This will be my fifth year and never any issues... we lock our laptop, ipods, etc in the car... but everything else is out in the open and never a problem. But if you want a cooler tip from last year - freeze your bottled water! Even if you're keeping it in a warm place (car, trunk, etc) the blocks of ice will keep the price-of-ice-demon at bay. Plus, a frozen bottle of water takes about two shows to be a melted, yet still ice cold. And if you want to REALLY do it right, bring some frozen tap water from home. Beats pouring a $2 bottle of water on your bandanna with regret for the cost...
I totally second freezing your water bottles. Water has an enormous heat capacity, so those extra slugs of ice really help keep things cold. (Sorry, former chem major.)
This'll be my first 'roo, but we're planning to go tent-only, and just leave stuff in the tent. Honestly, without something like a car, there's nothing you can do to secure camping stuff, you can only make stealing it more destructive. So, we're just relying on the coolness of the other tent-only folk.
I have used a dog leash anchor before and a cable lock to secure my cooler. They might grab a couple from the cooler, but thats better than taking the whole thing.
Why thank you Oat. Also, putting a couple sunky cans of beer at the top of your cooler gives the guy who does steal a few a real bad taste in his mouth. ;D

We had an suv that we backed up to our campsite and popped the trunk where we had easy access to our coolers. The frozen bottled water helped keep everything cool for the weekend
Never had an issue with my cooler being stolen or even looked at for what I know. For ice, I usually make some bigger blocks using things like 2 liter soda bottles or gallon milk jugs. It does take up a little more space, but by monday its still pretty frozen.
As my Inebriated buddy walks out of the Porto, he yells out, "Dude...I love this place...bonnaroo thinks about everything...they even put beer holders next to the toilet!"
Had to break it to him that that was the urnal. Good times good times!

the only thing i've ever had someone steal out of my tent was a bottle of sun screen and they completely bypassed my friends 500 dollar peice of glass work. At least they only stole what they needed.

I had a cooler stolen last year. The good thing is that we had purchased 2 new coolers that were the 5 day type. The one they stole was the old one. However, it was full of food, water, etc. its sad that some people come to these things totally unprepared, then steal your stuff. One note to those who dont like having to buy ice. I always freeze about 5 cases of bottled water, which I use for my ice. As it thaws, you have cold drinking water and you never have to buy a bag of ice. I also put a few pounds of dry ince in the bottom of my cooler to keep it cold longer.

In 05 I returned to camp one night finding my neighbors had borrowed a couple chairs, which was OK. My friend & I then just spent the evening hanging out with them and I got the chairs back.
However, last year one of my better chairs did disappear permanently.
I usually keep my cooler inside the tent. Not that I think someone is going to take it, but mainly to keep it out of the sun hoping to keep the ice from melting for longer.
I had a bottle of whiskey stolen out of my cooler last year. It was inside our shade tent, but visible. I guess I'll probably put the cooler in the car before heading to shows this year...

i think it's against the rules of this website for me to specify exactly what kind of glasswork it was, surfice to say it was made by Phx, and it had a percolator.
Last year I left my trunk open with everything in it for about 8 hours while we were at Centeroo. Came back, and nothing was touched. God bless Roo folk.
I froze 5 cases of water in a big upright freezer by clearing off 2 shelves completely, taking the bottles out of the cases adn stacking them on the shelves. Believe it or not, it takes about a week for all that water to freeze solid. Well worth the trouble. There are 4 of us going together, we just carry about 5 bottles with us in our backpack, by the time you are ready for another bottle of water, it has somewhat melted and is ICE cold (and doesnt cost $3 either)

As far as theft goes...
Meet your neighbors. Smoke with them, drink with them, eat with them and/or get to know them.
Hopefully, they will look out for your stuff when you're gone.
If they are potential thieves, you will then have the opportunity/excuse to hang-out at (or casually search) their campsite when something turns up missing...or shame them out of it in the first place. Just a thought.

Like everyone said know the pople around you. Last year i left everything out, and nothing happened to it...I wouldn't be too worried as long as you know the people around you you should be fine.
Knowing the people around you only goes so far. In my experience, there are large swaths of the day when most everyone around my campsite was in Centeroo, except the nere-do-wells roaming for supplies. Lock it up in your car if you are worried.

We left our cooler out in the open the whole time last year and had no issues...but our neighbors were cool as hell. Happy to share both ways, be it beers, ice, or the sticky homegrown.
i put all my ice and drinks in the trunk and they stayed nice and cool and out of the way. i left my food but if someone wanted it then that would have been ok with me. be sure and make an extra key for anyone camping with you so that they can get into the trunk and get to the cooler if you are not there.

Got a bottle of rum (dont worry it was in a plastic bottle!) housed from me before, as well as my dad'd straw hat, and my sunglasses. Ever since, I lock anything I dont want stolen in my car, out of sight. Paranoid? maybe... Smart? methinks...
"Music has always been a matter of energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio." -Hunter S. Thompson
