I'm trying to make a Bonnaroo documentary for college, but the website says no filming. The last two years that I've been there I've seen a select amount of people with the same video camera I have. Is there some sort of media pass I should aquire before trying to bring my camera in next year?
...Also how would I go about getting this media pass.
They'll snag your vid camera if you bring it into Centeroo. You have to go through the right avenues to get your media pass. However, they are very tight on giving photo passes, and way tighter on granting video passes.
Good luck. It's always worth a try. What's the worst thing that they can say? No.
Yeah, more power to ya, man. My wife has been trying for three years straight. There is an underground-type paper here that always agrees to pay her for shots if she can get a pass, but so far it's a no-go.
Unless you work for a "Major Media Outlet"....and I mean MAJOR MARKET....or for Big Hassle or one of the other major 'Roo sponsors, you can pretty much hang up any kind of video pass. Unless you're Spielberg
Photo passes aren't much easier to come by.....you have to have a pretty well established rep as a news photog or be with a reputable national mag or paper. They absolutely won't give photo passes to webzines or bloggers.....

I walked around with mine most of the time one day and had no problems. I figure once you're past the security checkpoint into centroo, no one messes with you. I mean, people sit around on the ground smoking out of pipes. and check out the lens this girl some how brought into centroo!!!!

Yeah I've been trying for a while to get a photographer's pit pass......everyone I have talked to has blown me off and I have been told it's near impossible to get one....so more power to ya if you can get one!

Yeah a nice camera is good to have. but you are doing everyone a great favor by making the recordings you do. Since thats your area of expertise, dont stress yourself with taking pictures and hire someone to do that for you (shamless self plug here...) like me! you should check out some Ive done. But yeah a camera is a great thing to have if you decide to get one, the feeling of getting a sick picture is the best!
At my first Bonnaroo, I was worried about somebody hassling me about my DSLR in Centeroo. When I went to my first show and saw a naked guy climb the stage scaffolding at dios(malos), and not get hassled for THAT, I pretty much stopped being worried about getting in trouble for my camera.
Maybe at the security checkpoint. but once you're in, you're in/ noone messes with you in centroo.
That's not true. I had my video camera to tape the interview with Bobby, and we took it out into the Centeroo grounds afterwards. Some dude on a golf cart yelled, "put that sh!t away or we're going to take it" as he drove by. (Actually being a prick about it) We used it backstage in the media area a few times, but not in actual Centeroo.

my friends bro worked for a college paper and in 06 he got 2 tickets via media passes to go. i dont know how youd get one unless you already work for a paper or something.

If you're doing it for school, try to see if a journalism or photography professor can get one for you. MTSU usually sends one writer and one photographer to bonnaroo, but we might be on a short list since we're the closest university to Manchester.

Or you could try shifting your focus from the happenings in centeroo (which is already going to be filmed for another DVD) to what's going on in the campsites. Make your documentary about the people, how far they drove, why they came, especially since you've got a little controversy this year. It could be really interesting without ever having to sneak a camera past the arch.
