I am probably going VIP this year with my wife. My friend also wants to go to Roo but would just be getting regular tickets. He would be camping in the tent only section. Where do I want to drop him off before going in through the VIP entrance?

that's probably the best idea. You could just go ahead and park your car in the lot of the hotel and have him walk on in from there. You could even keep some of his gear in your car and deliver it to him later on in the day.
Yeah, I would probably wait and deliver his gear to him later. VIP is so close to tent-only that if he doesn't have a lot of stuff, it would be pretty easy to get it to him.
