Saw Mofro for the second time last night in Asheville. Some equipment problems early on did not stop JJ and Co. from dropping a huge show on us. Stella Blue is a great venue. My first Mofro was post-show Phish in Miami and I loved that one too.
The weirdest thing about Mofro is Daryl, who sits in a cut-down secretary chair playing very spare slide guitar and occasionally some rhythm, the latter mostly percussion-style stuff with his wah-wah. He never really plays a lead; you can often barely tell he's there. Yet his contribution to the whole is notable and distinctive, especially with his distant slide work. Last night JJ (lead singer/guitars/Wurlitzer keys) said he'd been playing with Daryll (not sure if one or two ll's) for 15 years; "something no man should have to say."
Highly recommended if you haven't seen them yet. More so if you have.
I caught a few songs of Mofro's set at Bonnaroo '02 and was mildy impressed. About a year later, I saw them open for North Mississippi All-Stars and was really blown away by their set. I had seen several NMA shows at this point and was huge fan of theirs, but on this particular night Mofro actually stole the show for me. I'm not quite sure why I didn't really catch on at Bonanroo '02. Maybe I just saw the wrong couple of songs, maybe their set was sub-par, maybe it was the fact that the crowd was relatively sparse, but I have definitely been converted since. I was really excited to see them added and will definitely make an effort to catch their set this year.
