last year, thanks to inforoo, i learned about a wonderful marvel of science called "aluminet." i bought the most god-awful huge sheet of this wonderful material and my tent was cool as a cucumber. there is nothing to save you from noon-day tennessee sun but you will get at least an extra two hours of sleep every morning.
for all you noobs, go online and buy the most high-quality aluminet you can find and shade your tent with it. if you don't at least find some creative way to shade your tent, it will turn into a dutch oven and smoke your ass like pork tenderloin.

do you have any recommendations for where we can get this stuff cheap? and is it worth it to go with this over taped-together space blankets for the price? thanks for the recommendation, but i don't have much $$...trying to get the most bang for my buck!
aluminet is less dense. i've never used the space blanket thing but aluminet is beautiful. i got a 10 ft. by 20 ft sheet for like $120. it was way more than i needed and my tent was 10 - 15 degrees cooler than outside.
Yowza. I've already got the Geosport shade, thankfully. I'm sticking with that, I think. Probably will hang space/mylar blankets on the east side, provided it doesn't bounce heat directly on my neighbors. Much cheaper. Good idea, just too pricey for me. Thanks, anyway!
