I was wondering if anyone has brought walkie talkies to bonnaroo and if they were a good idea? I am bringing a par this year because I am comming with a friend who is nervious about losing me in a show of this size. Please tell me if they worked out for any of you?
From reading a previous thread about cell phone usage I've heard they aren't.
I mean you may be able to get through, but so will 40 other people. Apparently if you want your converations to remain private you have to get a special band walkie. Which I don't know how much it costs or where you can buy.
So I'm just going to end up having really weird conversations with complete strangers.

We brought walkie talkies in 2003, But after an hour of trying to test them while waiting in line and haveing very little success, we discovered their best use was saying random messages over the popular frequencies and tring to get some responses. My favorite was an imprompto poll my friend started: "If you were a taco what kind would you be?" Most said beef.

yeah, you need to get the kinds that have sub channels on them so you two can just go to one that doesn't have a lot of traffic.
as far as cell coverage goes, i have verizon and did not have one problem with incoming/outgoing calls last year....however, my friend had a different (local)provider from VA and had problems getting incoming calls, but texting worked great for her(and me as well.)
We brought some walkie talkies last year, and they did not work very well. Text messaging seemed to work throughout the weekend, though.
You should tell your friend that getting lost/separated from your friends at bonnaroo can be a great thing. I usually spend some time wandering and seeing a few shows on my own when I'm there. Just have a time and place to meet in case you do get separated.
We're bringing walkies but mostly for fun, they do work if you have subchannels even at a large spot such as this.
But yeah as others have said... plan on getting seperated and dont freak out when you do, texting is great, and having a pre-set meetup spot for after a show or knowing what show you'd like to go to next is great... but really, being solo and meeting new people is the fun part about this

Well if anyone gets this my friend and I will be on channel 19 sub 48. I would be surprised if someone found my through this but I would love to be surprised!
Others have mentioned that texting is really the way to go, especially if you're in the middle of a show or something. Makes sense to me (but yes, of course you usually have to pay per text message).
We have walkie-talkies we just bought last year to use on our long-distance move, but we're probably going to leave them at home and just text each other.

We used walkie-talkies last year and while they were pretty great when we were in the campgrounds/at Shakedown, they were completely useless in Centeroo. Too many people! We didn't have sub-channels, though.
we are brining ours but more for the fun factor then anything else - maybe I should just say Corncat really loud in the walki talkie and see how many responses I get
