I'm thinking about making some pretty tapestries for my ez-up this year. Any tips for me? Should I just dye a king flat sheet? Or do I need a different fabric?
OK, all the guys are talking about RooTu Friday. Do y'all that make the tutus find them easy to make? I'd totally participate, this is for everyone not just the guys, yeah? Also wanted to bring to the GFT:
Daniroo is going to be freshly married and there was talk in The Hill (VIP) thread about having a wedding party type dress up night.
And OMG! I'm *sooo tempted* to scour the thrift stores for tacky bridesmaids dresses to wear for late-nite, esp. if y'all are gonna wear a veil and/or bow tie. I might even start making little carnation boutonnieres & corsages for everyone to wear at Brunch!
OH I would be SO down if y'all wanna do this, I have a few bridesmaid's dresses in my closet... one that is knee length! SCORE!

See my tye-dyed sheet in my avatar photo! I actually got mine at Goodwill. I believe it's a queen/full size flat sheet, but best of all, it's jersey knit so it it's stretchy!
JHo, because of your colorful avatar you've got one of my favorite name tags so far. I've printed out most of what I have made up, started cutting them out last night (that part is gonna suuuck!).

I also want to make a Rootu this year!! I remember reading lots about them last year but no specifics. Any GFT regulars have any idea of what page numbers to refer to on instructions? I have absolutely NO sewing skills (my middle school home ec teacher made fun of me constantly. My turtle pillow looked high and drunk), but I am willing to give it a go!!
And I am TOTALLY up for dressing up for a HoneyRooMoon wedding evening. Maybe I should stalk that thread a little more
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
bonzai, there's no sewing required for the Roo-tu. I saw Mayo make one last year... it seemed pretty simple. I will look up the page numbers for you (not much going on today).
All you need is elastic and a TON of tulle. The elastic in mine is an inch wide and it seems pretty perfect. Wrap the elastic around your waist (wherever you want it to sit) and cut it and sew the ends together. Since it's stretchy you want to make sure it's tight enough to have to stretch a teeny bit when you put it on so it will fit snugly. As for sewing it together, I just did it by hand and just went back and forth across the elastic several times because I wanted to make sure it was nice and secure. The elastic will be covered in tulle anyway so it does not matter in the slightest if it's messy.
Then you cut the tulle into strips. I actually got big spools of tulle which were INCREDIMAZING because I just had to cut it into strips of the right length, but you could easily buy yardage and cut it into strips too. Whatever you buy, look for fairly soft stuff - the bigger the holes in the netting are the stiffer it's probably going to be...and I'd imagine that really big, stiff netting would NOT be too comfy against your skin. My strips are around 6 inches wide and probably around 2.5 feet long.
Then all you have to do is knot the strips around the elastic using larks head knots. Like this:
(You just fold the strip of tulle in half and lie it across the elastic so there's a loop on one side and two long tails on the other and then pull the tails through the loop.)
And...keep tying on tulle until you have a tutu! I think mine has around 85 strips on it. Something like that. I used three colors of tulle for mine - pink, blue, and purple - so I just rotated through the colors two strips at a time. Like pink pink blue blue purple purple pink pink blue blue purple purple. If you want your colors to be sort of distinct I recommend doing something like that - if you want actually stripes you could do more than two at a time, or if you want it to be really mottled and let the colors sort of mix you could just do one at a time. Be aware that tulle is really sheer and it takes a lot to really build up colors, so if you get ten different colors it might end up looking a bit muddy when colors like red and green start "mixing."
All of that is SUPER flexible. You could cut the strips to practically any width and they'd work, but I think wider is better - you could easily go wider than my 6 inches if you wanted, but if you went too much narrower you would just end up making more work for yourself because you'd need more strips. And obviously the length of your strips just affects how long the tutu ends up - since you're doubling the strips in order to knot them on you want then a little more than twice the length you want your tutu to end up. You could also lay 2 or more strips on top of each other and knot them all on at once and see what that looked like, or try to concoct some sort of double-layered tutu if you wanted one color on top of another or whatever.
The more strips you can cram onto the elastic the fuller the tutu will be. Mine is full enough to be fairly poofy, and also full enough that at Roo I'd be totally fine with wearing it with just undies or bathing suit bottoms underneath it - but that is partially because at Roo I don't really care who sees my undies.
That's about all I can think of but let me know if you girls have any more questions. It's really, really simple and easy to do, it's just a bit time consuming.
Here's what mine looks like!
(although it's a lot more crinkly now after being stuffed in my closet, not to mention crammed unceremoniously into my duffle bag for two Bonnaroos!)
Jade I watched Mayo make one and it's really more simple than it sounds. And corncat knows that if I think I can do it, ANYONE can It's just hard to explain without seeing it. Next time I see you, I will show you what they mean.

Thanks for the Tututorial...(ha?) I was planning TUTU Friday with my roo ladies. It looks easy enough to try, but will keep looking online Themes are fun. I think we're gonna go Toga Friday and Tutus at night.
Side note: I was watching the news today and Target is getting ready to come to select cities in Canada. Usually my first thought would be anti-corporation box store type mentality....instead I thought of GFT and immediately came online.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.
Aren't the Rootu's hot? How do you keep them from being itchy? I could see it if I was wearing tights or something but the idea of tights on the farm makes me want to pass out!

We made RooTus (and DudeTus) last year! They were so fun & cute! I'll post pics when I get home to my computer. They are really easy to make. We wore ours for late night so not hot at all.
