What are some good alternatives for ice? I hate having to stand in those long lines for ice. Do you find the 5 day coolers to be helpful or do you have to replace the ice just as often?
well we have a dry ice thread, you can also do frozen water bottles if you like. Past that there is not a lot of variety unless you bring a generator and deep freeze.
I think the best way would be freeze large jugs of water and all of your bottled water and then use two coolers. One cooler for keeping ice and stuff like that. The first one will stay closed most and stay out of the sun, and another one for everything else. I am not bringing any ice in bags. When it melts its just a huge mess with food and stuff in the cooler.
Here at home I freeze milk jugs and they will stay cold my cooler about 3-4 days

I actually went camping this weekend to try and get back in the groove of things. I went to Wally World on friday and bought one of those cheap little styrafoam coolers. We were able to fit our Morgan, sodas, and sandwiches in it with ice. Needless to say it is Monday and there is still ice in it after beeing in the sun in the hottest part of the country(S.Fl)all weekend. I have owned a regular coleman plastic cooler for a few years and it will not keep a case of water cool for even 8hrs. So I'm thinking maybe 2-3 styrafoam coolers ($15) might work just great at Roo this year.

5 day coolers are an absolute must. They do sell ice in 2 different size bags at Bonnaroo, I just bought the large bags, they were a bitch to carry far though. Look around the campgrounds, you never kno whats out there. I found a place that was giving away free snacks and coffee in the morning. Donuts fruit and coffee for free, thanks helpful friendly people.

Got that from my dad many years ago.
as posted above
Save up gallon milk jugs, clean them well, fill, and freeze. that much solid ice in a good cooler may last a 4 days. A good tip is to squeeze the jug a little after you fill it to allow for expansion.
Yes water is most dense just before is freezes and then expands some. thats why there is always "clouds" in ice you make at home.
We'll probably fill a 5 day cooler full of them, and use them as we need. A hammer is useful for busting it up for drinks etc.

how long will the water bottles in a cooler stay frozen? (i think its one of the 5 day? ) big grey with white cover and i think its a coleman. anyway will they survive the ride down from the northeast or will i arrive with a cooler full of regular water bottles?

HA! I remember in '06, the line was ridiculously long at one of the ice stations. Some enterprising scamps at the front decided the undercut the ice line and buy what literally was a handcart full of ice and walk towards the back of the line shouting, "Ice! $10 a bag!"
I saw at least 6-7 people buy them out of about 15-20 bags of ice in less than 5 minutes.
I laughed, bought my ice the normal, non-price gouging way and a good time was had by all.
**As for being back on topic; dry ice and a good cooler IS the way to go! Check welding supply shops, a local one sold me way more than I could carry for $5.
Meijer here in Fort Wayne has dry ice, it's in a special freezer at the front of the store. As well as the towels to cover it and handle it, make sure you have adequate ventilation - it's pure CO2. Harmless in itself, but not in a confined space where it can lower the oxygen level.

Damn, I miss Meijer's, we don't have them down here in Florida...do they still have the HUGE aisle with bulk items in big barrels? I used to love that! I also miss that dept. store Hills....they used to have these Christmas commercials with this dwarf dressed like an elf, so awesome!!!!!!!
For anyone with a Costco membership: I got a 70QT 5-day cube Igloo cooler for $43 today at the West Nashville location (new shopping center off Charlotte Pike).
