I personally would get a canopy because it allows air to circulate between your tent and the shade...also, plastic tarps can tend to trap air in and make your shade hot...but they do still provide respite from the sun, which is the most important thing. If you can afford it, go with the canopy, otherwise you can make a pretty good homemade canopy with a tarp and some poles. I see people do it every year.
We're thinking of doing just that -- erecting a tarp (on poles) over our tent, then extending it about 10-15 feet to form a shaded area so we don't have to bring two canopies.

I'd go with both! Put your tent halfway under the canopy and then drape a tarp from the canopy to cover the rest of the tent, that way you can sit under the rest of the canopy shade and relax away from the scorching TN sun
Yeah, we experienced the death of our ez-up last year, after three Roos. We saved the canvas part so that we can use it somehow this year, probably in conjunction with another ez-up. My friend will figure out something to rig up. He was in the Navy, so he disappears for 20 minutes, comes back with everything we need, and ties about 34 crazy-complicated knots, and voila! Shade. He's good to have.

the one good thing we had last year, was sheets clipped to the canopy, so it provided complete coverage, and then when the breeze would kick in, it would blow right under the canopy

He does sound like a good guy to have around. Do you think I could borrow him this year?

Definitely do some looking around. I know that most people here would advise against buying the cheap canopies from WalMart. They don't hold up over the four days. Last year, I watched a group across from us try to put one up and it never happened. The poor guys sat in the sun the entire weekend. Luckily we were right next to the mist tent.
In general, with canopies, the more money you spend, the better off you are. It sucks, but I don't mess around with shade!

Check for sales on EZ ups when Spring starts. Last year I got two for $30 each at Tractor Supply in March. The regular cost was $99 each but they had a nice sale. EZ ups are a lot better than the cheaper ones and at that cost they were no more expensive.
I always bring about 5 tarps too to use where ever or loan to neighbors. It still amazes me how many people show up with no shade.
