I'm starting to think a tent will be so hot and so little sleeping will occur that this might be a better idea. I'm tossing around the idea of making a super tarp shelter, a tarp on the bottom, several lentgths of plastic tubing to hold up the corners and maybe even tarps on the sides for more shelter. I was also thinkin I could back my car over one end of the tarps to anchor it and just use the supports on the front.
Any ideas?
My main questions here though is, will sleeping outside in this tarp shelter, without a tent, be a bad idea?
assuming no rain, you will be fine. there are virtually no biting bugs...surprisingly.
at night, you will probably need a blanket. last year was *cold* at night and 06 had one cold night as well. i think im going to buy a camping cot to sleep on outside the tent once it gets too hot. you will be able to sleep in a tent, but only until 8 or 9 am. once that sun comes up - forget it. not sure how it would work if it was cloudy...

It's cold as hell at night! Not only should you be in a tent, but you should be covered up with a blanket. Don't let the sweltering days mislead you. My buddy didn't bring a blanket and he got the flu.
I always sleep outside on a cot or in my hammock. Never even set up my tent. It can get chilly but '02-'03 it was hot and humid all night. If it's really humid in the day the temps will not drop as much. With the drought the last few years, the temp has dropped pretty good so you might want a blanket.
Sleep under the canopy as it has rained at night, usually when it's humid ('02-'03) so you want cover from any rain and the dew, which can wet you if you're uncovered.

I've never thought it gets all that cold at night. Of course, you should bring a blanket because it'll be a little chilly compared to the 95 degree days. Now, when I went to Echo Project in Atlanta back in Oct. that was freakin' cold at night...like low 40's cold. It's nothing like that at Roo.

hahaha i agree...i didn't even notice the cold...as soon as i got to my tent and laid down, i was out...

Lol, I remember it. I was curled up in the fetal position all night.
^^^I know it was freezing the first nigt in 06 - but by that I mean Wednesday night - I only know that because once we got to BFE and set up the tents - we stayed up the rest of the night giggling and laughing - it was really cold around 4-5 a.m.
You can do that setup with a tarp, just make sure it can withstand high winds. We usually run a couple tarps off off the canopy pull em out and stake em down and get extra covered room and shade. We perfected this in 04 cause the rain was blowin in from the side and gettin our shlt wet. A cot would be a good thing to bring to sleep on, but remember it does get cold. You aint got to worry about mosquitos, but there are a few bugs.
thanks for the all the advice guys. I was thinking of different ways to rig this up but I'll probably bring tent anyway. I know I wouldn't mind but the guys I'm brining aren't exactly equipped for non-luxury. I want to either tie the tarp to the oh-shit bars inside the back doors of my car and pull the tarp over the car aand it should add some height, or I'm going to somehow secure the tarp the front of the tent and tie it to some stakes. Somehow I will make shelter, I won't be sitting in the sun all day.

sorry, that might be a stupidass question, but i'm a first-timer. i'm from tennessee and sleep in a tent all summer for my job as a white-water rafting guide, but it gets way too darn hot come sunrise. i'll be sleeping in a hammock on the river this summer, but there's trees out there.

They make portable hammocks and camping hammocks. They just have their own stand. Forget what thread 'round here had pictures.
hey.... so heres my two cents, last year the boys beside us put all their stuff in their tents and slept in cots under their canopy..which is a good idea i thought considering i was sweltering in my tent my 7:30 while they were sleeping softly like bonnababies... this year were going to have a huge canopy so we can bring our sleeping bags out there in the morning when its too hot to sleep in the tent... the trick to staying up late for all the fun is being able to sleep until like 10am, and if you throw in any party favours on top of that of course lol!!!

I've never slept outside at all, but I'm not sure I'd want to at Roo (might under a canopy though). I also had a close call last year. Woke up at like 7 AM (call of nature), and on my way out, still not 100% awake, I almost tripped over a girl who was sleeping. It looked like she may have been topless under her covers; I can't imagine how embarrassed I'd be!
Our neighbor slept outside in his hammock Thurs night last year. Not only did he wake up covered in dew, but he also awoke in the middle of the night to someone playing with his feet. Seriously.
I was in the cinema tent one night and a bunch of people were sleeping on the couches. The folks in charge went around and woke them all up every so often. Seems like a great place to nap in the afternoon, but not to sleep all night.
I dont know, I slept on a couch all night two nights and the other night i slept on the grass in there, I guess it helped that a few of us shared our unmentionables with the guys working. Its the best place to be when the sun starts coming up tho

i hate people touching my feet...that would seriously freak me out if i woke up at roo to see someone standing infront of my feet touching them...*shudders*
